There are more than forty different colored clay pots and pieces in this pottery video. Over the last year I've learned a lot of techniques for working with colored clay and the clips I'm showing you here are my favorites. There are some brand new cuts and colors mixed in for all of you loyal fans as well as shortened versions of past videos for the first time visitors. WELCOME :)
Use the hashtag #ColoredClayWithJim to post your own colored clay work so we can all connect and share. Maybe I can feature some of you in a future video. I'm just trying SOMETHING FUN here.
I'm using colored porcelain that I made by mixing in mason stains in different amounts. I fire to cone six in an electric kiln and normally leave the outside unglazed to show the raw clay colors. Four processes of using colorants in clays to make designs are: Agateware, Neriage, Nerikomi, and Marbling. Nerikomi is generally hand building with slabs cut from intricate, colored blocks like the ones you see me cut from in the video. Nerikomi pottery is very time consuming but I love the results. Agateware (English)/Neriage (Japanese) are similar in that you use a pottery wheel to throw a piece with a combination of colors. The wheel spins the colors in the direction wheel's rotation. Sometimes wheel thrown pieces are left as is or they can be carved into to exposed the colored layers of clay. Marbling is just a general term used to describe Agateware/Neriage. Marbled clay gets it's name because it looks like marble. It's easy for people to understand but if you want to be true to the art form, it's agateware/neriage for wheel throwing colored clay.
Thanks for watching. Let me which one of these clips blew your mind!

Amazing,it is mind blowing the different patterns and how they work out. I've been watching a potter in Kauai and he does amazing patterns with the coloured clay. Going to try and see if I can get my head wrapped around how it works out in the end

When mixing the clay what is your opinion on the best way to avoid bubbles w/out messing up your clay design?

Love this! I have been working with colored clay lately and am hooked! I make my own, would love to know where you buy yours pre made and also PLEASE tell me if a zinc free clear glaze is necessary? I found some dark brown spots on some of my glazes pieces and am wondering if the clay turned brown due to the clear I’ve been using! Would love to hear your thoughts on that. Great work!

Hi Jim - I've never worked with colored clay but find it extremely attractive and have added it to my list of things to do with clay! All of your various techniques are appealing, I'd say nerikomi is my favorite - love seeing the repeated patterns, think it would be challenging yet really satisfying to get it right. I'm especially fond of (all shades of) the color purple, and would love to know the best mason stain(s) to use to achieve a gradation of lavender, grape, plum, violet, etc. Thanks for your expertise and inspiration!

Nerikomi is my favorite too. Although it’s the most frustrating sometimes. You should definitely give it a try. I’ve been working on colored blends lately so I’ll let you know what I discover. Thanks!

Do you sand these cups after they are fired? Is there a clear glaze on them or is that just the clay? They are so pretty, and you are a great teacher. Thank you!

I do the most sanding before the bisque with a green scotchbrite sponge. Then I do a little sanding after each firing if needed. I always hit the final piece 600 after the final firing. Cleans it up. Most of those pieces are raw clay outside. Thanks for the kind words :)

Very enjoyable, some great combinations, styles. Keep them coming. Do you have DVD’s for sale Showing your process as I’ve entered my 87th decade I would like to slow down the speed etc. I work with porcelain and or B-mix, and mix the same body with stains etc. Hand build, press molds etc. Really enjoying your site. Thank you so much. I don’t have a DVD. Everything is on KZfaq for free :) KZfaq does have a feature if you click the gear near the bottom right to change the video speed. That would allow you to slow things down. I like B-mix. Haven’t used it a lot though. Thank you for the kind words, Diane.

Got it. I see how that’s different. Most of these clips have longer versions with step by step tutorials if you are interested. They’ve all be posted here or on my Instagram in the last year. Maybe I’ll give it a shot explaining my process the next time around. Thanks for the feedback 👍🏻
