Great overview, thanks. And thank you for that concise explanation of the early issues. I have an old Colt Trooper .357 from 1965 (i-frame). After replacing the grips, I noticed a similar "timing" issue. Snugged down the screws. No issue.

Light primer strikes are still a thing. You are correct on using Federal primers. I am a reloader and have two of the new Python's. Both do like CCI primers, which I've never had an issue with in any other gun, and factory Aguila ammo seems to have hard primers they don't like either. Other than that, yes, they are very sweet.

This revolver is my next purchase for a home/ self defense firearm, being chambered in 357 it has more than enough stopping power and it is extremely accurate. I had the chance to shoot this revolver and fell in love at first shot, an added plus is it being a 357 my favorite cartridge for hunting self defense target shooting it does it all, I have several revolvers and a Henry rifle chambered in 357 but they are not suitable for concealed carry, they are much to large but the Colt python 3 inch barrel length is perfect for concealed carry and powerful enough to stop anything that may be trying to do you or your family harm

My wife and I bought a 4.25” version last weekend, and it’s almost perfect. Pop the side plate off, and it’s beautiful inside. Accuracy is great, but not better than my S&W 686’s. The trigger break is certainly different than the Smiths, not better or worse. The only thing that keeps it from being perfect is the SA trigger. Cock the hammer back, and then gently pull on the trigger. You’ll easily see the hammer moves back before dropping. That is something that many other 2020 owners have reported, but it’s also supposed to be easily tuned by a gunsmith. It’s still cold enough where I live to carry the Python in a shoulder holster. Thanks for Sharing! 👍👍👍👍

I’ve yet to shoot one or the other but I have handled both an original and the current colt python. From a dry handling perspective I prefer the newer guns. I think the actions aren’t as slick but not by much. But the gun over all feels a lot more durable than the originals. And with smith and Wessons QC being all over the place these days, it just seals the deal for me on colt vs smith

Me too. I have a Smith model 19 Carry Comp, Performance Center; and just this week got the 3" Python. Yet to shoot it, but the Smith's light trigger fails to ignite hard (Magtech) primers; that's a biggie with me. We'll see how the snake runs...

The original Colt Python revolvers are still fetching big money. The 2020 Python is a completely different revolver from the original. The QR code, hammer and trigger are big detractors. The original was hand fitted and polished to achieve the beautiful finish that the real Python is known for. You can’t compare the single action trigger pull of the new 2020 Python to the original!

Back in the day, I had ten tons of opportunity to get Pythons, even after Mr. Majestyk and Magnum Force. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I turned to Smith 29s. @@BATJACJW ... One of Will's friends gives him a Charter Arms Bulldog (Son of Sam special) to use if he has to use a gun. The guy also gives him a sandwich bag with a bunch of cartridges in it, kind of like it's black market ammo. They showed the shells up close, displaying actual Glaser Safety Slugs in their original design, with the flat blue plug in the nose of the jacket. Well, even though Michael Mann has been one of the Hollywood directors who tries to mimic authenticity, he really dropped the ball in the gunfight when Will kills Dollarhyde. There's a break in the scene of the shots, because someone wanted there to be six shots. The splice is very crude, as well as making all of us who know the Bulldog is a five shooter, groan. That, plus the shots were portrayed as full penetration, showing blood splatter behind the bad guy. We know better when it comes to Glaser Safety Slugs. They stop with virtually explosive effect in soft tissue. I've killed twice with them, and even though they were head shots, there was no exiting penetration with each one at near contact distance. Death was instantaneous in each case.

As ridiculous as it may sound, though I liked the old, original Pythons with 4" and 6" barrels just-fine, I never liked the looks of the old-model 2.5" snub nose version, but this 3" stainless update hits the mark, aesthetically, even though that's just another 1/2" of barrel length. It just seems to look more-balanced, that way. And don't kid yourself, even-though, yeah, there's less powder being allowed-to-burn, and less of a sight radius, you can STILL hit, with a shorter barrel, no matter what the critics say.

Pretty Much. My wife wanted a Python, and we ran across one two weeks ago. It’s nice, and she loves its appearance. The single action trigger on the 3 686+ revolvers we own is MUCH better than the Colt. The Python’s fit and finish is nice, and maybe just a little nicer than the 686. In short, the 686 is just as good as the Python. Python parts are not available for purchase, while nearly every S&W part can easily be found.
@selaxlife7621

@@frankbutta9344 me and Batjac have been saying this for years...the 686 trumps the python by a long shot.....the only thing is the python has better esthetics.. and the finish is more flashy....that ribbed barrel is sexy as heck....but the inside mechanism and ruggedness is much better on the 686.
@carlosmorris4510

I bought a 6" barrel 686 about a month ago... It's awesome! It has the nicest trigger I've ever pulled, and has a more classic look to it than the Python. Plus, I trust it's dependability much more than a Colt - it's a proven revolver... Colts can have timing issues, and may not hold up with heavy use. The Python has a nicer finish, but I don't like it's cylinder release. The 686 is just as good if not better than any Python, imo.
