I’m in the OC and girl... I feel you so hard on this one. We also have two kids and want to stay in their school district no matter what so we’re even more limited. But dang the rent is getting scary. We got lucky with where we rent now but if they asked us to leave for some reason we’d be toast. And there’s nothing to buy in our neighborhood for less than $1.2M. Umm what? I’m sorry? Is this a whole city of divorce lawyers and plastic surgeons? Like what do these people actually do for a living, I don’t understand 😂

The markets are crazy. I’ve been a realtor outside NYC for 25 years. When we get multiple offers on properties trust me it’s a process for the seller/ landlord to decide. Keep at it and don’t make allowances for things that are deal breakers. You should try and make a connection with the rental agents that work predominantly in the area you want. They can let you know before things hit the market so you can be first in.

The issue I noticed with my partner when we were renting is the leasing agent would casually mention kids even though we are happily child free by choice. They would go with other renters who had roommates instead of long term partners because they were worried we’d have kids. Our best luck was when we said we were roommates.

When we were looking for a house we got outbid a couple times and I cried to my realtor about it 😅😅 but she told me “Girl, those houses weren’t your house. When you find the right one, you’ll get it, and you’ll actually be glad you didn’t end up in the other ones.” Wouldn’t ya know it, that’s exactly what happened. When it’s meant to be, it will be 🫶 Wishing you peace in the meantime! I know it’s really rough in the moment.

Sounds like the rental/owners are making bank on the application fees.

In Australia when we view a rental it is usually before the tenant moves out so seeing all the tenants stuff is normal here!

Hi! As a 36 year old woman who has moved constantly their adult life, it’s never been more difficult to rent than recently (at least my experience here in Texas). We have had ups and downs with credit and income, and an apartment complex has tried to screw us (still battling that 😩) but are very thankful to have found our current condo amidst our struggles last year. I think that since you guys have some leniency with time, have stable income and credit, the right place will happen for you ❤ I have heard from all over that the rental market right now is nuts due to a shortage of rental units. I find it funny that everyone is outraged that some apartments don't come with a washer/dryer when in Germany many apartments don't come with a KITCHEN! The whole kitchen is gone and you have to buy one, cupboards, sink, countertop, everything!!!

Here in the Netherlands you almost always have to have your own washer, dryer, fridge and even dishwasher. I was kind of shocked when you said that 40 applications was a lot, I applied for a small townhouse and I got to #30 of the 730!

I feeeeel ya. My partner and I just finished our housing search last week near Seattle (similarly bad to LA). We finally found and were approved for a place that checked most of our boxes…but the journey along the way was not for the weak 😆. Saw one place we liked at an open showing and they like sprinted out to go apply like this was some sort of game show. I just can’t with all that competition. Sign of the times I guess. But yeah, hang in there and pre-apply for all the ones that seem like they can be the one. But my god I hated having to upload the same documents over and over. It’s so demoralizing.

Here in Utah that's exactly how EVERY SINGLE RENTAL IS. You go look and see if you like the house, then apply. Pay all the fees including pet fees etc. In the mean time they show it too a hundred other people and they all apply too. They let it sit for a while and rack up app fees etc. then they finally choose someone to rent it too. I'm not sure how that is legal but they all do it. Sad I know. We've spent Sai much in fees we could have in had a nice down payment on buying a house.

Omg when I moved to WeHo, I viewed this studio that could only fit my bed and was denied because someone had put down SIX MONTHS of rent upfront. Like… if you can afford that, maybe don’t rent out the only affordable apartment in the area?!

The cost of housing makes me wanna cry 😭. We currently own a townhouse in AZ and were looking into relocating to CO and buying there would be ATROCIOUS because of interest rates so we thought okay maybe rent so we can see what we actually like (neighborhood wise) and the rent is like more than double our current mortgage and not much cheaper then just buying. We applied to two places and was ghosted 🫠. Which we're choosing to take as a blessing now cause we think we're gonna now stay in AZ. Trying to move is so humbling lol.

I feel your pain...I've been sitting on a home purchase approval ( not pre approval)for 8 months,we have a sizable down payment ,30 day close easy peasey ,right? nope ... my realtor sends me the listings of the homes that meet our wants & needs ..i do a drive by ... then text him the homes we want to walk through...in 8 months theres only been 8 walk throughs....2 of those 8 were perfection....we put our offers in ( which is the asking price) and still did'nt get the houses....i'm getting freaking burn out already ...the high high from walking through our last home we're ever going to buy to the low low low of not getting it messes with your mental health...we need to stay in the area we are in for my husbands job.... if he were retired , it be easier to find a place because we wouldn't be locked in to one area ...but damn....housing market is rough out there ....good luck on your hunt !

Yup, same craziness happening here in Gold Coast Australia 🇦🇺 I don’t even e remember how many places I applied to and got denied. Then months later we got the best house I’ve viewed and the price was also cheaper than a few other worse places I looked at. Paciente is the key, but also checking the rental apps every 5 minutes lol

I learned just recently with certain property management companies. They'll charge an application fee but for 30-90 days will let you apply without a fee due to you already paying the fee but not accepted for a place to rent.

Yes it really is timing. Me and my husband also try to think that it wasn't meant to be if we don't get a certain opportunity at that moment. Often times later we get an even better opportunity. But i am someone who can really get frustrated if i really wanted a certain house or space for your company and we don't get it. Especially when i already pictured ourselves there. It's the autism that makes it hard to deal with things that suddenly aren't going to happen.

Its so interesting how different the places are in the US - the number of bathrooms, the walk in closets.. also here you nearly always have to bring washer, fridge etc

I would apply when sitting right outside the house. Also, working with a realtor even if renting. They often have access to homes before they’re going onto the market and let you know what’s coming up. Sellers/renters often are just going to look at the first few bids unless they’re all busts then move on to the following.

its wild how the housing market is now. we can't basically move in Vancouver because if you move now a 2 bdr is like 4k a month for rent. Also no one allows pets so there are like 1/5th the amount of apartments you can rent if you have one. It sounds like LA is the same.

I'm so sorry girly... We were in the same boat back in 2022!! It was awful. I was curious though, have you considered moving back to TN?? Or maybe NC? You may have talked about it already but I can't remember your thoughts on that. Now that you don't have pets it'll be easier to move across the country. Either way, hope something works out soon!!!

if you’re willing to go south (Laguna Beach area) you’ll have no trouble finding a rental with very little competition!

We went through all of this trying to buy our home in 2019. People were outbidding us going well over the asking price, or there were multiple bids, cash only bids or it needed a lot of work that would put us well over our budget. After 3 months, we changed up our search parameters and ended up finding something 3 miles from the beach and near major freeways. It was within our budget and allowed us to make some upgrades before moving in. Because of the area that we are in, our equity has really grown over the last 4 years. Moral of the story, try changing your search parameters.

I’m watching from Australia and I’m shocked that you don’t have to buy your own appliances 😅 and also you have to pay to apply! Woaa Also, renting is so hard everywhere! I’ve been in my 1 bedroom apartment for 1.5 years and when I was looking at places it was insane! I saw a place where I had to queue (yes queue) with other like 20 something people for a 1 bedroom apartment 😣 madness. One last thing, I feel like agencies lie with their photos, you get to excited for a place and go and see it and it waaaay different haha specially when it come to sizes 😔

I hate to be that person and I’m not sure if it’s already been shared but be careful about taking video of people’s homes and then posting on such a large platform. I’m a real estate broker in Houston, TX and in my market, you need written permission from the homeowners to take video. Even if you’re not showing the address, it’s a thing here so you may want to double check how it is in LA 🤷‍♀️

I bought my house 2 yrs ago and I was the first person to see it. There was 4 people on the open house behind me. I fill the paperwork right there while people was going up the stairs to see it 😂

I looked at a house I loved but there were no lights in the bedrooms. The house was like 60 years old and they said typically at that time they didn't do overhead lighting. That was weird to me but still loved the house.

It sounds like why you have to do is look at places a few hundred bucks under the price you actually want to pay, and then overbid. Not saying that is right at all! Just my thoughts on what it might take to get a place in LA right now.

I would go back 2 AZ if I were you and just come back to LA for the weekends or so..or rent a small studio or so only to record..this market in LA is crazy..this people must all be loaded..and writing an application ??to rent a house..looks like applying for a job..when you least expected it there will be a something popping up ❤

That place without lights in the bedrooms. The grout in the bathrooms! Yuck! It was making me crazy. I wonder why the landlord doesn’t hire someone to clean these places before trying to rent to someone else. 🤪

I hate glass doors too that are in bathrooms,I remember the one apartment my family lived in when I was little had one and I had walked into the glass door because i wasn’t used to it lol

What does age have to do with it? It’s the second time that some variation of it has been mentioned-you’re young or in your 30s. Does the landlord see 2 35 year olds more “ideal” than 2 45 year olds????

I'm not sure if you're willing to move outside of LA County, but I'm in riverside and I have a 1bdm 1bth with washer dryer, assigned parking, appliances and includes water/sewage for $1600/m. This is rhe average for my area, and the 2bdm are $2300 in my complex. This seems to be the average in my area (riverside/corona) but I'm also only a 30mins drive to Disneyland, 20mins drive to Yorba Linda, etc etc. It gets hot but it's worth it financially imo
