Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
Today we hear the Combat Story of Mark Wales, a former Australian SAS (Special Air Service) officer who spent 16 years in the Australian Military, including six years in the elite SAS. He led special operators as a Troop Commander and completed 10 deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq, East Timor, Lebanon, and the Solomon Islands.
After separating from the military, Mark battled depression and stress disorders but found a way to power through and turn his life around. Mark would go on to earn an MBA from the prestigious Wharton School of Business and then worked at McKinsey & Company.
He has since written the book Survivor: Life in the SAS, was on Australian Survivor (where he met his wife) and competed in the Bear Grylls’ World’s Toughest Race: Eco Challenge Fiji 2019, which I highly recommend watching on Amazon with your family. During this episode, we compare the experience on Survivor and Eco Challenge to SAS Selection.
And since all this isn’t enough, Mark also founded Kill Kapture, a tough-luxury ecommerce brand and is now a sought after keynote and motivational speaker.
I hope you enjoy Mark’s honest, self deprecating, and relatable Combat Story as much as I did.

I was in New Zealand for a month and then Australia for a few weeks in October/November 2001. The differences between the Kiwis and Australians was like night and day. My disdain and disgust toward the Kiwis to this day stems from their attitudes about it - making fun of it, not selling me handicrafts at an artisan market because I was American, etc. The Australians were supportive, showing how much they felt for the USA, a feeling of brotherhood.

I’m planing on joining the 2 commado regiment and watched the Wes henessy pod cast it was awesome the sasr are a great special forces unit in every way but I honestly think that the 2 cdo wins in the tag world I think in raiding buildings and cqb they are top 10 in the world the sas would follow very close behind but 2 cdo specialises in it and I’m proud of them for it

Great interview. Our SASR Operators are World Class, as are our Commandos. I had the privilege of serving in the 1st CDO Regt many years ago. It was really an honor serving with some of the best people I've ever met. All outstanding people, resilient, with adventure in their hearts. The one thing that defines any SF Operator is mental toughness and a sense of humor in dire circumstances. Mark is a perfect example of the kind of person SF attracts.

@@SALUTE-INT-S the news coverage of what's going on in your part of the world with China seems to be big news for what I have seen of Australian news channels on youtube, compared to what we have heard on national news in Gt Britain. Its very strange over here because it is hardly mentioned (not like it should be anyway) yet it seems massive news over there, and seems very important and a very dangerous situation. I can't understand why we seem to be brushing it under the carpet as if it isn't happening. I am not saying we don't hear nothing about it, but it doesn't seem to be priority news, or taken very seriously.

@@chanang453 I'm a US Army Ranger. Our selection has been rated by both SF and SEAL guys as actually more mental than theirs (mainly due to the lack of sleep and food). I don't know much about GROM, hence why I haven't mentioned it. The PJ's training is very technical but isn't anywhere as near of the same pace as in the video above. Apples and oranges. Russian Spetsnaz is generally much lower in the food chain. It has countless branches that are more specialized and elite... think Alpha Group or GRU. Those boys are more up-to-speed. But if you're talking top of the spear... it would be DELTA and the SAS (on which it was based on). But as for my initial statement, I stand by what I've said about the Aussie SAS - mental (I didn't say the best - big difference).

Most guys enter spec ops groups mid way through their career. 5 years in tier 1 units are about average length. The open tempo along with the high physical/mental demands really put a toll on the operators.

So many deployments. It takes a huge toll on family. Most guys are divorced multiple times etc. Just hard for a young family to stay together when one is gone constantly

Many operators from Australia's SF units 2CDO and SASR have extraordinary stories from their military careers and have gone on to do great things post service like Mark. A number of these lads have written books about their time in service and have featured on podcasts like "Life on the Line". Would be awesome seeing another digger on your podcast in the future.

@@l_W7 Couldn't agree more. Have a look at the youtube channel "Life on the Line", their channel is dedicated to exactly that. They've interviewed numerous Australian vets from pretty much every conflict since WW2.

A friend of mines uncle fought in Burma in the Second World War and despised what the Japanese did to him and other prisoners. He also said that fighting alongside Aussies was a privilege and an honour- they were insanely tough and fearless

I was once at Sydney harbour trying to lead out of a chopper and had somebody slipped and smashed their face into the ski of the helicopter they then dropped into the water and all we could do at that point in time was drop with them we floated packs flirting gear and held our self in a circle to the point of people drop back drop gear and we watch that happen little did we know until we got back on ground that we are we being surveyed and all graded

It's only stupipd if you get caught..... Australia will never be more than a "part-time" army as such, we will never have the ability re. equipment etc that other armies think is normal to have. Battle plans go out the window with the first shot fired.

Be dropped out of the chopper tread water full pack full gear full wedding and then be picked up two hours after after you watch your own teammates sing just find out that there are divers I didn’t need to pick them up that is the mentality of 2C

Isn't there an investigation against this organisation for war crimes in Afghanistan? Is this guy from the same group?

These heroic stories are very sad, what were you doing there in the first place. We got our butts kicked despite all these tough manly stories. Did not have enough brains to retreat properly.

Probably because of the abc Bull shit story and hyped up media garbage about war crimes in Afghanistan. Next war the government should just send mother Theresa and boy scouts over if they don't want anyone shot. War crimes on an industrial scale will be committed now the Taliban are back in control.
