A shock of cold is healthy after a shower. Some people just turn on the cold water on purpose for that. I get it if you live in a cold climate, but if you live in a hot climate, I would totally recommend a doorless shower instead. Specially, in humid areas where the mold and mildew problem is a huge pain in the butt to keep clean without a lot of toxic chemicals. My recommendation: a doorless shower, in which the water sprays at a wall and you have like a U-turn to get out. The water doesn’t spray towards the exit. And then, on top of that, shower wall, and floor surfaces that are super easy to clean, and are resistant to scouring, and don’t have any grout or seals: these are a pain in the butt as well. I’m issuing out request that builders make showers out of solid surfacing like Corian etc, and create seamless joins Exactly the way they did for my integrated kitchen counter/sink, and everywhere that my solid surface counter meets in corners. This stuff looks fantastic. 22 years after installation. Nothing toxic is needed to keep it in fantastic shape. And while we’re at it, why not have a door to the outside and a little privacy fence where you can take your whole darn shower outside and even do your dry skin brushing, which is better than using a loofah on wet skin for keeping it young looking. Talk about your garden bath! Look for a flooring that is non-slip yet easy to clean. That’s probably the hardest thing to accomplish in a bathroom, And ideally, it should be the same surface that flows from indoors to outdoors if you have that fabulous outdoor space.

Good points here. I was sad to see the slatted walls, but when you mentioned they could be hiding places for critters, I was with you.😲🕷 Regarding the maximalist point, I think collections in general are not a good idea. My grandmother collected salt & pepper shakers and she was always trying to pay my cousins and I to clean & dust them. My mom collected earrings and displayed them on corkboard but grime and dust were too difficult to keep up with them. I used to be a collector of nautical items but shells and related items were a pain to keep clean, so I no longer keep collections. All my knick knacks are good sized and and easy to dust. Thx for the video.🙂
@willsx2
@willsx2 2 күн бұрын
I think the trick to displaying collections is to put them behind closed doors so they don't need to be dusted that often. Glass jars with lids and glass boxes also work well for displaying things like shells.

Another viewer commented that "Sometimes designers think so hard about aesthetics that they forget the practical purpose of what they are designing". This is so true. I'm going into the interior design field, but I'm also very practical! Anything you bring into your home has to be easy to clean! I agree with all of your choices, but one: I would rather clean the two mirrors in the bathroom over the two sinks. The oval shapes of the sinks and the mirrors complement each other so well. Also, I have marble on the walls of my shower. Big mistake! Marble is so delicate that you need a special cleaner so you don't ruin the finish. High maintenance! Thanks for your videos!

Our house is easy to clean. Real hardwood floors, no rugs, no upholstered furniture, minimum hardwood furniture, clothes are hund up, and nothing on surfaces. Use a boat varnish for real hardwood floors in bathroom and kitchen. The boat varnish seals the hardwood, it becomes waterproof and long lasting.

Agreed. My husband had shower doors installed in the tub and stand up shower. Constant squeegee-ing. After our divorce I bought a condo. Installed a beautiful fabric shower curtain and a mildew-resistant liner. I've had the shower curtain for 7 years now and I still love it and people always compliment it. Besides.....I don't like the visual of seeing the actual tub like you see with a glass door. A beautiful shower curtain to a tub is like beautiful drapery to a window

@@JamieM470- I really miss you tiles I picked for the previous home, Daltile what is the company, I think the tile was called Persian gold. It was textured and looked a little bit like slate. It came in a neutral, gray version I believe, and we picked more of a peachy color to go with our cabinets at that time. No slipping. In retrospect, I wish I had purchased that for our current home and pay the extra because it was the top level option. I also try to confine messy cooking to one day of the week, And doing pre-cooking if it doesn’t affect the quality of the food. It just makes it so much easier the rest of the time.

@@gailwilliams5278- 04 where splatters go, if you fry in your house, lol oil is going to be vaporized and carried To a lot of different surfaces. That’s why I having a really good vent fan over the stove is super important also, cleaning the vent filters. I won’t have the unique experiences cleaning a kitchen where the vent hood has not been installed at all. The build up on the cabinetry was hideous.

I listened to the whole thing. The best would be if you just move into a cardboard box and when it gets grubby, find a new one.

I'm doing an open shower remodel down the road just for handicap accessibility but am adding a shower curtain rod to keep the heat/cold & water contained. ETA: No one wants to mess with a glass wall. It's just dumb because of the extra maintenance. Our bathroom is also our laundry room & we've had a couple water accidents that have leaked outside the bathroom & I really want to put a 1/2" basin all the way around with an open drain (in the shower) to release it instead of dealing with leaks & potential mold issues down the road.

Water going where it shouldn’t go is always a problem. If we ever move, i’m aiming for a one story with all water downstairs even if we have a “Texas basement“ for a better climate control (finishing and climate controling your attic helps! At least it does in our climate!) We have had our share of leaks from upstairs to downstairs, and I’m done with it. That said, a properly designed door less and glass-less walk-in shower is a huge work saver.

A great solution to a badly designed doorless shower is to make sure there’s a handheld sprayer added. This is a super easy fix it not only lets you point the spray where you want it when you turn on the water, it also lets you control where the spray goes during your shower.

Where I'm from, bathrooms and kitchens are tiled floor to ceiling, or between top and bottom cupboards. Half tiled walls looks weird. Cleaning tiles and grout is really a non-issue. We also have dual basins and mirrors in the bathroom. Again cleaning is not an issue. We also have walk-in glass showers, open on one end, with trench drains. The floors of the showers are constructed so that water drains off away from the opening. The shower heads are also placed so that they do not spray towards the opening. The metal covers on the trench drains can be removed to clean them out if so required. The drains itself are designed in such a way that odours are trapped, similar to a u-trap. I have been cooking meals for 38 years and really don't understand why cleaning spills is a problem. You mess, you clean it up immediately. You also get sealants to protect marble from absorbing stains. It seems most of your gripes are based on hearsay and not personal experience. We have had slatted walls, unplastered brick walls and never were there any bugs hidden in them. Maybe if one never cleans them, it could happen. Same applies to fluted furniture. You vacuum regularly and no dust accumalates there. You said the video is light hearted but really it is exagerated.

I think the older people get, the slower they get, and it takes longer to clean anything so… Sometimes having one mirror instead of two is a good idea. Of course I have huge mirrors. I need a stick with a handle to get to the top, and they go all the way across a long vanity and a short vanity.

My grandma had seasonal, artificial plants & she cleaned them with a teaspoon or so of salt in a trash bag & shook out all the dust. She also stored the bouquets in trashbags when not in use. She only had 5 bouquets she really liked, so it wasn't a big issue to deal with.

My house is a mostly white, Japandi style that's relatively easy to keep clean except for the floors. The counters are just cheap, durable laminate. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Fools & their money are soon parted with expensive, porous or easily scratched options. The same goes for stainless anything. America needs to get on the ball with European-style kitchens that are very easy to maintain & the fridges are customizable with panels that will match the rest of the cabinetry. Speaking of... those goddamned shaker or other, traditional cabinet designs need to go. They are visual clutter & it's a pain in the ass to deep clean them with a toothbrush

I loved my white laminate counters with a bullnose edge at one house we lived in. But I only lived with it for six years and it was brand new. I’m not sure how it would look after 20 odd years. Our solid surface counter, on the other hand, looks fantastic after 22 years. Plain, white, durable, no stain can survive on it. While it’s theoretically possible to scorch it, scorch stains can be buffed out also. Chipping can be buffed out, too.
