i would recommend anyone who prints out their photos to calibrate their devices if they want any chance of the print bearing any similarity to what they saw on the screen. Monitor and printer calibration tools are not particularly expensive. As for movies, a calibrated screen will at least provide the viewer the opportunity to 'see it' in the way it was exported in the beginning.

If you own the printer and the screen, that's a great idea :)

Thank you Olivio for this no-nonsense discussion of color handling. I learned a good deal and had some of my confusions cleared up!

Thanks for this video. You started the right place explaining where the different color profiles lives. This can create so much frustration. You manged to explain a lot with simplicity. Please continue explaining color ... maybe especially color printing and profiles. There is a lot of professional explanations out there but for most of us it's too much for our needs.

Thank you very much for this tutorial. Following your instructions I have configured the same color profile in Photo, Designer and Publisher. Now I have it all the same as in the Adobe suite. Perfect!

The problem with colour calibration is it assumes that the only monitor with the error is yours. Not that the outliers are the ones that are calibrated.

I have been trying for ages to get (and understand) uniform colour grading between my computer and my prints in the shop. This tutorial helps a lot in explaining this.

Yup , color work flow = xrite Color Checker Passport - camera calibration, xrite i1Diplay pro = monitor calibration, ICC Profiles = Paper/printer color out put. Before getting into printing I watched quite a few vids on you tube from xrite & a you tuber who has a printing channel who also uses 3rd party inks. Anyway all at once (about 9 months after by my camera equipment) I purchased the Xrite ColorChecker Passport, Xrite i1 Display Pro screen calibrator &, the Cannon pro 100 printer. I have a Nvidea GTX gpu & a cheap 21:9 wide Lg monitor. (Eventually I'll get a benQ monitor) The monitor has different modes & I picked one of the custom modes for my photography. First thing I did after watching his set up video on the printer & xrite's on the monitor calibrator was calibrate the monitor & use the standard test print he provided a link for(the one with the strawberries , etc.) with the printer driver as suggested. Then started printing from LR6. I print from AP once in a while & also own Qimage Ultimate which I hardly use either. = LR6 is so easy but Qimage is suppose to be better for pros & custom layouts. Anyway I think printing at home really adds to the joy of photography & can affect how you plan when taking a photo for print. The disrtibutor for xrite sent me an email offer for the i1Studio Monitor/printer/paper profile/ calibrator at 40% off. I have just started playing with sample packs from RR & Canson using their ICC profiles for the paper/printer & once I decide on a couple of papers, I'll make my own profiles. Do I need to, probably not. Their profiles seem to do a good enough a job at it. PS. You didn't mention soft proofing, did you PS. I know, a little long winded but I can't help it. I love this stuff!

This video helped solve a problem, my HW (Dell laptop) profile was not ICE61966-2.1. Once I changed that, now my exported JPEG images look like how I see it within Affinity. THANK YOU!!!

Please don't take this the wrong way I am trying to offer constructive feedback but I think you are doing your viewers a disservice with this video. Your comments are valid for people who have no real interest in photography, as long as they have an image of some kind they are happy. Anyone spending the time and effort to find and view your channel is probably looking for more. At the very least unless you have a calibrated monitor you do not have any right to judge any photo you see. The digital world operates to certain standards such as sRGB. This (very basically) specifies that for example this shade of red, green blue etc is defined as a certain %of red, blue and green. So if your monitor is not calibrated you can have the situation where you adjust the colour of a red post box (I'm in the UK) to look like the correct red when in fact the % of red, green and blue pixels your monitor is using will display as orange on a calibrated monitor or if printed. Printers expect the photo to be in the stated colour space. So if you look at someone else's photo of a red post box you think what!! Post boxes are red why is this guy making them orange. Unless you are going to follow the basic standard why are you bothering with videos like yours? Calibration also helps with the "my prints are too dark". The basic transmission vs reflective difference with screen vs print means you need to use a relatively dim screen to have a good chance of getting screen to match print. A hardware calibration will also help you set this. Cheap monitors benefit more from calibration than expensive ones simply because expensive monitors will come calibrated from the factory whereas cheap monitors will be no where near calibrated. Think about it? You can get a hardware calibrator for not that much more than the colour card you showed. www.amazon.co.uk/X-Rite-ColorChecker-Passport-Photo-2/dp/B07PNCPZ8G www.amazon.co.uk/Datacolor-SpyderX-Pro-Calibration-photographers/dp/B07M6KPJ9K If you asked Datacolor for an evaluation unit for your channel you have a good chance of receiving one:-) One unit can be shared with friends to reduce cost? Personally, I think a detailed video showing how to use a calibrator would be of great benefit to your viewers. I purchased one years ago and regard it as one of my best investments. X-Rite are considered superior products but Datacolor products are more user friendly which is why I suggest you evaluate those. Please keep up the good work, even if you don't agree with my thoughts :-)

Totally agree, nearly all laptops have a blue cast….mine is a decent gamut, wide view angle, matt screen….. Blue cast until calibrated, if I don’t calibrate, I would obviously overcompensate and make my images warmer than they should be. This significantly affects editing, viewing, and printing. Like you say, misleading information, those looking at this channel will be photographers and deserve better.

Thank You so much. I found this video very useful and very helpful. I'm not much of an Adobe PS user. Do you or would you happen to have any information incite or some kind of work-flow, using X-Rite Color checker Calibration with Affinity Photo? And again, Thank you for your tutorials!

If in doubt i would send a email to the printing service or company that made your printer and ask them. often home printers are ready to print rgb files, but yours might not. So, always ask the source :)

Hello, thank you for this video. I did all the same settings, but when I sent it by mail to my phone and want to place it at Instagram, it’s always different from the colors at my laptop. I’m getting crazy about it and don’t know how to fix this. Is it because it’s apple and it has another color profile? Kind regards, Trees

The profiles are simply stored in a folder - not "installed on my system", just stored on it. Inside Affinity I haven't been able to get the program to recognise the profiles. I use Affinity with all my photos, now - the "unsharpen" sharpener, the "clarity" app, the denoise and haze apps, and ESPECIALLY the panorama app, all widdle all over Adobe.

Hi Jean, if you paid a lot of money for these profiles, shouldn't they either be installed for you or at least give you a guide on how to install them and use them? Have a look at this guide for Windows 10 www.windowscentral.com/how-configure-correct-color-profile-your-monitor-windows-10 Here is also the guide on how to use them in Affinity Photo: affinity.help/photo/en-US.lproj/index.html?page=pages/Clr/ClrProfiles.html?title=Color%20management Hope that helps. I would also suggest you contact the company where you bought the color profiles to help you get them set up. That should really be part of their customer service - i would hope so! :)

Olivio, I spent several hundred dollars to arrange for colour profiles specific to the papers I use. How can I select those profiles, in Affinity?
@OlivioSarikas

Hi Jean, after you have installed them on your system they should be ready to select at the locations i show in the video. Plus there is a extra Spot where you can select a profiles in the color management section of the print dialog in Affinity Photo. :)
