My father was a Boot Lieutenant during the the last year of WW2 and will be my hero until the day I die. I remember being a young snot nosed kid sitting on his lap for each and every episode of Combat! I am thrilled to have found this on KZfaq and only wish I could sit down with him to watch it all again. FWIW, 'My Hero' retired as a Bird Colonel and I miss him dearly...

"You know, this whole affair boils down to one issue. We care for our people. First time somebody shoots at you, you don't have a command anymore, you got a family." Great line full of truth!!

I could go on about how great this episode is....and it is but the quality of writing and acting just shines through again and again on this show,so much that it will never be topped by anything produced today or in the future.Paul Burke is one of my favorite actors,great to see him here before he was full time on 12 o'clock high!

This episode is fantastic, one of the best of all. It really shows the human side, beyond the war's one. It shows how much great can a soldier be and how much difficult and awful choices they have to make. Now I can understand very well my grandfather. The 40's generation is amazing!

Have watched this episode a number of times now - and it just gets better and better. The acting is so great that even when you know what is going to happen the magic remains. Vic Morrow (Sgt. Saunders) was such a the marvelous actor it is a pity he died young

As a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's I used to listen to the grown up talk about experiences they had during ww2. My Dad was a marine that served on Guam, Tinian, and Saipan. He was my hero. I loved combat. I couldn't wait from week to week to watch it. Now I can watch as many episodes an I want . I have seen them all but love to watch them over and over.

Listen to the music, the orchestra and horns, the drums, finely tuned to each scene. Such varied emotion. So classic "Combat!"

Vic Morrow and Rick Jason are great together. You can totally tell they're buddies IRL, probably even outside the show. Which makes their on-screen chemistry really believable.

watched this faithfully EVERY week it aired in Scotland back in the 60's....took it all in,loved the "authenticity"...now you realize it was filmed in Californian summers,with American barns,outbuildings,trees,the lot...nothing looks less like Normandy in the world now..but still loved it...the Germans even spoke German!...no Colonel Klink accents here....but as usual,a couple of episodes portrayed the Brits as willing but clumsy amateurs,being coached by the crafty American veterans...when in fact it was the Canadians and British,mostly veterans of Italy and North Africa,who were the veterans.....but still loved the series.

In addition to being a superb actor, Vic Morrow has a most expressive face - and uses it to full advantage!

I still like this series after all these years.

another thing i LOVE about this show is they use so many "old time expressions" that you almost never hear anymore example: "skin him alive"

As for Sargent O'Niell, he just realized that learning about war is not enough. At most, I am told it is a guideline. The implementation of what you have read or learned in a class room onto a field of battle is quit a different story. Experience is the best teacher, but it can be a very harsh one; and second guessing yourself or others while leading men into it is not a good thing. Thank You Mr. Burke ! HEY ! I think a bomber group was looking for you about the time you did this episode.

Paul Burke's last line sums it up, or words to this effect: "No charges. Because but for you, he might have lived." In other words, Paul Burke remembered what being a sargeant was.

Did they get mileage out of those sets or what? I must have seen the CP in 20 different episodes, that bridge in 10, and that hill in 5! Was addicted to this show when I was a kid. Now as an adult I can kick back and watch it with a decent scotch! :-)

I'm a Kirby guy. He lugs around a REAL B.A.R. on the set at about 20 lbs. for realism, of course with the trigger group deactivated for television. Rest of cast uses wood/plastic mock ups. Here's to Jack Hogan!! (Kirby)

In a strong field, this may be the best episode of the entire series.

It doesn’t matter what Vic might’ve done later in his career because he made “Combat”, the iconic war series. It couldn’t be better. It will go down in history.

A Show case for Vic Morrow in this episode...I liked the fact that he didn't try to pass blame just wanted to tell his side of it. His men back him up.

Watching it again and this time noticed for the first time that in the first scenes Saunders is carrying an M1 Garand and not his usual Thompson! Pure Saunders - what makes a GREAT military leader..."I have a responsibility TO a squad of men", not "FOR a squad of men".

I couldn't agree with you more on all points. Greatest show about the realities of war that was produced. And also the greatest understated hero, vic morrow, who should have been used so much more than he was and as a good guy not a bad guy always a heavy well not always but many times a heavy and he just had such charisma to carry the hero even more than the heavy and this show was a great showcase for him and greatest show ever about combat and also one of the great episodes. yeah I agree with you thanks for your comment, thanks for whoever posted this show, my, well my hats off to you let's just say that, this show being posted makes my 'combats' hard. 😍

You'd think Hanley would have at least one machine gun team in his platoon. According to Wikipedia each infantry company had a weapons platoon so the machine-gunners would have their own lieutenant.

Good Episode! Saunders is The best kind of NCO anybody could ever Be. Sometimes when you get 2 NCOs together that both want to be in Charge it can cause Problems!!!

How or WHY some modern producers cannot learn from these older series eludes me...perhaps today its deliberate..the agenda must be followed..woe unto our children

Saunders did the right thing, he had orders to take an keep the hill. If he ran he would have been deemed a coward an court martialed. He put his guns in a good position, to bad the Germans got lucky with the first shot on the move. 2 more shots missed caje an little John from a stopped position. In war there's always a lot of maybes or "If " s.

Great Episode! The great and unforgettable Vic Morrow excelent again. This episode should be in a collection called ¨The very best of Combat!¨ The Pillbox too.

I was only 7 when I watched Combat with my dad and my favorite caricature was Littlejohn because I associated him with Robin Hood. lol

One of my favorite. episodes.....and yet another "guest sgt" out to mess with our favorite sgt.. Has anyone kept track of the "Guest Sgts" who try to screw over Saunders and his squad?

You can tell that the series was shot in Ca. All of the trees are Euclaptus.

And that is war. You see what you see and hope to see enough to overcome successfully. Sometimes your plans work well, sometimes not so well. but Monday morning quarterbacking is the pits. Easy to second guess from the cozy safe room. Saunders didn't have a crystal ball. He had to balance out the risk and then take them. And that is war.

Yeah Saunders you tell him , I wont accept it I do again and again and again as long as they're wearing this uniform !

''We care about our people''... but not about the others. So true. Each commanding officer cared or wanted to believe their own sargeant's version. This can be in real daily life, too, it's easy to imagine, we do care about ourselves - and our families, friends, etc - and forget the other's situation. This can be in the street, the neighborhood, our office, the factory, etc. Very wise script.

Paul Burke...tv washout in the Air Force.. 12 o'clock high...Marines...the Lieutenant...and the Army. Combat...any one know if he is seen in the Navy or Coast Guard screwing things up?

We can't second guess choices. As this episode clearly points out, holding territory was the objective, digging in was a means of cover, the machine gun was exposed as were the crew. A bazooka has a reasonable effective range. A man was down and left exposed. Defense and offense is called for when out gunned. As my wrestling coach once told one of my teammates, you need to reach into your shorts and pull out the man you need to be for the moment. The Burke character had fear all over him, eating away at him. Call it combat fatigue , but in these cases, judgment and blame follows. What if's and maybe's, I think vs. I know. Second guesses get you killed. The minute you put on the uniform, you're a dead man. So live like it. When its over, you do like everyone else does , cry. Cry because your friends died, cry because you were scared, cry because no one needs to ever have to live through that.

Sgt Saunders should have at least six silver stars by now

I think that Saunders was right in keeping their firepower intact at the top of the hill, instead of detaching O'Neill's MG crew to the base, as O'Neil had advocated. Without O'Neil's additional firepower, they might not have been able to stand up to that german MG nest that opened up on them.

I'm going to start by saying I've never been in combat. But I'll never forget what my HS senior English teacher who is a Vietnam Vet said. "When the lead starts to fly, it's too late to think. You have to do." What Sgt. O'neill did was Monday morning quarterbacking. As Saunders said, maybe, maybe, maybe. Yeah, maybe if the German machine gun jammed, or if the tank threw a track.........

I prefer episodes like this that portray events more typical of the GI experience in 1944. Tigers and Panthers were almost invulnerable to the bazooka. Not sure about the uparmored MK IVs although the squad regarded a one shot destruction as lucky. Ike regarded the bazooka as one of the four great tools of victory along with the C-47, the Jeep, & the A Bomb. Wonder if this role led to his 12 o' Clock High gig for Burke?

they literally had to have a company sized vehicle attachment to make do the show. Even a number of armor. Jeeps, trucks, Stuart light tanks and medium Shermans, armored cars and half tracks. Tons of surplus WW2 stuff. Just to film the show every week.

Sarge's defense is always and only "The Manual of Military Discipline", The Book, or however it's called! I don't know how episodes have ended with Saunders turning around a bad soldier with grudgeless words of confidence and encouragement!

After I had major spinal neck and hip surgery I was bed ridden for about a month and a half I watched Combat! The first thing I noticed was how great of an actor Vic Morrow was and I didn’t know much about him until I watched the series reruns! I wish we have Hollywood actors like him today but nowadays too many Woke libtards can’t seem to stick acting because of politics!

Back in 1963, when Combat! started, I was 15 and watched all five years of the series. I was to young to realize how well the show was written, directed , and acted. I also didn't understand the lessons taught at that time. Now, here we are, 56 years, (WTF!), later and looking back through the filter of all that time I've found a greater appreciation of those qualities. Sometimes something special gets aired. This show was one of those special things. On a side note, there are only two people left from the cast. Jack Hogan, who is in his late eighties and Tom Lowell. That brings up one last thing. Does anybody know why Lowell was no longer a part of the cast after the end of the second season? If anyone does, just leave a reply here and I'll get a notification of it. Thank you in advance.

Vic was Great ! But ya got to love "Cage!'

Sooner or later, an épisode like this had to appear: that is, someone to question (after the fact, in accusation) of Sgt. Saunders (as portrayed by Vic Morrow) judgement as an NCO in action, espécially if men are lost because of it. So, here it is. We have yet to see Sgt.Saunders Under internécine attacks to this dégree. (I think) Now, we catch a pretty close glimpse of how Sgt. Saunders can réact in such circumstances. Maybe we would not expect him to behave this way. Perhaps not. Sgt. Saunders who "shoots from the hip",speaks his mind without worrying about what anybody might think, do or say; yet, here, he is obviously hurt, wounded because another sergeant accuses him of recklessness, misjudgement and acting "dangerously". Now, we know that Sgt. Saunders never réacts from the égo, shooting his mouth off and so on. So, we should not be too surprised to understand this réaction, to leave the whole mini tribunal being held in that art gallery basement to go outside to reflect, collect his thoughts, not fleeing but neither at the same time allowing himself to the brunt and victim of what he knows to be unfounded accusations that might very well to lead to a formal court martial. It is not at all surprising to see Kirby (Jack Hogan) and Caje (Pierre Jalbert) testify not only to Sgt.Saunders good judgement but also to Sgt. O'Neills (Paul Burke) lack of it. Finally, Sgt.Saunders returns to give his version of it. The clinching point that Sgt. Saunders makes (as portrayed by Vic Morrow) is not that he took longer coming back trying to save Private Parker and retrieve the bazooka amunition but that indeed who knows how many bazooka shots it would have taken to Knock out that tank? Littlejohn (Dick Peabody) did it in one. Who knows? Life and War are so "aléatoire" - random that no one can forsee how a logical action is going to turn out. When Sgt. O'Neill withdraws his accusation,(42.10) look how Sgt. Saunders turns on him! "Why?..because you feel sorry for me?"(after he learns that Pt. Parker has died) He won't accept the withdrawl. This scène recalls in a way that scène in 12 Angry Men when juror # 11 accuses juror # 7 of changing his verdict for all the wrong gutless reasons. I think, at this point, the character that Vic Morrow is building here, it was very nécessary for an épisode like this one to be shown to truly get some insight into this almost flesh and blood character. As I have wondered before, this character, male or female, some of you may have had the privilège to meet or know. For me, the character that Vic Morrow is building here is very real.Paul Burke (1926-2009) had a pretty solid career in film and TV: 12 O'Clock High, Thomas Crown Affair, Valley of the Dolls, and Naked City and many other séries appearances and movies .H.M. Wynant - playing Lt.Collins, (born Haim Weiner in 1927) started acting at 19 and is known in Conquest in the Planet of the Apes, the Lost Skeleton returns again (2009) plus an almost unbroken chain of appearances in various séries over the years and .....H.M. 3:45min is an old Famous Dodge Power Wagon. Used as everything from troop carriers, ambulances to pulling stumps.

Started with S1 E1 a little over a month ago. This is in the top 5.

If I ever have to fight in battle I would not hesitate to join Sarge Saunders, Cage and Kirby's squad.

Does anyone know what ever happened to the Thompson machine gun Vic Morrow used in the series ?.
