Here are my thoughts on John Coltrane's latest archival album and some of the hype surrounding it. (For the record, I'm talking about the 2-disc/streaming version.)

Honestly I think you got it mixed up mr melon. This album is called The *Lost* album because it was literally a Coltrane album that the record label just didn't release at the time. It's full of alternate takes and what not but keep in mind most albums from Coltrane at that time were 3-4 tracks and this would feature the album recording of the legendary "One Up, One Down" which until now there were only live versions from. This is the most important jazz release of the decade because of its historical context, not because it's better or worse then what's happening now. To get an idea, Kamasi's thing is very much based upon what Pharoah Sanders did and Pharoah idolized Coltrane and even got to play with him on his later recordings. Honestly I'm just happy that you're bringing Jazz up on this channel and that more people come in contact with this beautiful things, just make sure you yourself make the complete research. That's your responsibility as the "world's biggest music critic" #domorejazzmrmelon

Yeah taking Fantano to task in an area where he is admittedly (and apologetically) a fan more than a critic is unfair and u come off kinda butthurt. Also, the hype machine is what affixed the MOST IMPORTANT OF THE DECADE malarkey to this enjoyable set of basically *rehearsals* for an album, and not an actual John Coltrane Project. Plus what does greatest of the decade even mean anyway? It's such desperate-sounding cash-grab die-hard fan-boy language it's cringe. The music is cool fun, laid back and at times brilliant but it doesn't count as an " important" release just because it exists.

Strange that you say it "runs like a compilation" when it's pretty clear that the Coltrane quartet went into the session this album was recorded in to... record an album. If Both Directions at Once runs like a compilation, then what the hell was untitled unmastered?
@dischordvoid8856
@dischordvoid8856 6 жыл бұрын
The 2 Disc version contains multiple takes of the same songs (there are 4 takes of "Impressions", 3 of "Untitled Original 11386", 2 of "One Up, One Down" and "Villa" on the album). Assumedly there would only have been one of each had the album been released in Coltrane's lifetime.
@MrTurnip1000
@MrTurnip1000 6 жыл бұрын
Also untitled unmastered was a collection of b sides so it was kinda inevitable that it'd run like a compilation, and besides, it's not as if an active artist releasing their own b sides themself and maintaining a good level of artistic input and quality control is comparable to a collection of recordings from an artist who passed away more than half a century ago being re-released by a different group of people.

"Black Focus" (2016) by Yussef Kamaal and "Antiphon" (2017) by Alfa Mist are both excellent recent jazz records (besides the ones Anthony already mentioned in the video, loved "Your Queen is a Reptile"). I can't recommend them enough, if you are a fan of the genre. But don't go listen to these albums thinking you will hear "Kind of Blue", or "Monk's Dream", or whathever jazz album you think is "the best". These records are their own, new, fresh thing. Edit: Oh God, and how could I forget BADBADNOTGOOD?

damn thats a rough statement. and i dont disagree. but jazz had eras. light as a feather by return to forever is up there, and wildly different that jazz in the love supreme era. i really get down to Miles Smiles. why: the (second) quintet, featuring tony-fucking-williams. plus ron-fucking-carter, and wayne-fucking-shorter and Herbie-fucking-hancock. but yes... a love supreme is a wild piece of music.

@@nicolasbascunan4013 Sure. If you want modern classical jazz, people like Branford and Wynton Marsalis, Peter Bernstein, have a big catalogue to go through, but if I want to lean into a bit more modern stuff, check out some of the following people: Brad Mehldau, Ben Wendel, Ari Hoenig, Will Vinson, Wayne Krantz, Terri Lyne Carrington, Walter Smith III, Tigran Hamasyan, Taylor Eigsti, Gretchen Parlato, Aaron Parks, Ben van Gelder, Immanuel Wilkins, Brian Blade Fellowship, Chris Potter, ... I could go on and on, but a nice rule of thumb to discover some new artists in the jazz and improvised music scene is just check out an album. See who was playing on that record and then check those people out. Consistent bands are very rarely a thing and everyone kind of plays with everyone else. Discogs is website that can help with this, they usually have pretty complete listings. Have fun!

Love you melon. Wasn't going to pester you about Coltrane, because you've got a lot of big names to review, and didn't think you were a fan, but so glad you gave it some attention (and also didn't leap on the bandwagon of "It's Coltrane, it must be an absolute essential classic"). It would be cool to see some reviews or commentary on the new releases of jazz artists like Joe Lovano, Peter Bernstein, Mike Moreno, Chris Potter, Jonathan Kreisberg etc. who are really carrying on jazz with the language of old players combined with modern senses of rhythm and harmony. Some of the jazz acts you mention are cool but not really on the level of these modern masters and others who are out in NYC just absolutely shredding. It would be nice to see some of them featured for the sheer quality and experimentation in their music, but also to push these artists into the ears of people who arent already jazz fans. Many of the "modern" jazz artists featured here and really just hip R&B, which I dig but it does not even approach the musicianship of some of the artists mentioned above. Thank you

god, going through a Coltrane discovery phase was fun. I dug back into those Prestige recordings- AHHH the prestige recordings. I just was picking up whatever had John Coltrane on the label and whatever he did as a collabo including Tadd Dameron and Kenny Burrell. By the way that album with Kenny Burrell is top notch. Jazz is a legacy music now and rock is becoming a legacy music. Rap seems to be too! I think Rap is on its way, it's just a lot further from that end than rock and roll. Being a legacy band or a legacy music is not a bad thing. Most of my favorite bands are legacy bands. I should clarify here that when I say legacy for bands I mean they're inactive and not likely to become active again. You get to comb through their discographies and look at everything they've done in context- what turns they took, evaluate any wrong directions, all that jazz. I got John Coltrane performing A Love Supreme live in Seattle... it was underwhelming. I feel like the machine is not releasing his best at this point.

As an album it is sort of a compilation, but it's high points are amazing. And if 11831 had come out when it was recorded it easily could have been a Real Book classic standard.

Regardless of whether or not you *like* it as much as other enormous releases by artists like Kamasi Washington, Antonio Hart or Hermeto Pascoal, it's simply impossible to deny that Both Directions At Once will be the most important or close to the most important jazz release of the decade. Although I personally love it, so I am very biased, the fact of the matter is that at least the untitled originals included are fantastic insights in the evolution of the one artist that you can link pretty much every contemporary jazz artist to, and people will see Both Directions At Once as a future reference when trying to build the complete idea of Coltrane's sound; a sound that has marked jazz forever and will continue to mark jazz forever. Is it the best release of the decade in terms of jazz? I don't think so -- it's a fantastic recording, unfortunately lacking in content and organization of it format for reasons that are obvious, but a fantastic recording nonetheless.

Christian Scott and BadBadNotGood have been blowing my mind lately. As a Coltrane fanatic I was really excited to hear this. It's obviously no Love Supreme, but an okay Coltrane album is still extraordinary by most standards

I think almost every "lost recordings" release from a legendary deceased artist, especially one as justifiably deified as Coltrane, is at least briefly hailed as the "most important release of the [time period]" for x or y genre by people who think x or y genre ended over a decade ago anyway. I remember seeing people claiming that fuckin Valleys of Neptune was the most important rock release of the [time period] when that was released just because it was more Hendrix. A few years later, who's mentioning THAT posthumous release in the same breath as an Electric Ladyland or Axis: Bold as Love? Posthumous releases are really cool, but there's a natural hype inflation that comes with the territory. It'll settle.
