Colorado's Ranching for Wildlife (RFW) hunting program

Colorado's Ranching for Wildlife (RFW) hunting program provides Colorado residents a unique opportunity to hunt on private ranch land normally closed to the public. Participating ranches provide public hunting recreation access to their land free of charge to those who draw licenses.
Public licenses on each ranch are available through the Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s (CPW) draw process. The number of licenses on each ranch is determined by negotiations between the landowner and CPW.
Through this program, hunters can play an important role in helping CPW and landowners manage wildlife populations on private land. In addition to providing public hunting access to successful applicants, participating landowners are required to improve habitat on their ranch for both game and non-game animals. These efforts help preserve and enhance open spaces for wildlife to live and thrive and keep the hunting heritage alive for you and future generations.

I have had a decent RFW experience for me on a doe antelope hunt. Good amount of opportunity and helpful contact. For my daughter though HER first big game hunt in CO was pretty demoralizing. She had a cow tag and we saw tons of deer and antelope over the hunt......and a 500+ head herd of elk. Problem was that it was on portion of the ranch they marked as "off limits" . Not around buildings or live stock, ag fields with easy access. When I was on the other hunt in the same area a few years earlier (on another ranch) I had seen the same exact thing. Try explaining to a 12 yo how the animals WERE on the ranch, within easy reach with cover but that the ranch chooses to hoard those elk while getting the benefits of the RFW program. If I here one more rancher cry about "too many elk" on their ranch while being able to do crap like that I will vomit. The amount of money big ranches make from outfitting (especially those with RFW tags that get to choose their seasons) is infuriating when they cry like that...... especially those getting to graze cattle on public land at ridiculously low $$$ per head. There are some really good ranchers......there are also a lot of entitled greedy one's that think this public resources is theirs. End of rant.....

I have been putting in for this program with my dad for 7 years, what a joke........ Ironically, the same ranches will happily bring a hunter on through their guide services for 10k. There dosent seem to be a shortage of tags for them! I have used your hunt "planner" and followed their recommendations exactly. Oh by the way I would be happy with a cow tag, yeah not so much.........

Try using the "Drawn Out At" reports to best identify the hunt codes that align with the number of preference points that you have. Several of the 2022 cow elk RFW tags were successfully drawn with 0-3 preference points. cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Hunting/BigGame/Statistics/Elk/2022ElkDrawnOut.pdf

@Colorado Parks and Wildlife Yet for 7 years, we have listed cow elk as a second choice and not drawn. Something doesn't add up! I appreciate your response. Every time we have called and inquired with your hunt planners (past 4 years) and ran through everything, we are given suggestions. We follow them, nothing changes, same results. For a program that is geared towards residents it sure doesn't have many opportunities.
