Wish u would have more combat vets on . I was a combat vet in the Marines in Afghanistan, and got addicted to heroin to deal with PTSD , so I love stories like this with a good ending . I’ve lost so many friends to suicide from PTSD and addiction .

I was in the Army and was also a Combat Veteran OIF-1. 2003-04. Same addiction afterward (among many other problems). I also have PTSD. I also now have an amazing life and have been CLEAN since OCT, 2014. I was actually leaving the desert as this guy was coming into the desert. We deployed 10 days after the initial push supporting USMC and 3rd ID. He’s telling the truth about how it was at the beginning. My Brother was in Afghanistan that same year. My parents were obviously stressed to the max that year. I hope you’re doing well, Marine. *on a side note, I did 30 days at CCU: Camp Lejeune by 2nd Marines. That was an eye opener, and part of my crazy life story.

I've talked to non-combat veterans that have a sort of complex about not being in direct combat and they're almost jealous of combat vets without realizing or really taking into account the physical/psychological effects they suffer everyday. For example my grandpa was overly patriotic about the vietnam war his whole life and was very touchy about it even though he never left base in Germany. Also I remember my ex's uncle getting shamed by his ex wife for being in the air force after I became interested and starting asking questions about his time in the service. I'm not saying they don't deserve some sort of recognition for serving, but society in general treats them differently (if they know, some ignorant ppl just assume everyone in the military is in a combat role) and it creates a weird complex between servicemen, both on a personal level and branch to branch.

Michael I was in Ramadi just south of you in 2004-2005. Was in the Snake Pit. We took over Saddams CIA barracks and that’s where we lived. Only difference was I was in the Marines. It was hell on earth in 2004. They were set up waiting on us to come back after the withdrawal of 2003. I was a combat engineer on the explosives side. I was attached to a Marine infantry company where 8 of us were assigned signed to 120-140Marines in 2/4. Lost my assigned rack mate 6hrs into our first mission. RPG to the face. Absolute Nightmare of a moment. Stayed like that for the whole deployment.

I know we all did are part, but I joined the Marines at age 21 and went on tour to Iraq in 2008, when it was nearly over. If I would’ve joined at age 18, I would’ve been there in 2005 and possibly not returned home.

One had turret gunner buddy killed in humvee similar to this tale ended up doing eight combat tours ,kept a photo album of his kills and is state police dispatcher. Another had co driver killed in convoy ambush ,did house to house searches as detailed here and had to be treated at va also gave up custody of sole child . Currently a mailman.

Cody jinks once said “poor people go to work, or they go to war”. There was no college option for people like us, I joined and didn’t get a deployment, it sucks but I couldn’t control it. I listened to these stories and worked with these guys. Remember to thank these veterans especially, back then it was a nightmare and these brave men and women really had to endure some wild shit. Sorry for the road you went on man, I’m glad you eventually came back. That’s all that matters man, thank you Ian for giving people like him a platform.

One of the greatest men I ever had the privilege of dating was called in 2003 to Jordan and I was in North Carolina. I went on with my life, so sad and alone. I met someone else and started dating him when my friend returned home. I remember going by his house to try and see him and he was so paranoid he wouldn’t even come outside of his house to see me. I remember crying and driving away and I could see him peeping out the window while I drove away. A man who was a decorated soldier and a man of integrity and character had become someone I couldn’t even recognize. I never saw him again after that night. I think about him often and hope and pray he would somehow be able to live his life again. God bless each and every one of these amazing men and women who sacrificed their lives for us. Tom if you are still here on this earth I hope you know how grateful I am for you and ever knowing someone as brave and strong as you.

FYI, ROE are rules of engagement. Like he was saying don’t fire unless fired upon. As far as I remember it’s an escalation of force in like 5 or so steps starting with I assume verbal communication. Same shit that police are “supposed” to follow. Just a little tidbit bit, because I had no idea of ROE before my service
