Years ago I asked Jesus into my heart, only then to understand that no where in the bible does it give such instruction. A few years ago I was at the end of my rope. Sick with not job, they were going to take the house and me with a wife who was unable to work. I remember telling God to just let me win some money so I could fix the problems. See? I had this issue of blaming everyone one around me, till the Lord showed me my sins. The bible talks about people praying for the rocks to fall on them, I was just wanted to find a crack and fall into it. My heart was broken, I knew "asking Jesus into my heart wasn't going to do. I remember the thief on the cross who just had a simple request, "Lord remember me..." In tears with a broken soul before a Holy and Just God, I cried out for mercy. First time I heard this song I so understood it. Thanks for sharing

I think if we are honest with ourselves we have to agree with the phrase "Prone to wander, Lord I feel it", and guard aganst it with His strength every day.

“Prone to Wander, Lord, I feel it.” Is the best line in the song. It describes the human condition, anyone who can’t understand that line has some issues as well. That line and the lines that follow give me so much hope and peace.

When I was a young believer I was prone to wander and this hymn resonated with me. Now I In my 70’s i am settled into his love and care- never to worry about wandering again.

I’ve literally cried the entire time watching this video. I can see myself in Robinson’s story. I love that he said “… prone to leave the God I love” because it almost doesn’t make sense that one can love God so desperately and yet still be prone to wander. “Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above”, that’s my prayer today.

This is one of my favorite hymns and I have always felt that same urge to wander. I believe that to be a normal part of being a Christian. A normal part of our fallen condition. But I also believe that once we are saved, nothing can snatch us from our Savior’s hand. We wonder after our own desires. I have gone through periods of anger and depression where I turned from serving and worshiping God, but the Holy Spirit never stopped trying to bring me back to Him. ❤

The "praise songs" of today seem to be written with the presumed intention of "I need to write another new song." The great hymns -- in all fairness some of the later 20th century music as well -- are birthed from personal experience and being drawn to our Savior out of deep appreciation and surrender to God's will. Keep all verses.

Yet God has been very merciful to me and like the father of the Prodigal son He has mercifully forgiven me time and time again! We, who have been sealed by the Holy Spirit, have an eternal inheritance that will never fade away.

This is the favorite hymn of a man I know. It's because that tendency to wander is also his experience. Knowing this man's story, some people feel so badly about themselves that they is constantly vulnerable to the internal doubt and whispers about himself.

So I learned to die daily, seek and talk to my God daily, give my life anew daily, and I shall do it with the help of Jesus for the days to come till my silver cord is cut. Seal it for thy courts above. It shows that he really longed to be with God. He did not want to be lost. Hope he repented in the end.

I cannot help but believe that I will see Robert in HeavenHome and tell him how grateful I have always been for this hymn. The reason I feel this way is 2 Timothy 2:13 “If we do not believe, He still remains faithful. He cannot deny Himself.”

This was a favorite hymn of my father's, and I love it as well. It is such an honest expression of the writer's struggles with his sin nature. I don't see it as sad; I think he looks forward to the purity of heaven so much that, like Paul says in Philippians 1:21, for him "to live is Christ, and to die is gain." By the way, I did read in a book I have about hymns that the writer did return to faith in Christ after backsliding.

Yes, the first time I heard this, I was watching the movie, 'Love Comes Softly'. There's a scene in the movie where one of the stars in the movie is singing a verse and it endeared me to the song. Especially the verse that says 'Prone to wonder, Lord I feel it'.

Yes, we need to search these beautiful hymns as their lyrics are powerful words for the church. And the history behind each hymn is worthy of thought for us today. First Peter 2:23-25 you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

Than God for January 15 2017 when I assisted to a reformed church in Harlingen Texas and I heard this hymn so lovely it was like water to a parched land. Ever since I been assisting to listen to this sound word of God and I been greatly blessed, I speak broken English but the merciful God and his Holy Spirit is teaching me. Thanks for this powerful hymn and many blessings to you and family.

I was blessed to have been a layman performing as the church song leader. It was my duty to select the hymns for each church service. I am not a trained musician, however previously, I had sung in many school choirs and could follow sheet music. I had a competent pianist and it was amazing how the Lord would guide me with hymn selection that matched the Pastor's sermon. This is one of the songs that I selected for congregational singing, quite frequently. The Lord saw fit to bring me to another place 2000 miles away, and I no longer am involved with singing, as the churches here no longer sing hymns. I do miss it.

Yesterday, after a special experience with the hymn Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (which I’ll share briefly below) I searched for renderings of it on KZfaq. That’s when I came across your video. I loved your calm and peaceful discussion of the beautiful hymn and your singing of it. Thank you. After a heavy Saturday’s work making a French drain in my backyard I came into the house. I was exhausted. As a soon-to-be eighty-year-old, I had found digging the trench in the heavy Northern Ireland clay soil quite backbreaking, not to mention filling the fifteen-meter ditch with perforated pipe and crushed stone. I was too tired even to pray about a spiritual purpose for the usual monthly fast beginning right after our supper. So, after a game of Settlers of Catan with my little wife, I went to bed. Waking early, I turned to the new (digital) hymn book, ‘Hymns for Home and Church’. There at No. 1 of the first thirteen to be released, was ‘Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing’. Singing along I was invigorated with fresh spiritual momentum. My thoughts went back nearly fifty years to recall how “Jesus sought me when a stranger” and brought me to His fold. How grateful I am for Jesus Christ and the atonement He wrought in Gethsemane and on Calvary. How blessed too we are by those who compose sacred music for worship. Thank you again. Raised on hymns.

I'm from Singapore and I recently had a vacation to Australia. Was visiting the town of Cowaramup and saw a Church there. Was a Sunday morn so my mom, sis and I decided to have a look. Turns out that the Church was run by and old couple. We asked them if we could play the piano and they gladly agreed. This was one of the songs that immediately came to my mind. In the end more people started to come into the Church and some started singing! A great reminder that God is not only the God of Singapore or the US, but the God of the universe!

I love how you speak the truth. I know many believe we are once saved always saved, but that is not the case, and this writer clearly understands that as he himself felt his lost condition. I am glad though as a backslider myself was able to find God's forgiveness and restorations some 15 years ago. We can walk away from God at any time. My grandparents sang it together as my grandfather passed away at 62 in the early 1940's. It always and forever will...bring tears to my eyes.

I first heard this song sung by a lovely gentle man on the Gaither channel. It brought me to tears then and again today when you sang it. It reminds me of all that the Lord has forgiven in me and how I need Him to keep drawing me back from wandering away. Not that I have any intention of leaving the Lord. I love Him. But distractions interfere sometimes. This world is full of them. But He reminds me that we are in this world but not part of this world. Guy Penrod sings a beautiful song, This World is not My Home. I love hymns so much and this is one of my favorites. I really enjoy hearing about the history of them. I grew up in a church that almost exclusively sang hymns for worship and I just grew to love them. I think all the verses were written by him because they all capture the struggle with sin and the longing for it to be gone. By the way, I love your voice. What a lovely story, of a God who speaks to the wandering author of these verses through a woman in a coach, perhaps even an angel, who reminded him that the God who gave him those words years earlier would be there for the prodigal when he turned towards home. Thank you for sharing this anecdote, which leaves room for hope that Robinson returned to his faith before he died.

I’m struggling to turn from long-established idolatrous ways with food; I have looked to food for comfort, and for that which only God can provide. He has been patient with me over the years, as He has unraveled, healed and delivered me from the many reasons I became bound, but as you say, a time comes when He leaves us to ourselves to decide, “What do I believe? Where is my trust? What do I truly desire? (see Ex 16:4, 20:20; Deut 8:2, 16; Jdg 2:21-22, 3:1, 4). I love my Lord Jesus and want to be with Him always and forever, but in the hard moments of life, when ingrained habits insist on compliance with past ways, what will I do? Will I take the easy way, in line with bad habits? Or will I do the hard thing (initially hard) that will produce greater blessing in my life? “O Lord God Almighty! Thank you for this story and for this hymn! It’s sobering, Lord! Help me to keep food in it’s proper place, in Jesus’ name. I do NOT want to be like this man, left to live the consequences of unwise choices. “Lord, your Word tells us … You let us live out difficult consequences of sin so that we will know the difference between serving you and serving anything in the world (see 2 Chron 12:1-2, 6-8). “I now turn and RUN from old sinful ways, because always, after initial pleasure, there is ongoing pain and grief. “But with YOU, Lord, there is initial struggle and difficulty in challenging sinful ways (but you do not give us more than we can withstand, and you always offer a way out [1 Co 10:13]); But ultimately, when we accept Your ways, Lord, and truly turn to You, we know that we will experience “the peaceable fruit of righteousness” rather than the pain and grief of sin (see Heb 12:11). “Help me, Lord-help us-to choose rightly. His story reminds me a bit like Sampson’s. I’ve heard sermons of all his exploits but had never really looked at Judges 13 - the announcement of his birth. Quite beautiful and miraculous. My hope and prayer is that like Sampson, the writer of this song repented and tuned back to Jesus before he died. What a merciful, gracious and loving God we serve

I am and have been so prone to wander and yes, He has and does reach out to me. I grew up with most of the hymns you present, in a Bible church. The Lord did again lead me to a Bible church when we moved. There are hardly any hymns sung there, almost entirely contemporary Christian music. I really, really miss the hymns we sang. I will say, this music praises and instructs, but it all sounds the same, same melody (for lack of a better term) different words, like the worship team is crying! Spending time listening to these sacred hymns is such a gift. (This hymn convicts me, always has, and made me, a continual backslider, weep- none of the contemporary Christian music does that). What a gift, treasure these offerings of songs, lyrics and history are! I am old school and just cannot get into contemporary christian music. There is nothing as powerful as the old classic hymns. The wording and lyrics speak to me as no other!

I remember singing this song as a 10 year old. My aunt , who was only 5 years older than I was, would look at me when we sang "Here, I raise my Ebenezer" and we would both start laughing (not out loud of course) and we spent the rest of the song trying to muffle our laughter and hide our smiles.

I found this hymn just a couple of months ago for the 1st time. I couldnt stop crying!!! Holy Spirit touched me deeply, more deeply than I remember b4. What a Blessing. Imagine coming across this vid! Btw, hymns are my favourite. And, Marcus Munfords quiet version of the song was my first intro to it. Edit... saddened to hear Robinson fell away. Just as well his Fathers eternal arms are forever underneath.
