Come Thou Fount, the real story of Robert Robinson

I found various accounts about the hymn writer's later life, most talking about how he had "left the faith" never to return. A little research turned up a different story.
The biggest problem I had with some accounts was that Robert Robinson "left the faith and never returned." Then there was supposedly the statement he made, "Madam, I am the poor unhappy man who wrote that hymn many years ago, and I would give a thousand worlds, if I had them, to enjoy the feelings I had then." If that were true, all he had to do was to call out to God for forgiveness. The truth is that the Bible teaches that the true believer is sealed until the day of redemption, and what people fail to see is the line after the "prone to wander...prone to leave the God I love," is this line. "Here's my heart, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above." We are not the Author and Finisher of our faith, Jesus Christ is. Robinson understood that.

Thank you so much! I appreciate that you did further research on this. The old stories never set right by me, either. No one can write such a powerful hymn without having been touched by the hand of God. We need to sing this hymn now with today's violent news more than ever. Even so - Come Lord Jesus.

New sub. After not having thought about this song in a while, it came into my mind a day or so ago. I looked it up, played a few versions; one in particular again and again. I wondered about the history of the song and its aurhor. Nearly immediately, this vlog explaining and clarifying the story presented by Dale Little came up on my feed! What a gift! Thank you Dale for doing all the extra research. This is great! Watching and listening to Dale play the guitar and sing the song is a genuine added bonus gift that is so beautifully performed. Thank you Dale. God bless you abd your family.

I'm watching a Steve Brown video on "The tears of Jesus pt 3" and Robert R was brought up about leaving the faith so I had to find out what he had done before I continued the video. Then I ran across your video. I just want to say Thank You for your kind words. Your are correct in saying that Jesus is the finisher of our faith. Trust me I have strayed numerous times but Jesus always calls me back, our works and good deeds are filthy rags, only Jesus, the Fount of our life can ever save us and make us His children. God Bless

For whoever reading this comment I want to share sources through whom Christ talks with me, his name is Finney Samuel, he is a pastor who is available in KZfaq. Do check him out, His sermons will definitely help you to grow more in Christ. Thank you for your preface. Loved your song. However, as an historian on the hymnal I find it so sad nobody sings the original words written by Robert Robertson. A simple search in Wikipedia will give anyone that opportunity. Try it. His words were truly sincere in a personal repentant tone. Wish everyone would sing his version.

Eric Dahlkamp Thank you for your kind and constructive comment. I will look for the original words that you mentioned. I tried to play guitar in my early 20's but finally gave up. I took it up again at age 65. I hope the Lord will give me a few more years to improve with it.

Eric Dahlkamp, until reading your comment, I didn't know this isn't the original version. This has been my most loved hymn. I'm going to Wikipedia now to look up the original version. I've heard other versions of Come Thou Fount, only to find out those were added to or changed by other artists. I also never knew the authors story until now. It's pretty amazing, & I really wish more in my generation & my childrens generation knew these dear hymns. I'm sad to think they are dying out & being replaced by a rock concert. Not that modern worship songs are bad, but a balance of old beloved hymns & newer contemporary worship songs in our churches would be WONDERFUL!

Eric, The original words are beautiful and moving. Have you ever heard Mozart's Requiem in D Minor? IF you have not, find it, with lyrics translated, here on youtube. If the translated version no longer exists, you will find a good translation here: www.sheffieldphil.org/docs/Requiem_translation.pdf There are other, more formal translations, but this one captures the spirit of meaning very well and is understandable for the modern, American reader. Most tend to think of it as a funeral dirge, when, in fact, it is a proclamation of God's majesty, Christ's glory and His redemptive power and work! It could almost be said it is Mozart's version of, "Just As I Am"! Incredibly uplifting! One last thing, in your research, have you ever come across, Marion Snider?

Wow! Thank you! I had never researched Mozart's life. Holly-perverted-wood made a disgusting movie a few years back about Mozart. They portrayed him as a homosexual. As usual, totally out of their depraved imagination. I didn't see the movie but saw promotional clips. I wondered how Mozart raised their ire. I didn't think anyone who could write such beautiful music could have such dark perversion. But now, after reading the translation of his work, I get it: they were DRIVEN to defame, libel and slander a godly man who glorified God. That's how Mozart incurred their wrath.

Eric Dahlkamp, thank you!! I've been looking all over youtube for this song in its ORIGINAL form and it doesn't appear to exist! How _profoundly_ sad. Very happy to find Dale Little's video telling the real background of this hymn and its composer, but political powers and that not -so -great, great imitator promote this version that omits the most important verse. Because, of course, we mustn't "upset" anyone by speaking about S. I. N. or Christ's atoning work on the Cross. *"Oh, that day when freed from sinning* *I shall see Thy lovely face* *Clothed then in the blood washed linen* *How I'll sing Thy wondrous grace* *Come, my Lord, no longer tarry* *Take my ransomed soul away* *Send Thine angles now to carry* *Me to realms of endless day"*

Thank you so much, Mr. Little, for putting this out for my benefit and encouragement. Our Lord directed me to your sharing this morning, now two years after you posted this. Little is much when God is in it. "Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses..." of which I believe alongside Abraham, Moses and Rahab is Robert Robertson, "let us run the race set before us... fixing our eyes on Jesus." and one day soon we will join them. Like in the winter Olympics starting this weekend, thank you Mr. Little for carring the banner of our heavenly home "country" to shine out to those He causes across your path, His path. Keep singing for Jesus! He loves you and your family so very much. Many blessings to you. "Fix our hearts to sing Thy praise."

I have done a lot of other songs on KZfaq which were not all that good, but I put them on primarily so that as I improved, I could go back and compare later. This video was different though. Dale Little, I love this hymn and the melody. I am not a musician, but I do write poems and lyrics. Usually I write the poems or lyrics and look for an old melody to which they can be set. A few years ago I wrote these hymn lyrics which can be sung to the Nettleton melody used for Come Thou Fount and several other hymns. Ezekiel Foretold It Poem or Lyrics by Stephen Pohl Tune: Nettleton - Public Domain Grace flows down from Calvary In sanctifying streams Baptism to last anointing And all blessings in between Ezekiel foretold it And other prophets too The saving flood of grace and blood Could only flow from you Send forth your Holy Spirit To guide us on the way In joy and sorrow strengthen us Lest we should go astray Ezekiel foretold it And other prophets too The saving flood of grace and blood Could only flow from you Temples, altars, sacrifices Priests, prophets, and kings Were only earthly shadows Of your eternal Being Ezekiel foretold it And other prophets too The saving flood of grace and blood Could only flow from you Lord Could only flow from you Ezekiel foretold it And other prophets too The saving flood of grace and blood Could only flow from you

Please be careful . To teach "once saved, always saved" may indeed line up with the promise to true Believers that we are "kept with Christi in God," but for centuries this teaching has caused many to slip into Hell because the implied message is that even future willful sin is forgiven, when Scripture is clear that if we willfully sin after coming to a knowledge of the truth there is no more sacrifice for our sins. We become apostates.
@1947DML
@1947DML 6 жыл бұрын
S B I know this is a very touchy subject, but there are several problems with that premise. I don’t mind the discussion, but would have preferred it elsewhere, but... If you or anyone else want to live your life in that uncertainty, that is your right, but I have been set free from that notion. I could quote a lot of verses, and someone else could find verses that would appear to counter, but I will choose to finish my time here on this earth resting in the same assurance that the Apostle Paul rested in, Philippians 1:6 “Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you WILL perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” Now if you (or anyone else) initiated the salvation experience instead of God initiating it, then I would be very concerned at what point I might lose my salvation. But true salvation is initiated, started, begun by God, therefore He WILL complete it. That gives me immense freedom, not to sin, but immense freedom to immerse myself in His work, because I don’t have to spend time worrying that I may serve my God for 60 years and then end up losing my salvation. As for your statement, if “once saved always saved” does indeed line up with the promise to true Believers that we are kept by Christ in God,” then there is no way it can cause anyone to slip into Hell. Look into some commentaries. The scripture teaches that we are forgiven ALL sin, and if not, we are just as hopeless as we were before we were saved, because I don’t know anyone who gets saved and never willfully commits another sin. I believe God chose His Words carefully and so we need to read them carefully. Hebrews 10:26 is not talking about someone who receives salvation, but rather someone who came to the knowledge of salvation, and outright rejected it to continue in their sinful ways. I appreciate your concern, but no one will go to hell because of what I said. God bless!

S B Jesus Christ will always be our sacrifice-period. After we’ve accepted His gift, His sacrifice for us, it is then up to us to lead a righteous life. Yes,we will still be sinners..till that great day when our Messiah splits the eastern sky, we are sinners. To “intentionally” sin after we’ve accepted Christ, this, in my opinion, will be part of what we give accountability for on Judgement Day. It is our job, after coming to and accepting Jesus Christ, to tell ALL of the grace, mercy, love & forgiveness of Jesus. Not just with our words, but in our actions n thoughts as well(with our mind,we serve the Lord) another thing, we will be judged for....did we share His Gospel? did we love as He loved? Forgive as He forgave? Did we tell everyone about eternal life that can be found thru no other Name; Jesus🙌 Scripture tells us that our sins will be wiped away, forgotten, white as wool only with the blood of Jesus. Our job as Warriors for Jesus Christ is to SPREAD THE GOSPEL! When we sin (not talking deliberately sinning against Him, deceived with the thought, oh well, He will forgive us anyway-the devil is a lie!) when we sin, we are told to repent and live not to repeat that same sin. Hallelujah to the Son of the One True Living God of Israel-Yahweh! Glory glory GLORY!! Sir, your rendition of this song, was respectfully done, thank you!

We are forgiven all sin in Christ...until we stumble or fall. This puts us at odds with our creator...we repent sincerely and are made just...again. through the Word, Prayer and Service we are transformed by the renewing of our minds.

@@Vinnnne A salvation that is only good until the next time we stumble and fall is not worth much. You better hope to whatever other power you have that you don't die before you repent, for then you are without hope. That's not what the Bible teaches. What part of Philippians 1:6 do you have difficulty understanding. I will gladly help if I can.

OK this is my third attempt at making a comment here on the life of one Robert Robertson who wrote Come Thou Fount of every Blessing. I don't think the utube gods like what I have to say...This Utube video has prompted me much lamentation as I ponder my souls tendency to wonder of which utube is a great temptation. The posts here quickly get into the once saved always saved issue... also the truly saved vs not truly saved issue... tough stuff... My stand is Php_1:6 But then what does one do with Heb_6:4-8 and Heb_10:26-30 Also 1Co_6:9-10 Gal_5:19-21 & Eph_5:3-6 and so on. Twice I wrote a lengthy comment on this which was inadvertently lost perhaps at the hand of God! Or perhaps at the hand of the utube gods. www.desiringgod.org/articles/was-he-too-prone-to-wander is the most complete article on Robert Robertson I could find and definitely puts his final outcome in not so good terms. Wandering from true doctrine, connected with the Unitarians Joseph Priestley and William Russell who deny the trinity and deity of Christ and preached his last sermon at Priestley's Unitarian church and then died 3 days later in pastor Russell's home?? A quote by John Newton is troublesome " Six years after Robinson died, the Anglican evangelical John Newton wrote to Robinson’s biographer, saying that he hoped his own spiritual history would terminate where Robinson’s began. He worried that Robinson in his later years was more inclined to help people doubt than believe. And he worried Robinson had been traveling the same road as Joseph Priestley from skepticism to Unitarianism." I believe we serve a holy God and he requires His saints to be holy!! Lev_20:7 Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God. 1Pe_1:15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; 1Pe_1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
