Isn't a field goal 7 yards?

Used to be. But nowadays it's closer to 8 yards, although it could be a little more or a little less depending on the spot. They generally like to have the holder put the ball down right on a stripe rather than between stripes. That way the kicker has a more consistent visual so that he can keep his steps right.
