I bought a Python new in 1973 4" Blue for $350. In 1978 I changed the barrel to 6". I still have it and shoot it. Best handgun I ever bought. The only problem I ever had was the firing ping would stick in the winter until my brain realized "stop using grease" and use light gun oil.

Lol. I am lucky to have a gunsmith that I am friends with locally. It is next to impossible under normal circumstances to find someone to work on them. That is an awesome story. Keep enjoying it. If you ever have problems contact me and I will get youb contact with him. He usually has whatever fixed it a couple of days and he can ship it right back to your house since you already own it and it is a repair

I too had a blued Python manufactured in the early 1970s. My gunsmith told me to be careful with shooting 158gr loads because things could break. He told me that if something happened he would refuse to work on them and there are few gunsmiths still alive or trained that are still around. Why? Many of the parts were hand fitted. There are many documented evidence to support it. I sold it on GB and made roughly $1200 profit.

I've got one made in '57( blue,4") and a 6" made in "72,. Fantastic revolvers, very reliable and accurate. Have handled ( but not shot) one of the new ones, and you're correct, the action doesn't"stack" like the older ones. The current production one in 3" is on the list for a future edc. Love the Colts!

Jeff, I'm envious. I sold my '57 bc I was young and dumb. I can still remember it and it was far and away better than the '82 I have now. Never let that go! If people could feel the difference, they would know what you and I do and would judge the 'new' ones for what they are: good, but totally different. Cheers!

I've only shot the 4 inch all these years it feels the best in hand for me . I was offered 6500.00 for the 2 1/2 inch a few years back. My grandson will get it when he 25,I probably won't be around when he's 25 but I can imagine his reaction when he gets the whole collection of 50 yrs.worth fine old peices. The 4 inch has fired 6257 Rds if .357 and 3468 rds of .38's. Yes I keep count of all the rds I fire ,in my guns except the .22's. The new Pythons will work out for many people, but the action and fit of the old can't be beat .

@@erics1723 lol ,the older you get the faster time moves ! We traveled out state 2 weeks ago to see my GS and his mom. 2 days before we left his dad sent a pic of him hunting rabbits with a Marlin bolt action . As we were leaving I grabbed my Win 63 to give him ,it has a shorter length of pull ,lighter and an auto loaded. I let him take it out for a few hrs ,when he came back he had a grin on his face and said it was a wonderful rifle and when he got older ,he's going on 11 ,he's going to look to buy one . I said it would be a hassle then and cost a lot. He looked a little hopeless. Then I said this one is yours now ,if you want it instead of waiting. What a happy little guy . We make it out there a couple of times a year ,think I will grab something out of the collection before I go out there from now on.

I save my allowance and brought Colt Python in 6" barrel in May 1978 and I love the gun and keep it for 47 years. Colt is expensive firearms and I have a friend who was a Gunmaker when I was working and living in Connecticut. I heard the rumor from some ex Connecticut resident that Colt had outsources the works to South America Company to save the cost of production on reintroduced model including Python, Colt M-1903 automatic and Police Police Positive Revolver. I have been collecting only old Colt both Automatic and Wheel gun and I can tell the different in quality and feels on original and outsources work products!

Just purchased a new 3" Python. I'm impressed. I've wanted a Python since I was a kid back in the Seventies, but I couldn't afford one back then. There is no way I can afford one of the 3" Pythons that Colt made in the Eighties (those appear to be selling north of $15,000!). As it is the Python is the most expensive revolver I've ever purchased and I'm 55 years old and I've been shooting since 1980. For what it's worth I was told that the serial number and bar code were placed on the side of the frame to meet legal requirements of different countries that Colt exports to. Sounds plausible to me. Good video. Lots of common sense.

Thanks for this comparison. I bought my first Python, a 6” 2020 model a few months after they came out. A buddy of mine has an original 4” in royal blue. The major difference between the two guns is that I can shoot mine, while his lives in a gun sock in his safe. I have never had the light primer strike problem, but then I don’t feed it cheap ammo. I probably will, at some point, replace that “loose” rear sight, but it doesn’t move enough to really bother me.

@@TerryBenton The manager of my LGS told me that after the initial orders were placed it was about a month before several were delivered. It took another year before the remaining orders were fulfilled. I suspect the reason it took so long for Colt to decide to make upgrades to the original shipment of Pythons and send them back to the customers then upgrade what they had in inventory before send those out. If I had an order placed somewhere in the middle of those 40 prepaid orders I'd want Colt to make those upgrades before shipping mine. So many original owners discovered issues then had to RMA them back to Colt for another log wait for repairs. Let's hope there aren't any issues with the blued Python.

mine is a 6" blue made in 69 The first thing that is not me is.... stainless.. don't like the look of stainless. I prefer polished stainess over matt but no... I want blue or nickel. I do a little plating as a hobby and there is a huge difference. I have polished a 629 and love the gun but it is not nickel. so far as wear.. It is greatly exaggerated but there is some truth to it. Back in the day there were a lot of revolver competitions. All involved fast da work. so guys practiced with live ammo or dry fire... fast DA work. Nothing harder on the lockwork of a revolver than fast DA work. Every brand of revolver treated that way went out of time eventually but with dry fire? These guys were doing fast DA work 10-20 thousand times. Slow DA or SA and a Python would last several lifetimes before needing some work. Mine is near 99% but I shoot it all the time. Rarely fast DA... Besides the blue.... when I put mine side by side with a new one it is pretty obvious my old one is somehow more.... elegant? But.... If I didn't have my old one I would buy a new one You can nickel plate over stainless! not easy tho.

The hammer sucks on the new along with the trigger. I'll keep my 2 1/2 ,4 and 6 inch blued . If I couldn't have an old issue I'd by a GP100.

I'LL GIVE YOU A THUMBS UP ON THE QUALITY OF YOUR VIDEO/NOT ON THE NEW PYTHONS!!!!! I WAITED UNTIL COLT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAVE FIXED THEM AND BOUGHT A GEN II PYTHON (IT HAS THE PROOF MARKS ON THE CRANE). THE TRIGGER ON MINE IS VERY GRITTY. ITS NEVER FTF (500 RNDS) BUT THE TRIGGER IS HORRABLE AND IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE FIXED!!!!! MY OLD COLTS/ S & W 686/ OTHER RELVOLVERS/ MY SEMI-AUTO PISTOLS ALL HAVE BETTER TRIGGERS IN THEM!!!!! YOU KINDA SOUND LIKE A FAN BOY, I'M NOT, I COLLECT AND SHOOT MY FIREARMS. I WAS HOPING THAT THE TRIGGER WOULD SMOOTH OUT AFTER 500+ RNDS, BUT IT HAS'NT!!!!! I GUESS THAT I'LL HAVE TO GO THRU THE HASSLE OF SENDING BACK A HIGH DOLLER FIREARM TO FIX SOME POOR WORKMANSHIP AND A WARRENTY PROBLEM!!!!!!

I am not a fan boy. I was afraid to even look at the new pythons. Mine has zero issues. The single action is not as good as my old one. The double action is better. I bought the anaconda also. That was the one i was really interested in. I have separate videos on all of them. I hate to hear you had troubles. Mass produced stuff is sometimes that way.
