Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
Today we hear the combat story of Yonel “Yogi” Dorelis, a retired and long-time helicopter pilot who served in the Marine Corps, Navy, Army, and Air Force.
While in uniform, Yogi flew a variety of aircraft and mission profiles, but spent a considerable amount of time flying Combat Search and Rescue for the Air Force in the HH-60, including early in the war in Afghanistan.
In fact, during the initial fighting, Yogi earned a Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) with V Device for his life saving efforts in Operation Anaconda, a mission that’s near and dear to my heart because I later went on to serve with several of the Apache pilots who were there at the time.
Beyond earning the coveted DFC, Yogi also accumulated 5,500 hours of flight time, approximately 500 of that in combat. He’s credited with saving 70+ military lives and approximately 300 more in his civilian flight career as part of an EMS crew, which he does to this day.
It was a blast to sit down with another aviator and a CSAR one at that, where it remains clear that no matter what airframe you flew, all pilots experience similar mishaps, near death experiences, laughs, and red tape along the way. I hope you enjoy this Combat Story as much as I did.

Autorotation. A fun and scary flight profile that’s practiced regularly by all pilots by which you either simulate or truly kill engine power and, which descending out of the sky, maintain a minimal amount of drag to slow your descent created by the main rotor blade and then, when very close to touching the ground, pull in a bit of collective to provide a slightly softer landing.
Mustang - A term to reference an officer who was enlisted before becoming an officer.

Great interview!!! I was on the ground March 2, 2002 in the bottom of that valley with 1-87 INF 10th Mountain. When he landed I saw the two rpg’s fly over their bird. Luck was on our side. I remember nobody returning fire after the rpg’s just missed the birds. My squad leader and I ran up the “halfpipe” and just starting lighting shit up. Thanks for coming to get the wounded!!! God Bless!!! 🇺🇸💯%

That day is a Combat Story in it’s self. Not a good day to die is a good overview as you said. “18 hours”by Jock Wallace is a great book about LZ-13 that firefight. Also Pete Blabers “The Mountains, The Men, and Me” is a good look at the cluster fu*k that was OP Anaconda but he was the Delta Commander that pretty much thought up the mission. A great leadership book that I suggest everyone read!!!

After seeing the brief story that you had with Yogi at the end of a previous episode, so glad to see him get a full interview. I'm sure he's probably one of a VERY few people who served in all 4 branches of the armed services. He's already done enough living for several lifetimes and amazing to hear his stories about living it to the fullest.

I don't know why the Army didn't just put money into the AH-1 and use it instead of the Apache they are literally the same thing. the Army would have saved so much money even if they put Millions into the Cobra pipeline to upgrade it.

War hero...maybe. But as his wife(now ex) of 34 years, he's a crappy human being. He wasn't there for his family..and it wasn't because he was busy flying in Iraq or Afghanistan. It was because he was busy hanging with friends, hookers, meeting up with people in hotel rooms that he met on singles sites, having affairs with coworkers, or boyfriends(you read right) or just running away from his family because we weren't important. This is a guy that wouldn't sacrifice a lollipop for his family....so keep believing the hype you hear. Not to mention the Narcissistic rage I've had to deal with and Ive got 3 broken doors and bruises to prove it. Ive got grown kids and myself that have the real story. Just because someone is a hero at war doesn't mean he's a hero...or a good human being. I've known the REAL yogi for 34+ years....like I said, he may be a war hero, but it stops there. It took me forgiving numerous affairs, lies, and more lies to finally see the light and get out. Then, getting out took me 5 more years because of his control issues...(locking me out of bank for 8 years, forging my name on tax and lease papers etc..etc). Can't get a lawyer if you're locked out of the checking acct. Keep believing this hype. Lol

@karendorelis3683 I have the upmost respect for the military spouses of Veterans. You guys suffer with worry and the unknown everyday. I don't feel sorry for you because I would not want to takeaway from your courage. I know there are 2 sides to every story, but some of the things he said didn't sit right with me. I can't imagine having to hear what a great man he is from these comments and you knowing what the real story is.. Your very brave for getting on here and telling your side. My setup doesn't allow for me to get notifications from people responding on here to me because I don't need the drama. I hope you can find a support group for spouses of Veterans. I love Veterans but I never had much respect for the vets that mistreated their wives /children. Stay strong sis. If he keeps doing these podcasts the truth will eventually come out. God bless you.

Do you know what being referred to as a "beard" means? Do some research. Forget the sacrifice of 28 years as a military spouse....how about being told as a spouse I was his "beard". I never asked for your sympathy so I dont care whether you feel sorry for me. Maybe you were one of those relationships that he needed to cover up. (Hence my title as his "beard"). I dont know.
