What is a Paintbrush Technique?
The paintbrush Technique is a Colour Packing Technique used in tattooing that's introduced by Sunny Bhanushali, the founder of Aliens Tattoo School. Colour Packing is the process of inserting the pigment into the skin with no negative space showing. While using colours in a tattoo, blending the two pigments is really important. Use this technique for smooth blending and colour packing.
In this video, you will learn Colour Packing techniques from the tattoo expert himself.

For color saturation I've always heard a machine "with more give" is what your going to want to use. When it has give it has more of a hangtime in the skin creating a larger dot per penetration, allowing it to build up faster and more solid so you can get out of the skin quicker. Usually paired with a standard .35 needle configuration typically On a shovel head mag. On the other hand if you were going to do a black and grey piece it helps to have a more direct drive machine that creates a finer dot with alot less hangtime in the skin so you can use your hand speed and weight to control a slow build of shading to the tattoo. Usually paired with shovel head bugpins. 🤷‍♂️ 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ But whatever your doing seems to work because your work is killer. Much love and support for you bro.🤙 The paintbrush cross hatching approach seems like something I need to look into more. I've tried similar techniques just without the cross hatching part.

Dude the pressure's a lil much here, it's sure to penetrate the dermis, so please be careful if you use it on a real human skin, slanting on mags is like using a 1-5 liner or shaders, so hit the skin as you would a 1 liner, just a suggestion and keep the tats rockin

Hello. Very interesting tenhnique. But i have a question about can you use this on realism Tattoos as well? i feel like you get a good solid packing but not smoothness you need in realism.. What is your experience with this? Alsoooooo.........on blending the colors you said to keep the needle a bit more inside the cartige. But WARNING ... Touching the skin with the plastic tube while dragging, will damage the skin pretty bad. And its getting pretty close from the skin. Right or wrong ? Cheerss

@ Sunny Bhanu How come when I am packing black with 15 magnum on fake skin I cannot get it to be a dark black in 3 passes? Even when I do super slow tight circles it is nowhere near dark black? I might have to go over 8 times to get it almost black. Very strange I tried changing many variables in technique and still cannot get a solid black. Any idea? I am using 1mm yuelong practice skin.

@thoraht
@thoraht 3 жыл бұрын
i tattoo 18 years as my main job and first of all i have to say the sol nova is a medium stroke machine and not a long stroke, your technique works on this this plastic skin but not on human skin, theres no saturation, im a realistic color tattoo artist, you can check my work on facebook (eden tattoos stp) never use pure color for blending, always thin it up with water on the needle, this increese the flow and thin up the pigment, its everything similar to photoshop or airbrush, color flow and opacity. if you pull a flat line with a magnum you dont get saturation but thin lines what heal out bright, best looking solution is to thin up the color and tattoo in circles then saturate the startposition what ia not aupposed to blend with the next color. the strokelenght with rotary machines is a bussines myth, sol nova is a direct drive brushless machine with 2,4mm stroke, this mechanic makes physical no difference to a shorter or longer stroke because it just push the needle in and out without mechanics (feather) in between, so i you have a shorter stroke like on cheyenne spirit with 2,4mm direct drive you get a faster moving needle at the same voltage, thats all what makes the difference, so if you use a long stroke machine just increese the voltage. the give system on rotary machines cant be compared to a coil machine. a coil machine pushes in the needle and rest inside the skin untill the feather rebounce, that increese the color flow with the time the needle stays inside the skin. the give on a rotary just destroys the skin because the the gets not enaugh energy to stab inside the skin and vibrates on the surface. what u realy feel on a rotary what makes the difference is the building accuracy of the mechanic plus the efficency of the motor depending on the strengh of the magnets, diameter and KV (cycles per volt) the longer the stroke the higher the susceptibility that the needle acts inaccurate, same rule for to much mechanics in between ( slider machines) i build rotarys my own and drones, thats why i have good knowledge about electronics, mechatronic and especially physics of motors

Thanks for the comment, you have great amount of knowledge bro, I respect that, I agree to almost everything except that it doesn’t work on real skin, I use, I know many other colour artists use it. It’s a new technique, new for me too, definitely the pigment needs be be diluted while working on real skin, no doubt about that, this is a clip of the webinar I did on Colour surrealism, I did use this technique through the entire session along with few other techniques.
@thoraht
@thoraht 3 жыл бұрын
Sunny Bhanushali i will try it on monday and make some photos, of course the color reacts different on point of saturtion by playing between flow, angle and depth, makes also. hugh difference if you tighten the magnum needle by pulling it out of the crtridge, bend it and press the 2 rows together, i never use the needles out of the box and it mostly 0,25mm softedge for realistic, i guess cheyenne doesnt support this needle sice but im not sure, early days i was used to the 0,25mm bugpin needles from magic moon, they are awesome, long time there was no option for cartridges. 0,25mm bugpin ( bp is xtra long taper) reduce the skin damage by a lot and give you the chance to penetrate the same area more often for texture and detail, also works much better for hair and fur texture. if i would use whipping techniques i would probably choose a 0,3 or 0,35mm needle but it dont like pixels in my work. the point is the 0,25 bugpin softedge doesnt make so much lining fx when you pull it without making circular movement, so im pretty sure it would even work better for the blending with this technique
@SunnyBhanushali
@SunnyBhanushali 3 жыл бұрын
@@thoraht Would love to hear your expert comments after your try it out :), I prefer .30mm and .35mm and avoid .25mm or bug pins (though I used them for few years before I stopped using them). I use Cheyenne cartridges straight from the pack, I used to do lot of needle-mods before I started using Cheyenne equipment, I never felt the need of that after Cheyenne.

Whats your opinion on voltage? I used to always use 10volts as this always made sure the ink packed in well in the skin but iv seen a few artists on youtube who use 5volts “pretty skilful artists” Also i tried blending different shades of opaque grey on some fake skin and it seems impossible, all shades are coming out the same “quite dark” iv never really used fake skin, found it easier on human skin. Iv seen some stunning opaque grey portraits/skulls and would love to see one of these in action and a tutorial, everything is always black and grey wash on youtube…

Hello Jimmy, glad to hear from you :) I always worked around 9V to 11V, however from last 3 years I am learning to do tattoos on low power, around 6V and the results are better than before. It’s difficult to shift from high voltage style to low voltage as it takes different set of skills to work with it. And the shift is not quick, it takes time to learn how it works. Working on artificial skin is for newbies and for the artists who wants to test something new, if you are better off on skin then there is no need to try on artificial skin.
