One of my favorite combo mechanics is Margaret's super "Hassou Tobi" in P4AU. It will always add hits up to the nearest multiple of 8 in a combo. So if your combo counter was at 7 when you did the Super, it will only hit once and do almost no damage, but if your combo counter was at 16, it will do the full 8 hits and it is the most damaging super in the game when done correctly. This made freestyling combos to try to make sure you can super on a multiple of 8 super interesting, as sometimes you'd land an awkward hit in neutral and it isn't always obvious which route to take.

The thing a lot of people don't know about the combo system from K.I is that it was inspired by super moves from SNK characters like Kim Kaphwan. The big muti hitting supers like "Phoenix Flattener" specifically. I remember Ken Loeb talking about it on "Hold Back to Block"

My favorite simple combo that has always stuck with me is Kyo's qcf kicks, to shiki hikigane into a super. Something about the sound of the impact and juggling the opponent twice for the finishing super is just super satisfying to land. Especially when hit the level 2 super in the corner for max damage!

How could you guys forget about Fist of the North Star, the ultimate anime fighter. Combo system so broken that breaking the combo scaling is part of the combo theory. Find ways to efficiently take away stars in 1 combo and set up an instant kill combo for the next round. No breakers, you just gotta take it. The system is so broken on many levels you can't help but love it.

This podcast is dope. Just wanna say thanks a ton for the awesome fighting game content, doods! Fighting games deserve more attention, despite how difficult they can be. In my experience I'm happy if I can get a ten hit combo in Tekken or landing a basic combo into super in KOF XV. Even if I'm pretty terrible at fighting games, it has been a joy to play them and my love for them has not waned even after 25 years.

Speaking of Combo Cancels Ppl are gonna say that KOF 2002UM and 13 has the best combos and I can see y they consider them tb the best in the series But the amount of online matches I watched for KOF 2001 and 11 for me I'd say they have the greatest and most satisfying combos to pull off. The Striker and Tag Team System in the KOF series offered ways in which u can open up your opponent for an opportunity to go in for NASTY devastating combo paired with the established core mechanics of combo cancelling. They were balancing issues still but seeing ppl pull off those combos felt magical seeing how carefully they position themselves so their characters so they're assist can connect paired with the universal movement mechanics it was really intense!! Its the same whenver ppl connect tag combos in 11 then tag in super cancel in tag in another team member for another super cancel being into lvl 2 or lvl 3 it truly feels like a work of art :) See em for yourself kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZ1-hs5127mWnok.html

Skullgirls still has the best combos for me, the ability to choose any move as an assist really lends to creativity. Best breakers is Project Justice, you literally call in your teammate to fight your opponent’s teammate in a game of Dive Kick, except with a full moveset and 10 seconds on the clock. First hit wins the combo break.

BlazBlue has some absolutely nutty combo videos, especially for characters like Azrael, where players will push the combo system and unique character mechanics to their limits. Azrael will just be flying around the screen like a rocket with his valiant crash follow up, Hazama will hit his opponent from several angles from multiple areas of the screen in a single combo, it's just nuts. For myself personally, the aforementioned Azrael from BlazBlue and Slayer in GG Xrd Rev2 have some of my favorite combos to do in any fighting game. If I had to pick a specific game that has the best combos, it's probably BlazBlue honestly because it not only has its base systems for its combos, but every character has their own mechanics that flesh out their combos, from stuff like special resources, to drive moves, to overdrives, to install supers, it's one of the best training mode games ever. Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2 is a close second for me. It's not quite as reliant on tons of character specific mechanics like BlazBlue is, but it's still got a good amount of that, and I feel like it takes a bit more finesse to do cool combos in Xrd than BlazBlue, not that BlazBlue doesn't have difficult routes.

1:18:26 My issue with MvC3 was always that it felt if you wanted to play a specific "whack" character, you would *NEED* a specific team to get them to work. If I want to play X-23, it feels like you NEED a beam assist just to deal with some stuff, or just straight-up NEED doom missles in order to combo or deal with the flyers. But I dont wanna play Doom or anyone with a beam assist so it just feels like I have to compromise something just to have a halfway decent team. I do get a similar feeling of 'you can just make any team and get brand new combos' with Nitro+ blasterz though. Maybe because im less aware of the tier system in that game, but assists can have different cooldowns depending how good they are, and assists also cancel whatever you're doing so you can just find new waves to combo with any character combination. Perhaps also because its just an assist-based game rather than purely team-based helps alot too. I'll also say BBTAG was alot of fun and I feel like doesnt have the synergy issue MvC3 has as much cause of how assists works in that game, but characters in that game feel really held back so I cant say BBTAG's combos are just better than MvC3's overall or anything

You combo because if you don't, you need to win six times as many RPS games to actually score a KO. And also because they're fun apparently. Honestly I find comboss annoying to perform and get hit by, but yeah, if you don't combo you're racing someone up an escalator while you're on the one going down.

As a filthy casual scrublord I loved watching anime fighter combo vids of classic guilty gear and always thought the were cool, but in personal gameplay the fun was always in the footsies/neutral/aggro v turtle/resource managament stuff as opposed to memorizing a long string of inputs. Situational awareness, short string, reset do it again. Samsho is probably my fave 2d fighters I've played in a long time. MK10 and 11 are runners up as while they do have huge combos, the way they flowed due to dial-a-combo, they felt like a bunch of puzzle pieces of short strings. I never could make a full puzzle but enjoyed slapping a couple pieces and resetting to neutral.

Thank you Justin, Matt, and Maximillian for this video I remember that in the early days of the arcade fighting game experience, combos were more so just something that "magically" happened. It wasn't until we had heard Killer Instinct's announcer audio giving commentary on combos and them being broken that suddenly made them a huge deal.

a very interesting system i kow a lot of peoople aren't familiar with is melee's direcrional influence system. where a lot of combos depend on the direction your opponent is holding when they get hit. As in, some combos only work if the opponent is holding a certain direction when they get hit; the direction you hold depends on the move you expect to get hit with so you can either get out of a combo or hold in to not get launched as far from the stage; this makes it so that even during a combo you have to keep mixing up your opponent and tricking them or conditioning them to DI in a certain way to survive one combo, but then switch it up to make a combo longer once their DI gets predictable.

I think that my 1st introduction to a fighting game with a combo counter was Darkstalkers. Playing X-Men: COTA, Marvel Super Heroes and X-Men vs Street Fighter made me want to learn combos. But now at the age of 41, I'm perfectly contempt with the mid level bread and butter combos, my muscle memory is no longer strong enough to remember advanced combos.

I have played all kinds of different fighting games. However, combos have never felt more rewarding than in Killer Instinct. Which is a game based entirely around a solid, but somewhat fair combo system. You have different levels of strength in developing certain combos, ways to implement shadow moves for extended combos, combo ending moves or ultra-combo finishers, or even escape a combo with the combo breaker feature. Out of all the different fighting games I own, Killer Instinct has the easiest combo system to learn. The hardest game for me to learn combos in would have to be Tekken. I love the Tekken series but the combo system in that game is hard as hell. I'm used to using light, medium, and heavy attack buttons, with or without assists. But the Tekken games are a bit trickier. I've never even pulled off a 10-hit combo. 😅 Side note: I'm also a huge fan of the KOF series, courtesy of watching numerous KOF legacy videos from Max. I practically became more of a fighting game fanatic through his gameplay of the series. ✌😇

My Tekken tag 1 Julia combos are still by far my most viewed videos, They are the reason I made a channel. In the Tekken tag 1 days Julia had a juggle off her hop kick that was dubbed the wonder juggle it was simple yet took off half your health. Julia is so far removed from her original design now it pushed me away from Tekken. She was my favourite video game character along with Yuffie from FF7, I seem to gravitate towards smol characters who do a crapton of damage it's funny. Akira in SF5 has been a blast I started a few weeks back and she's so much fun I wish there was more of a chance for her to be in SF6 but it's a pipe dream.

I may get a bunch of hate here but for me Street Fighter 5 has done combo's really well. Most folks can do simple bread and butter combos while better players can do some pretty flashy stuff using meter and whatnot. V shifts and V reversals are also a good way to try and avoid / get out of combo's. And even the bigger ones the good players do seem within reach of lesser players because they are not crazy long or over the top. I know the game released in a poor state. And it's always popular to hate on the current featured product. But I believe in 5-10 years down the line SF5 is going to be looked back on, in it's current end game state, as one of the better fighting games of the period.

I think before with the older games we just enjoyed the time and combos were not that important in our minds. Playing MK11 in a barbacue against friends that knew the combos i was able to reach finals just by timing and reaction but i lost that final. Now is almost like you need at least some combo knowledge for each game. The last for me and my friends ha e been; Guilty gear strive, that has some easy and fun combos, tekken 7 is pretty different but we manage something and King of fighters that really has some hard ones.

Love the channel. Just wondering if we can submit topics for episodes. I think a episode dedicated to pop offs would be hilarious. Good pop offs bad pop offs, Which were memorable to you, Justin on evo moment 39 crowd, woshige in g.g. lol lots of good talk here.

Two ads within like 10 minutes of each other? Maybe do the first ad before the discussion begins? That may make it feel a bit more spaced out.

Yeah but imagine how hype or cringe it would be to watch a whole EVO style tourney that considered combos to be glitches and were banned.
