It’s amazing what people hear or don’t hear. So the woman with the lightest complexion said she experiences colorism or at least receives remarks about her complexion from Latinos/Hispanics. The young woman in the middle ignores what she said to say the only way black people with lighter skin experience colorism is due to bullying from black people with darker skin. Amazing.

I was not raised to be "color-struck". My parents only valued education and achievement. They never mentioned "light-skinned" or "brown-skinned" or "dark-skinned"... I surely learned that stuff once I got to school, though! With bullying and rage at me out of the box like, ".... you think you so cute cause you're _________" fill in the blank, ... 'light' or 'have "good hair". Meanwhile, i though I was medium-toned, not light. So I never got the privileged part, only the projected hate part. Every day. But I learned how to fight eventually. So it stopped because I stood up for myself. Simultaneously though, i had random incidents, while alone, with random white adults calling me "ni**er, this, ni**er" that. Incidents on both sides would continue into high school. My hs was majority white. So lighter skinned blacks get both colorism hate and racism hate. But, it feels worse from within the black community. Still im not crying a river, b/c Im sure it was worse for darker or more African featured black people. No body ever suggested that I not get too dark, that seems f'd up to me! Later in the work-place, I learned from some darker colleagues, that they experienced really scarring experiences at home; where family members (who looked like me) shunned or embarrassed and humiliated them for being darker. So that information helped put the self-loathing that was projected at me into perspective; and I felt more compassion for what darker blacks are going through. We are all black to white people is a true statement. (No matter if we keep some slavery-bourne caste system of colorism going, we are all black). One last point, AIDS, and COVID-19 do not care what shade of brown or black or beige we were, they just struck down a ton if black-raced people; and shown a very bright light on the real sh*t we need to be talking about like the disparity of treatment in the American healthcare system between whites and all other groups, especially so for blacks (of sll shades and looks). We need to wake-the-bleep up, Colorism should die in 2022 and not be resuscitated...

I loved the way that the 3 of you handled this discussion so calmly and with the maturity and patience the subject needs and deserves. I'm white myself, but I can say that Colorism exists even a little bit among white people, too. Curly haired white people, especially if our hair is curly and dark, tend to get perceived as ugly. (Anne Hathaway's character in the Princess Diaries is a prime example, her thick curly hair is treated as both ugly and a joke.) Some people treat it like it's exotic and hot, and others see it as lesser than having straighter hair that is also lighter. I have quite curly hair myself, and I've had white friends with wavy hair who regularly bash their wavy hair and say they wish it was straight! Additionally, blonde hair and blue eyes are held up to be the most beautiful, even if people try to deny it. (I mean, Barbie has blonde hair and blue eyes for a reason.) Even in the Disney Princess line-up, prior to the more modern films introducing princesses of color, Aurora, Cinderella, Elsa, Anna, Ariel, Eilonwy, and Merida all have blue eyes and either Red or Blonde hair. This is a very difficult subject, and I've listened to other discussions of it turn really toxic and angry, and I thank you for keeping things civil. I'm going to listen to a few more videos and probably subscribe!

@@kathleenking47 I hadn't thought of that, but you're right. Curly hair, especially on boys, is often used as short-hand to designate a character as Jewish. 1. sis...even in the latino community you are not a "negrita" at all...you are still favoured within the latin community. 2. Colorism is ALSO practiced by white folks as well because they feel more "secure" with lighter people than people that are darker and unambiguously black. 3.I feel like the darker women were holding back in a way maybe not to make the lighter lady uncomfortable and that's why we need our OWN spaces. 4. I noticed that the light skinned lady doesn't fully accept her priviledge and light skinned priviledge...its not about white people seeing you as black or a few black folks feeling disappointed that you dont have a certain hair type it is about you being able to maneuver through so many spaces because you are not a "threat" and you are the "safe" one and also the fact that no matter your hair texture, your skin tone makes you the default preference and aspiration of the black community and fluidity and advantage in other communities as well due to your unambiguousness. Systemically, you are favored and thats the issue. 5. The colorism conversation is SYSTEMIC thats why it should be focused more on those its affecting which is darker skinned people just like you have some Europeans who are discriminated against by fellow white folks but we never say or try to focus on them when talking about racism because their issues are not SYSTEMIC. 6. The whole "self love" thing is such a facade because self esteem isnt built in a vacuum...how do you feel beautiful and get to love yourself when you never see your image being loved on? when you see your image constantly belittled, self love goes out the window.

As a Latina, no she’s not acceptable by most Latino people. She has Afro natural hair, lips appear more “luscious”, and her eyes aren’t light. Latino people, you’re either white or max (most ethnic) looking like J.Lo to be beautiful. My Puerto Rican white looking ex husband received a lot of hate bc of my tight curls and more “African” features and “ruining his race”. If you have tight curls even if your hair is soft, you’re considered black in the Latino community. It’s hard to explain, but it’s true. To Latinos you’re the perfect phenotype is if your white looking or max like Selma Hayek. But here’s the kicker, if your dark black but w straight soft hair 3A and up … you’re still preferred more than being light but w 3c-4c hair. Just wanted to address the first bullet you mentioned about her being “acceptable in the Latino community” bc if you don’t grow up in that culture, you can’t really say what you said about being “accepted”. It’s a whole other world. Trust me I get the statistics, but these stats are coming from the United States of America (melting pot of minorities)(not so much white/European people as they are the majority). I would love to see some statistics coming from the Latin American countries. Not coming at you at all, sorry if it may seem that way. But I felt how this girl was feeling. I felt maybe they should’ve gotten a light skin African American … not a Latina… like a Beyoncé or Aaliyah type to make it so that everyone could understand/relate each other better since they’re coming from similar culture backgrounds

People forget the indigenous peoples of north and south and america are asiatic people's and look like that. The standard of beauty is mediterranean. They will out right say things like - why is he spoiling his fine features / hair/ green eyes whatever by mixing with an afro-latina . Even if you have darker skin the features and hair has to be a particular type. It doesn't matter where you go in the world, the more finer asiatic or caucasoid features are preferred. Very smart women. Spot on. One thing the light skinned woman did not mention is Hispanic is not a race. She is mixed race with Hispanic Heritage. If she had an ancestry dna she would most likely be close to biracial. She was correct about having light skin is one advantage but also having hair closer to white peoples…and facial features. I have seen biracial people with darker brown skin but if they have hair like whites or have lighter eyes and small facial features they are still treated better than a very fair skinned mixed race person with African 4 c hair or broad facial features. JayLo may be seen as ideal in the Hispanic community…but in a European Spanish community she would be seen as dark and less white than a blue eyed Spaniard.

I think weight also comes into play with some of this too. If one is not taking care of themselves, and they're rejected as a potential whatever, it may not ONLY be, because of colorism at all. Some people just want a particular 'look" they find captivating. That's that! Let's be realistic (I won't answer this question), would most single Black men in the New World, despite the tone of their skin color, prefer to go on a date with Gaborey Sidibe (As she looked when she made the "Precious" character) or Normani? No explanations! I really don't need it, nor is it being solicited. If any man wants to answer this, I would just need a name. Chosen one? My chosen One is Yashuah.

Dark skin men are promoted and most desired by most women. That is me in the picture with my husband of 25 years. Our two sons and daughter look like me. My daughter enjoyed all the attention she received but my boys not so much. Howler they are all married now. My daughter married a man that looks like my husband her father. They have no clue on what they are talking about the girl that's speaking for light skin isn't a good rep I'm sorry - the ONLY time lightskin women don't feel the brunt of racism is when it's compared to a darker skin woman and you are around whites. Other than that we take on the same racism and maybe more because we get it from bothsides. A lot of what the darker skin women are saying is their reality but it comes from a feeling of inadequacy but light skin women feel that also because we have to go even harder to prove we aren't white washed in the head. I just felt this dialog really perpetrated the same ignorance. The fact darker women think we get a pass is insane lmao we do not.

I think colorism is in the black community because we don't have a culture that every black person knows and can be a part of. We have American culture and in American history the lighter you are the better. I would more or less say if this is a problem for women/men it is action/mindset that we have grown to become a part of Black Americans' culture. We should know that we are a people of many skin tones because black is a combination of colors. Having color in your skin is a blessing it doesn't matter how much color you have or how little color you have. The understanding of having color in your skin is beautiful. This frees us in some ways.

Actually no. Colorism has existed in african cultures for a very long time before any contact with europeans. If you study the arab texts on the slave trade (which existed for 4000 years ) you'll see that colorism was prevalent way way back. The north Africans and Arabs deposited their dna during forays into africa. Those lighter people were considered higher. Those lighter women were not sold into slavery but made wives of the chieftains who sold the darker people. So yeah, colorism is not new to blacks.

I feel like this video wouldnt be this confusing if perhaps you guys got a light skinned African American … not biracial… but like an Aaliyah or Beyoncé type. This Latina girl can’t really relate bc it’s so conflicting when you grow up in the Latino community… there’s colorism in the Latino community w the white Latino people and the black Latinos. Culture does play a major role. I feel w a light skinned African American … growing up w similar history and culture, it would’ve been more conducive. No jabs, but I was cringing bc as a Latina I get how she feels. You’re either looking like salma Hayek or white like Cameron Diaz to be considered a perfectly beautiful Latina. After that it’s a step down it’s almost like whites and black in the US just way worse bc Spanish dudes will only date white white women. Whereas black dark men would “go for” the light skinned black girl… a Latino man would not go after a light skinned black girl since she would be considered way too “black” and what their kids to come out as white as possible. (Of course of note, not all Latino people share this mentality) Also, and maybe it falls along the lines of just hurt feelings, but I was at work and two dark skin women came late to their appointment, our receptionist (whose dark BBW) told them they had to be rescheduled. She was met w a lot of hostility and demanded they got seen (they were two hours late). The receptionist came and got me (a light skinned) and oh boy the second the saw me all hell went loose. They instantly felt I was giving them an attitude, called me a conceited light skinned “bitch”. All I did was let her talk talk talk, explain why she was two hours late and nod my head and when I reiterated what the receptionist said I was automatically cussed out. I got another co worker (whose a 6ft blue eyed white man) to go settle these belligerent women, boy how they’re attitude changed, oh they saw this white man and shut the hell up quick. He came out and gave them our managers number and told them we weren’t going to see them and had to reschedule. Nothing different other than my black lookingness, yet not being dark is what triggered them. Nothing I said would have made them happy I feel in the US America (not speaking for the Latino culture per se) light skinned often have to do this “humbling” bc there’s more privilege than someone whose dark, but when it’s the opposite end (white people) it’s not the same. I used to work at Boston children’s hospital and out of 100 respiratory therapist only 5 where black and I was one of the darker ones. Patients family requesting they didn’t want to have me care for their child bc they questioned my abilities bc I’m “not white/Asian/Indian” so I can’t be smart enough or professional enough to care for their kids. I started w this brand new grad from Idaho, white blonde blue eyes, she didn’t have to work very hard to get promoted to a level two respiratory therapist. I had to almost “prove myself and work harder” to even get a morsel of respect from everyone I worked w (me and my other darker/black coworkers)(excluding the Asians and Indians bc they’re automatically considered professional). Just feels like being light you get shoved into this unknown category bc others receive it worse. It’s like a weird limbo state. Yet I understand it, but it feels like how a light skinned feels is invalidated. Yet receive micro aggression from both dark black and white people

Great comment. As a light skinned man who grew up around predominantly dark skinned family and friends, I caught all types of flack. And I'm nowhere near being a "passing" light skinned person, nor am i biracial, so I've always felt I'm in my own category in my own community. I'm still very much perceived as a Black man by non Black people, but not Black enough for my own people at times. It used to bother me a lot as a kid, now I've gotten to a point where I don't let it bother me, as it's literally a learned ignorance

From the beginning of time men have always gravitate to women that's lighter than them, it's a natural instinct yall can blame eurocemtrism, but colorism has been apart of black civilizations before white people were even around, from killing albinos to picking lighter skin mates, lighter skin women are seen as less of a risk because they appear less dominant, and even if not thats not true for all. They appear more feminine both in physical qualities and attraction more likely to pass on those symmetric traits to put their possible offspring, in a better position of standing out and being even more desirable, natural selection.

Exactly. When the arabs were in east africa or the mediterranean north Africans crossed the Sahara for trade, blzck africans were exposed to lighter skin. During the 4000 years of the slave trade darker people were sold by the African chieftains more often . None of this began with euro centric looks etc. The arabs and north Africans taught black Africans to do their hair, introduced tools such as combs snd beads etc. The way colorism is spoken about by these yt presenters makes it sound like life began for blacks after the Atlantic slave trade. There is so much more earlier, and a lot if it may not be flattering to black african cultures. But the important thing is to move forward not be stuck in the past.
