*VIDEO SUMMARY:* The six holy grail of actives: 1. Vitamin A (retinol, retinoids, etc) 2. Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide) 3. Vitamin C 4. AHAs (Glycolic acid, Lactic acid, Mandelic acid) 5. BHAs (Salicylic acid) 6. Benzoyl peroxide *_Beware of combining:_* • Vitamin A with benzoyl peroxide. Because benzoyl peroxide is an oxidizing agent, and a retinol is technically an antioxidant. So together they can cancel each other out and be futile, and be very irritating. - _How to combine?_ Spread them out. Use the retinol in one night and the benzoyl in other nights. • Vitamin C with vitamin A. It depends really, I don't know how to write this part so just re-watch the video. (9:49) • Vitamin A with AHAs. Only if you're a veteran and if you have tolerated the retinol, and retinol with AHAs together. Same is true for vitamin A with BHAs (salicylic acid), just be careful and get acclimated with the retinol first or your face will explode (not literally but you get it). *_Best combo:_* • Vitamin C with ferulic acid and vitamin E. It's just good. • Vitamin C and Niacinamide. It might be very confusing because something... something... (11:58) but studies have shown they boost each other's effects. Combine them all you want. • Vitamin C and spf. No brainer, they're good together, they were meant for each other. • Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide). They can be paired with everything, the only thing to keep in mind is to keep the percentage of Niacinamide to 2-5%, no need for higher. • AHAs with vitamin C. Both are formulated in acidic ph, so they tend to amp each other up. Be aware of this combo if you have sensitive skin. • AHAs with BHAs. They're both acids but they work differently, so they don't clash. Just be aware that you don't need a crazy high percentage when combining. Moral of the story: 1. Have a basic skincare routine down. 2. Don't blow your face out with high percentage concentration 3. When in doubt, patch test it. If you have sensitive skin, always patch test your product combo. Otherwise, go to town and make a skin routine smoothie. Edit: I'm so glad I could help some people out with this comment. We are all in this together to figure out the puzzle that is skincare.

the biggest issue with combining actives is that skincare brands have become obsessed with releasing products with high percentage actives, when in reality you dont even need that high of a percentage. a perfect example of this is the paula's choice 20% niacinamide, when all studies have been done with 3-5% niacinamide. (and all that costing like 50 euro's??)
@KristenKras

Not to mention that higher concentrations of these ingredients are irritating to some people's skin.
@charlyjgm
@charlyjgm Жыл бұрын
That's a fair point... but just because there is not a study analyzing those % doesn't mean those % are not effective, and the other way around. It's just that there's no testing. Also there will always be someone potentially irritable at any %.

Maybe 20% is added but the other ingredients in the product dilute the final content?

This is the BEST video on this subject to be honest. I have had the absolute worse cystic acne from trying out a retinol product from a unreliable company and my skin has constant breakouts of acne since. I’ve been using the la Roche acne line but haven’t seen much improvement. So! The last 4 days I have been using the Cerave Hydrating Cleanser, Olay Vitamin C Serum, and the Cerave Moisturizer and I can’t believe how a simple routine has improved my skin in such a short period of time! So my question to you! I just bought a cerave resurfacing retinol, Ordinary 5% AHA, and the Paula’s Choice 2% in hopes to marry them all together one day for absolute perfection. How long should I wait before introducing one of those at a time? 😫 I’m so impatient but don’t want to flare up my skin. Thanks so so much. ❤

Hi Dr Shereene this is a bit niche but could you consider recommending what you would do if ones sleep schedule is always switching between day shift and night shift? Would you switch the day and night time skin care schedules around or keep them the same?
@lioraelib8787
@lioraelib8787 Жыл бұрын
i had a similar sleep schedule situation and i’d say you mostly wanna keep any actives you use where they are, but maybe switch around your moisturizers to use heavier stuff while you’re sleeping. I know at least some things like retinol lose efficacy when exposed to sunlight and obviously sunscreen won’t be useful at night
@shj7346
@shj7346 Жыл бұрын
The only ones tied to the time of day are SPF, vitamin C, retinoids. SPF for obvious reasons, vitamin C to work actively as an antioxidant, and as well retinoids in general because they tend to break down and become ineffective by light - adapalene is notably much more photostable, though. Retinol was found to work just fine under SPF so you can use it in the day just fine. Another mention is mandelic acid, which becomes worthless by light.

I have the same dilemma because I work on night shift 3x a week. But I’ve tried to apply retinoids and hydroquinone on days that I’m sleeping all day before I go to work. I don’t wear sunscreen since I’m gonna be asleep but making sure my blackout window panel is down and my room is almost in total darkness. So far, it’s still have the same effect.

I’m a night shifter as well. I use my “daytime” routine when I’m waking up whether it be 9am or 5pm. I also always use my “night time” routine whether I’m going to sleep at midnight or 8am. Just make sure you’re using SPF when the sun is out and using a heavier moisturizer when sleeping.

I think a lot of the challenge is that these "basic" cleansers, moisturizers, and sunscreens, have actives in them, but they're hidden in the "inactive" ingredients list. The basic Eucerin Moisturizing Sunscreen has Lactic Acid in it! I don't want that in my sunscreen, I wanna use it at night where it's not as big a deal if it makes my skin more sun sensitive! I spend way too long just reading ingredient lists at Walgreens just to leave with nothing :(

If lactic acid is very low on the ingredient list it is a pH adjustor not an exfoliant :)

@@kategolden8840 It is also a humectant at low levels. Fructose, Glycine , Inositol, Lactic Acid, Niacinamide, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Lactate, Sodium PCA and Urea combined at EXTREMELY low levels are added to many cosmetics via a humectant mixture sold under the brand name LACTIL®

hey doc, can we use niacinamide and retinol together? I just applied a 10% niacinamide, let it dry out, and then applied a 0.15% encapsulated retinol in my PM routine, is this okay to do? also, I am SO GRATEFUL to you for keeping us safe from the dark sides of the skincare industry! your video on HA was LIFE CHANGING, you told me who the culprit was in my unusual acne flare up despite (seemingly) doing everything right! LOVE YOU!
