That was beautiful. What really hits me is when you see something like these you know how many countless times in different situations that a person who thought they were a looser realizes that their a winner. Similar to the concept of the movie Rocky.

I loved this show when I was a kid…I’m 74 now and still love it!

Although Combat had many excellent episodes and guest stars this episode had both!! RIP Vic and Sal, both of these fine actors and COMBAT the series have stood the TEST OF TIME!!

Some of these soldiers we very young. My father lied about his age so he could join the army. So at the tender age of 14, he dove into the belly of WWll in 1943. And yes, he did make it home in one piece. Thanks Dad

I'm watching the series again. It was a college favorite pass time of mine. In this episode you see the child side of a young scared man try to lie and get away with it. But realizing a return to the town would reveal himself a very bad man, he had to choose. Go and somehow kill Sonders? Or actually try again to free him? Or, just do nothing? His fear of his comrads was greater than fear of death suddenly. You can see the writing was pretty good. The acting was really good and you could live the emotion. Arriving in town, avoiding the Germans, the kid finds Sonders playing dead and he was relieved, until Sonders wasn't. In a real world, this kid would get a firing squad. But an understanding and greatful superior does happen, and people do cover things up in real life. Excellent episode. I think its believeable, and while I don't think anyone would get away clean like this, it made good drama.

I LOVED Combat when I was a kid. My 8 year old grandson loves to play these war video games - he’s SO into it. I showed him an episode of Combat on KZfaq and he was amazed. Kids these days don’t have much attention spans when it comes to TV shows - they usually get bored after 10 minutes - but this little guy was glued to my computer for almost 60 minutes. Gonna order the box set - hope they have one.

I was born in 1954 and grew up watching this too, but I was so young I never saw them all. It is so great to finally sit and enjoy every episode in my retirement !!

A great episode of emotions. We all get scared at one time or another. Returning and saving Sarge does deserve a medal. He faced some of his fears. These guys were young. Some 16, 17 lied about their age. Tough way to grow up. He probably turned out to be a great soldier

I love watching Combat and 12 O’clock High over and over. Both were great tv shows I watched as a kid. I have great memories of playing Combat as a kid with homemade wood Thomson guns. I remember yelling to my friend “flank em” and other battle strategies I learned from watching Combat. I always wanted to be Sgt. Saunders. Sgt. Saunders, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne were my hero’s as a kid.

Great episode. This and " The Little Jewel" are two of my favorites, but they were all good. One of the first shows I can remember seeing on TV was Combat, but I was a bit too young. I'm now 66 and it's nice to watch them on you tube so many years later.

2 Bronx, NY boys from the block in this episode, Sal Mineo and Vic Morrow. Ironic, both would come to such violent ends. Both great actors. RIP to both, they brought so much talent to TV and movies.

When my Dad was assigned to Ft. McClellan, Alabama, we used to watch this show all of the time when it first aired in '63 and would play Combat in all of the woods all over the post. My last name is Sanders. Guess who got to play Sgt. Saunders all of the time......Thanks for airing this for everyone GR!!

Pretty impressive stuff for a weekly TV show...They could never pull this type of quality off on TV today...no where near it. I watched Combat as a kid when it was on TV in the early mid 60s. Many of us kids fathers were WW2 vets so we could all relate to it.

Combat was a hell of a show for the 60s. Good special effects and writing. Usually old shows from this era would look hokey today but Combat is still a good war show. Poor Vic Morrow was killed filming the Twilight Zone movie when a helicopter crashed on set and he got hit by the rotors.

Sal Mineo was always the tragic figure in the movies.The part was made for him.Another great episode.Vic should have been the lucky strike man!

The soldier deserved a medal as he at first ran away but finally came back and saved his senior. And it is funny that bullets endlessly come out from Saunders, Thomson or Kogan,s M1 without reloading.

I am only realizing now, 60 yrs after watching these clips, that I have had the theme song stuck in my head all this time even tho I completely forgot where it was from, a wow moment back to my childhood. Great show.

Loved the part where. The German soldier told the radio man come here he immediately picked up his rifle an came over great piece of work, never leave your rifle.

Poor Sal always playing the tragic weak character. Excellent actor, took it's toll on him. RIP MR. Mineo!

This is one of the best episodes in the series. Sal Mineo was in three of them, as I recall. Everybody wanted to be on this show.

Combat! - "The Hard Way Back!" - 1964 S03E06 [*****]...One of the Biggest Nightmares as a Combat Soldier is an artillery Barrage from German or American Artillery...Sgt. Saunders gets pinned under a House Beam and the Rest of the Story depends on a Private named Kogan. Sal Mineo plays Private Kogan. This episode reminded me of a "Punch&Judy" situation...Private Kogan does come back to save Saunders despite a Town loaded with German Troops and an Act of Fear... The Homeless Town beggar adds some Flavor later in the Story. Kogan decides to fight the Germans, and won't leave Saunders later in the show... Sal Mineo could do more acting with his eyes than most actors can do with a page full of dialogue.

Great movies and episodes ..Its like watching how the Allieds fought the Nazi...It gives us the idea how brutal it is when you got hit and left behind to rot....anyway I give these classical war series a big thumbs up....

Combat the best WW2 tv series ever & we never missed an episode & one thing I noticed was that Sanders never carried extra clips for his Thompson machine gun 🤔 😉😎

You haven't been paying attention. Saunders changes magazines often. He pulls them out of his jacket and throws the empty mag away which always makes me cringe but maybe they did that in WW II. I even heard Saunders say, "I'm out of ammo in one episode."

I think Sal Mineo is the first person that I've seen on this show who shoulders and sights the rifle correctly.

I was just a young boy of 7 when this was made but I remember watching all the #Combat #TVSeries #Movies

This was one of the best episodes I think. Very tense and quite believable for the most part. Well scripted. But one thing you do notice is the discipline in the use of explosives. Great stunt guys used and there always was retained a sense of spectacle and safety. Pity the same can't be said about Vic Morrow's last film.

Sal Mineo he a great actor how he show emotions so emotional an actor he wear on his sleeve he did. What a star he was. Just a natural he was.

This series from the 60s was always a great production and still is, but decades later it happened to us in the Malvinas Islands, in a colonial enclave of Great Britain. An attempt was made to recover them in 1982, using old Skyhawk a4s from the 1950s without radar. They flew very low, meters above the sea to avoid radars, along with Super Etendard fighters with ExoCet missiles. It was a Mach 0.9 "fire and forget" anti-ship missile, Mirage III with bombs that did not detonate because they were launched at too much speed with the target close, but that should be the strategy of the Argentine Air Force, etc., but as he said an Ensign, "we were a shot at a duck" if the English radar saw them.

Was 7 when this series started airing and my brother and I liked watching it. One time our grand father (W.W.1 vet) was there when it started. He asked if we watched that show, and we said no and changed the channel.

It always come to mind to me that The Zippo lighter often seen in WW2 Movies and widely distributed to GIs in the war was inspired by an Austrian manufacturer.

No other show like Combat.

Ever notice how Saunders never really aims his tommy gun looking down the sight? And he never uses single shot, he just generally sprays automatic bursts in the general direction.

Rick Jason doesn't get much acolades. Casting him as 2nd. Lieutenant fits his personna perfectly as an officer, a Robert Taylor type, and with a simialar voice, also I like the Kirby role and that B.A.R. Robert at 69.

What the closed captions did to the German's words when they were talking is comical. For the word "Nein" it had "9".

Spring of 1966 first of mass campus protests of Vietnam across the U.S. Despite high ratings ABC execs knew once the body bags started coming home along with protests in every major city they couldn't air this show any longer and it was cancelled. Didn't Sal get shot in the Longest Day. He mistakenly thought it was the cricket issued to them. Instead it was the clicking sound of the German rifle.

This is an exceptionally LONG episode at 51:29 contrasted to the more usual 47:15 or so. Might have been one of those "limited commercial interruptions" occasions I remember from the mid 60s.

Every time I watched Combat as a kid, I used to pretend I was a member of the squad. When the shooting started, I would take cover behind the furniture and shoot at the Germans. I used a baseball bat as my rifle. Sometimes I would pretend I was shot. Ah, the memories of a much simpler time

In the ending scene the old Frenchmen inhaled half the cigarette in one puff.

how many times was Sgt Saunders (Vic) wounded :-) :-) seems like every other episode, leg hands head legs etc etc and all this with only one magazine and a few handgrenades what a guy. I just like all that ww2 hard wear wonder how much they would be worth now.
