I got hooked on Combat! about to weeks ago. Cannot stop watching it. I served 20 years in the US Armed Forces. I see so much of my own pain in this series. The writers are total geniuses. Makes you wonder how many of them had military experience. I know most of the actors had some but the writers, they had a true handle on the subject. And writers keep a show alive. The episode "LosersCry Deal" brought back a lot of memories. In all walks of life there are phonies but that episode brought a lot of painful experiences back to the forefront that reminded me of the phonies and derelict personalites in the military. I wish, I pray, in these modern times there could be another genre/version of this show. My Father and I watched everyTuesday night without fail.

+Gary Nelson I never served. I grew up watching Combat! and remember some of the stories. I think most of the lead and secondary actors had some military service. The strange thing is that other than Vic Morrow, none of the actors, including Rick Jason, ever did anything substantial after the show. Morrow was the only one and he had been performing before the series. He was in the Blackboard Jungle with Glenn Ford and Sidney Poitier. Morrow died along with two children in the making of the Twilight Zone: The Movie. He was decapitated in a horrific stunt mishap. What made Combat! great was the acting, the neo-realism, and the universal stories of trying to do the right and honorable thing in war but retain one's humanity. It may well have been the best show that came out the 1960s considering that the US was involved in Vietnam during that era.

GREAT EPISODE ! I was wondering why they didn't tear down the Nazi flag when they first arrived . That would of been the first thing to do. You have to love the tension around the table when they are all staring at Jackson and say nothing . His guilty conscious was eating at him . That Jackson was a real top noch asshole . In our lives we all at one time or another meet a Jackson . You know the kind they want to be the Alpha , the top dog . They think they know everything and have all the right answers . Just because they talk the loudest they think that gives them the right to push their weight around. Always stay clear from that type else you'll end up like Tommy .

Saunders looked at the flag but left it alone. It was very much in character, he was not one for bravado. He probably didn't want his men to become complacent, and kept it there as a reminder of who the enemy was, and that there was still a lot of fighting to do.

I like that Saunders doesn't berate Jackson at the end. Jackson is the villain of the piece but you can't help but feel sorry for him at the end. All the men he served with before D-Day were all gone, the last of them dying from a replacement's actions in his mind. In the end, he's not a villain but another victim of war.

He is still not a good guy Look how Jackson talks down to the other men in squad. You sit right over there... good enough to take your money suckers. He wants to punish Tommy for the rest of his association. Like Saunders said you know how to care of yourself, always looking out for number one! Everyone knows Jackson is a jerk at the end. He is not a team player. The other soldiers look look out for one another. But after they found out how Jackson treated Tommy, rightfully, they want nothing to do with him. He is victim like Richard Nixon was a victim, they brought their problems on themselves. They brought their emotions to the lowest level instead of rising above it.

Have you ever placed yourself in harm's way for another person? Has someone risked their own safety for you? Even during peace time, has someone placed their career and reputation in jeopardy for you? Are you someone who had the courage to stand up for your fellow soldier? And then, have you ever been abandoned by someone who was afraid to take even the smallest risk for you? Although I would welcome it, I am not soliciting any replies. My aim is to elicit a moment of introspection. That is what this episode does to me. It actually leaves me in tears and with a deep sense of gratitude.

Can't believe Saunders isn't at least a staff sergeant if he had more than one squad and another buck sergeant who was subordinate to him. He should have some corporals also. The episodes that Vic Morrow directed on this show are nearly the equal of Robert Altman's episodes. This was really Morrow's show anyway. Very gifted guy.

@@ellenscolnik2446 no; unfortunately, Vic did it to himself!!! Nothing ever seemed to satisfy him. He ( Vic( cheated on his wife ( big time) and threatened her with physical and mental and verbal abuse. Then he realized HE screwed up but again because a lot of ppl thought he was a problem didn't give him the chance to show how great in all fields he really was. The drinking and going from one bad relationship didn't help either. He was/ is Combat and I really do miss him. No one is perfect but he really made a lot of mistakes

Very powerful stuff. Jackson's motivation is somewhat explained. But before you cut him too much slack, and excuse him as a scumbag, look at how his peers regard him. He took full and dirty advantage of the basic lawlessness of the situation in which they find themselves. "Don't be quick to judge" and "walk a mile in my shoes" may be true. But "be decent" is true too.

Vic is going for the "documentary" style of film making with hand held cameras and over the shoulder view of fire fights, something that later directors were credited with, but you seen it here first. Could Spielberg have been influenced by this Tee Vee series?

Mike Kellin provided a commanding performance with a lot of presence. He was underappreciated as an actor to my estimation. The Combat series was my favorite ever since watching the first episode when I was a kid and am still watching it! The stories always provided some kind of life lesson that is always useful, especially today. Vic Morrow died too young and was one of the best actors ever....miss him.
