I know that it's not very likely much niacin will form when Niacinamide is mixed with an acidic ingredient on application. But what about the other reaction, the formation of the complex Niacinamide Ascorbate when Niacinamide and Ascorbic Acid are combined? Paula's Choice claims there are techniques to prevent this, but I'm unaware of any technique that is able to prevent this reaction. With this Paula's Choice apparently also says that formation of Niacinamide Ascorbate is an unwanted reaction. But to be honest if you look into the literature, there's hardly any good quality studies to say for sure wether the complexing decreases or increases the effectivity. Wether it's a good or a bad thing. This complex does dissiociate easily when at a neutral pH (so inside skin), but there is no data that shows how well this complex penetrates skin compared to it's uncomplexed state. We know that Ascorbic Acid has a hard time passing the waxy outer layer of the skin. There's one small study that shows skin brightening benefits, and one small study that shows a small stabilizing effect, but other than that there's not much. So I think I would say: if you see good results go ahead use Niacinamide and Ascorbic Acid together, but if you want to be absolutely 100% sure to obtain the same results as described in literature for the two ingredients, I think with the study by Guttman in our mind and the lack of further data (so not exactly knowing how Niacinamide Ascorbate behaves on skin) for the time being it's best to use them seperately, where I prefer Niacinamide AM, because of it's photostability and photoprotective properties and Ascorbic Acid PM, because it degrades rapidly under UV radiation and also because the most referenced studies showed photoprotective properties after a certain treatment period (often 3-4 days), not perse when it was on the skin. But I'm interested to hear your view.
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
I think if a product is formulated with both, they will have found a way to prevent the reaction from happening. I am not a chemist, so I have no further information on the possibilities in that regard. If you apply one and then the other to the skin I wouldn’t worry at all, as the reactions on the skin usually don’t happen that fast, so it shouldnt matter. I addressed the concern that Ascorbic Acid quickly degrades under UV exposure and it isnt really a concern I have (I use Ascorbic Acid in the mornings and Niacinamide both morning and night). I do believe in both the antioxidant properties when used and over time, but these studies are very hard to interpret and still not easy to transfer to actual usage as we do it in skincare, which is the problem with most papers. It is almost impossible to recreate the environment in which we all use our products on a daily basis. But as you rightly said: There is no harm in spacing them out if you can fit that in your routine, but I use my retinoids at night and dont want my Vitamin C together with them. And as always: See what your skin reacts best to, and then keep doing that. Thank you for the insightful comment.
@peterkloostermann
@peterkloostermann 4 жыл бұрын
@@DoctorAnne The reaction I mean is the complexing into Niacinamide Ascorbate when using two seperate products, that reaction happens instantly. If you would pour a Niacinamide serum into an Ascorbic Acid serum, you will see the yellow color forming directly. It's what Gutmann described in 1963. I'm aware of the blog article by Kindofstephan, but he references only the 2 studies I mentioned above, so not much conclusive evidence yet wether it increases or decreases efficiency in my opinion. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/jps.2600521006
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
@@peterkloostermann Yes, I get that, but as I said: It is very hard to actually design studies that are able to replicate the conditions not only in human skin, but in human skin on a living and breathing organism. That is why I think studies can help us form an opinion, but will very rarely be able to prove or disprove things like that in skincare (it is different for other fields of research). In the end you need to do what works best for you and, if you want to be on the safe side, not use your actives together. Like I said: If you can, don’t mix them and never mix them in your hand before application, always apply one after the other. I am sorry if I can’t give you more information on that subject, but as you said: there is no conclusive data, so I can only offer my opinion.

I am glad you found them helpful - it can be quite confusing. Adapalene still is an amazing product though, and limited data does not mean no effect - I have used it for quite some time for my acne and loved how well I could tolerate it. It all comes down to what your main focus is.

Hi Dr. Anne! Thank you for a very informative channel! I just subscribed. One question: if my skin cream (Cerave) already contains niacinamide, should I also apply a separate niacinamide product? Or is that unnecessary? Thanks so much! I've learned a lot from your videos!
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
Like everything Niacinamide has a maximum capacity after which more will no longer bring more benefit. There is however no "too much" in terms of adverse effects. So depending on the concentration of Niacinamide in your cream a separate Niacinamide product might make total sense.

The reason as to why I dont want to use vit C in the morning is because it is photosensitive and exposed to the UV rays can cause hyperpigmentation, why no one talks about that? Solution would be to reapply SPF every 2 hours , but that is such a hassle if staying at home, So that is why i prefer to use it in the evening with retinol. Doctor Anne, am I wrongly informed? why no one talks about Vit C's photosensitivity?
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 3 жыл бұрын
I think this is a misunderstanding - Vitamin C in the sun can oxidize, but that doesn´t mean it can´t be used in the mornings and it doesn´t cause hyperpigmentation as in lasting brown spots on the skin. The oxidization can stain the skin orange, but that usually doesn´t happen and is full reversible (hyperpigmentation wouldn´t be).

@@karinpowers1018 The vitamin C I use says not to apply in the morning because it reacts with UV (even wearing sunscreen). It's on the instructions, how would I know otherwise?! I wish I knew what it does exactly. When I say it doesn't oxidize, I meant it doesn't turn orange on my face. That might not be the right term though. But it does get tingly and itchy, starts smelling like I put meat on the grill. So yes, I don't use it in the morning.

Hi! First of all, great channel! So bad I found it just now. I'm rethinking my skin care routine because I'm struggling with hyperpigmentation from some acne I sometimes get around my nose and cheekbone area and came across your videos. They are very clear, but skin care can be so complex that I still have a few questions. If you allow me: 1 - do you think it's a good idea to change from TO Argireline 10% to the buffer + copper peptides? I'm 27, I just have a few fine lines on my forehead and eye area, which is where I'm using the product, but I don't see any results since April with the Argireline. 2 - Would be too risky to purchase the Vitamin C Suspension 23% + HA Spheres 2% when I've been using the TO Ascorbyl Glucoside 12% for 4 months now? I have never had any adverse reaction with it. 3 - Is it too much to use Paula's Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant everyday? I use it to actually try to get rid of the hyperpigmentation, but I'm thinking maybe it makes it worse. Before that, I used the TO Mandelic Acid 10% + HA, but I thought something stronger would be good and everyone speaks wonders of the PC 2% BHA. Sorry to bother you and many many thanks! :)
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
Okay: 1. I am not convinced Argireline does much, so yes, do try the Buffet + Copper one, but with realistic expectations. Topical skincare usually doesn´t make wrinkles disappear. 2. No, just make sure you don´t introduce it too quickly and see how your skin reacts to it. 3. BHA is great for clogged pores, for surface exfoliation to help with hyperpigmentation AHAs might be better, so try something along the lines of Glycolic or Lactic or if your skin is sensitive stick to Mandelic. Retinol will also help with the issue, as will time and diligent use of sunscreen.

Hello Doctor Anne, I'm soo glad I found your page! Just subscribed. Quick question, I use Obaji vitamin c 10 or sometimes 25 in the morning with The Ordinary niacinamide 10%. Retinoid with niacinamide at night. Is this ok? Should I change anything? I think my skin is pretty tough. I use A-ha and bha Peel from the oridinary and obaji v10 skin Peel both twice a week. Never had any bad reactions. Thanks in advance!

If it works, I don´t see the need to change it. But be careful, you could weaken your skin over time by overexfoliating, so maybe consider reducing the amount of peels.

Hi Doctor Anne! Thank you so much for the content you share! I was wondering whether you've heard about the brand Instanatural. They have a serum with SAP, Niacinamide, Sodium Hyaluronate, Salicylic Acid, Retinol and quite some other plant extracts & oils all in the same product (Age Defying & Skin Clearing Serum). Do these ingredients combine well with each other or are these too much all at once and cancel each other out? I'm 22 with oily, acne-prone and rather insensitive skin. Thanks!
@DoctorAnne
@DoctorAnne 4 жыл бұрын
I do not know the brand itself, but generally speaking you can combine all of these if the formulater knows what she is doing. If you put that many "actives" in one product, you will have low concentrations of each, so I don´t think you will get much effect of the individual one, but more of an overall effect.

For a beginner with skincare, do you suggest introducing Niacinamide first, followed by Retinoids slowly at night(the way you mentioned in your retinoids video)? And then maybe after a few weeks of this routine, I can introduce Vit C serum in the morning time. Is my understanding correct? I have oily, acne-prone skin and I am targetting to correct the texture, blemish marks, and big pores of face slowly and gradually since currently, I am acne free. Note-My current routine-I cleanse, tone, and moisturize my skin twice daily along with twice a week exfoliation with a gentle chemical exfoliator. Thanks!

Does citric acid count as vitamin C? I read that it is considered an AHA and is more acidic than l-ascorbic acid. I would like to know if the cleanser is safe to use during the morning with vitamin C serums (given that AHAs are preferred at night) and if I can also use it at night when I apply niacinamide (I use The Ordinary). Citric Acid is not the same as Vitamin C, it is indeed an AHA, but rarely used as chemical exfoliant, but rather asa preservative in small doses. You can use it both with a Vitamin C serum or with Niacinamide.
