The folks in the LSP Research Facility are back at it this week experimenting with various agateware ideas. All pieces were BISQUED to Cone 04 and FIRED to Cone 5. Good times!
If you would enjoy a deeper learning of Ann's painting, decorating, and glazing process then check out Ann's Video Workshop Series. These workshops are very detailed (typically 1.5 - 2 hours in length) where Ann provides step by step instruction and are designed to help potters take their work to new levels of craftsmanship and artistry. vimeo.com/showcase/6725318

Darwin's Choice definitely my favorite. I think the final product has a lot to do with how much time the piece spins on the wheel while you throw it. The longer it takes, the closer the colors get and you have a more "striped" piece. Thanks for posting a great and informative video.

Im sure you are right. There are a lot of factors that influence the final result, right. Thanks for watching!!!

I LOVE how you show such detailed, instructional videos and also when you show the finished product! So many videos online are good but they don't show the end product and it's terribly disappointing! Thank you tons!

Really cool experiments. I'm partial to the last one. Loving your videos. Stumbled upon your channel today. So entertaining and educational at the same time. 3 year novice potter here, and I love finding new channels and artists to follow since I'm mostly a self-directed potter. Really appreciate artists who share their knowledge with everyone.

#2 Slice & Stack: looks like a cow's pettern without being too obvious and literal. #6 Once again Darwin was right! Looks more marbled that the others to me. This was súper fun, I'd love to see one for creating marble effect in hand building.

The colored clay carousel can be done as a laminate swirl -- cut a channel to push the colored clay "worms" into, which makes them an integrated part of the clay mound when you are throwing. The swirl becomes imbedded into the agateware and less susceptible to being trimmed away.

When stacking, it also makes a difference on how the layers are oriented when you put the ball of clay on the wheelhead....horizontal (like you did) vertical, or my favorite - 45 deg.

Awesome! Darwin's choice is my favourite 😂 followed by carousel 🎠 wondering why you didn't cone up and down 🤔 is it because the colors would get disintegrated by doing so?
@annruel1982

hi Nikki. If the clay is soft enough to center, I usually dont cone up and down. I just push down and in on it to center. It may have made a difference in the outcome....that could be a whole other video, haha.

This can also be done by simply pounding the clay together properly!

Ann--- I use mason stains (MS) for flowers and leaves. I fight with all the greens. Often my beautiful mint green becomes ugly brown once clear glaze is applied. I've tried Amaco clear, zinc free and finally matte clear to maintain the green color. No luck. I mix my MS with b-mix to the desired color value and fire at cone 5. I've checked all of kilns and they're fine. Any guesses or suggestions?

Have you coloured the clays yourself, or are they mixed clays? I assume they must all have the same firing range, if so? The pots are delightful.
