I felt this story has a focus of - How Olde Towne East became prosperous and diverse . We can change racist attitudes now ! How do we work on the systemic or even the ignorant ?

P, S I have a " theory ". I think the attitudes within the community's early history , may be a life of being blissfully ignorant of their own white priviledge . There was little to challenge this existence .

They did mention it. There was very little racist attitudes in the 1950s. Things started heating up after the suburbs and interstates were built. Also the riots on the east side of Columbus helped destroy the community. But before that Black and whites live together on the east side. The video does mention that, they don’t mention the 1960 riots.

Ann Boylen totally agree! The problem is also prevalent in Historical Black Neighborhoods in Houston. It at times in my view a changing of a communities in manifold ways. Oftimes negatively.

During and after suburbanization, with the addition of further migration of blacks from the south, blacks were renting these properties from whites, generally speaking. It's the owners' responsibility to do the upkeep of the properties they rent out, not the occupants'...all they wanted was the rental income. Neither party cared for the property as it should. You need to take into account that after WW2, the attitude was "out with the old, in with the new". In other words, old buildings, including victorian, Italianate/rennaisance, Queen Ann, etc. style homes, such as these, were not valued and respected as they are today. That's a large reason why this area, among others everywhere, went into decline. Also, blacks then were virtually unable to buy homes with a mortgage, so they were forced to rent. You cannot develop an attitude using today's racial climate, which is much more positive now. You also can't look at black people as having the same opportunities and such as whites, esp 60 years ago. Regardless, it's about socioeconomics, rather than racial make-up...case in point, look at Franklinton, historically and currently the worst district in the city, along with the hilltop, both of which have been largely white since their inception in 1797, and both working class. In case you haven't been in that area lately, it's just as dilapidated as the east side, if not more, and is 90% white.

Ann, it’s not anyone’s job to come in and tell you what your house is worth and a bucket of paint and a garbage can goes a long way. Run the drug dealers and thugs out and the area will be much nicer. I’m white and they try that shit in my area the police and neighbors will harass the shit out of them until they’re gone. We don’t care what color we don’t play that shit. Quit blaming everything on everyone else and take responsibility . It’s really pathetic that people won’t. Remember. Paint trash can, maybe a little wood from depot, etc . Get neighbors to all meet up every weekend and help one house at a time. This is the difference between true successful communities and ones that sit around making up reasons for why they’ve fallen so far behind

Screw the owners, if you’re living in a great property and going to be there for years go buy $100 worth the paint and fix it up. Most landlords will definitely work with you and many times take money off rent if you’re really helping fix things up. I know I use to own and rent properties and do did a lot of my friends. Sitting around making excuses on why you’re living in a dump and hoods a dump is bullsbit. When whites moved out and blacks moved in trash begins being thrown everywhere, here comes drug dealers and crime and there goes the neighborhood. It’s really sad. Nobody wants to deal w the actual reasons and problems so it’s easier to say it’s someone else’s fault. Will live a pathetic and sad laugh with that attitude

Kevin Odom , not going to say that idealism isn’t real somewhere, but it’s not realistic. First of all, it IS someone’s job to come in and tell you what your house is worth...maybe not sentimentally, but in tax assessed and market value. That’s what the county auditor does. Second, yeah, some landlords welcome you doing some work and putting money into their investment...then some evict you once you’re done, after getting free labor, free materials, and free money eventually. Sure that is wrong, if not evil, but we are talking about Americans. Third, it appears you either have a problem with black people that allows you to buy into what intelligent people can see through, or you’re simply ignorant. Go to the near west side of Columbus and explain your theory to us again. Race is not the issue. Drug dealers...yeah, they only come in black, don’t they. Let me say that i was raised to be respectful of others’ property, which i am, and to the same degree as if it were my own. The truth is, the lower-rungs of society don’t see this as a virtue. They usually don’t respect their own possessions, let alone anyone elses. It’s part of the culture of poverty. In essence, not everyone has the same mindset as you. That’s not excusing anyone from criticism or accountability...just making a factual statement to draw conclusions on. Finally, nobody is making excuses for why their ‘hood has gone to shit. I know why mine has, and i’ve kept my house up very well for 13+ years. Not much else i can do. Those who live in poorer areas don’t give a fuck about community or having the street look all pretty. And when someone does actually put money and labor into their property, it’s for practical reasons (money), not appearance. Nearly every “improvement” looks worse than it did without. So, although i believe in your ideal there, minus the racist crap, i have more a duty to follow reality.
