I've had this conversation more times than I'd care to even try to count. Let me preface this by saying that I'm a retired vet....why do I have to say that? Well because I want to make sure that you know that I'm not some young millennial Antifa knucklehead or something. I'm not an activist, I'm not some big political...politician (I don't know what word to use). My point is that I'm an American and I love my country and what it stands for and I care about my fellow citizens. When Collin Kaepernick took a knee during the National Anthem I thought to myself...WTF?...much like many others. Then he explained why he did it. Maybe I was one of the few who bothered to listen to why. And yes I know that my life's experience serving in the military may not be the same as everyone else's, but when one of your own is in danger or in need you don't ignore them....you step up and you help them. In the military by "one of your own" I am referring to a fellow American....unfortunately it seems like "one of your own" in America is restricted by complexion and melatonin levels. Kaepernick is probably a lot like any of us who has had a dream, worked hard and achieved it. There are about 1200 players in the NFL each year (give or take). The average career lasts less than 3 years. We hear about the QB's signing hundred million dollar contracts....for everyone of them there are about 40 guys making just above league minimum whom we will never hear about. To rise to the position that Kaepernick was at the time isn't just about a talent and luck and good timing...it was about a life's work to get to that position. There are only 32 starting QB's in the league and he was in the upper echelon. We've seen players with half his talent hang around for many years. He had everything to lose in terms of his personal wealth, fame, legacy, and he didn't slink away and keep is mouth shut and say "man that's kinda screwed up"....he didn't go out and burn a flag or scream and jump up and down either....he took a knee in peaceful protest in hopes that it would start a conversation about people that had no voice. So when someone yells about how offensive his display was...."on my behalf", I get a little upset about it. Do not speak for me. I do appreciate your concern, but I'm fine...the flag's fine. The problem isn't America, it is that we still can't have an adult conversation because we get uncomfortable and take things too personally. When a cop or any other white person does something wrong I do not rush out to defend them because I have the same skin color. If a politician does something wrong I don't twist myself up into knots to make excuses for them. If there is a problem you fix the problem. If I screw up than please point out the problem and allow me to fix it. Do you know how much stuff gets fixed by ignoring it or making excuses for it? Exactly none of them. If we aren't trying to do things better than we are wasting everyone's time. As for the protests and riots....yeah they piss me off because it's a lot of wasted time and effort, but to be honest when you ignore a problem and refuse to even acknowledge the same damn problems happening over and over and over again....people are going to stop peacefully protesting and they are going to get frustrated and then they start talking about defunding the police. We should have had this conversation years ago. We don't need to be perfect tomorrow, but we need to get better.

20 year USAF retired vet here. Your position is right on target. I could not agree more with every word. Thank you for taking the time to write this up. I wish it was a part of school curriculum. We had to learn to work with people from all walks of life in my 20 year career. This nation will bleed until the ones that aim to divide us are ignored by public that is able to identify the mistakes and outcomes of the past that are re-manifesting today.

@Trump’s A FatAss Just try to remember, it's the past that we should feel pessimistic about. The mistakes were made there, after all. The future? Well, every "next moment" is a blank slate. Decisions are made in the past, actions are taken now, change is always just ahead of you.

Technically it's melanin, not melatonin (that's the stuff that makes you sleepy), but well said. @@finncatwillhelm2457 Well, maybe I just seem like the type the haters want to convert or I just have had really bad luck. I don't think I present my self the wrong way, I think I am pretty honest and clear about my morals and politics: I believe that children, women, and every marginalized person in our country should have equal guaranteed rights in our constitution to what white men have enjoyed in our country since it began. (Remember: poor people in general, people of color, Irish, Scottish, Spanish, etc. were not seen as white. It is somewhat vague to me as to whom the 'white' people were actually. They didn't put that in the history books I got to read in school. I guess I should find out.) Anyway: I believe we have a right to social safety nets that are proven to help and them to be Fully Funded. All of the Social Security programs, SNAP, TANF, JOB CORPS, all of them must be fully funded and add up to fully living wages. Those who are disabled must get more because thier equivalent to living wages is more than those not disabled. Public schools must be renovated. Seriously, and fully funded. College and Vocational schools must be nominal compared to the students income (not the parents) or free through a bachelors degree. Vocational Rehab must also be fully funded. Housing. Yah. What is going(has been going) on is complete BS! People have a right to safe, clean, homes that have plenty of space, all the appliances, central heat and air, room to grow food and dry clothing outside. It must be illegal to own too many homes. Rent must not be increased with out a new contract agreement, people should have representation by the state in eviction cases. Programs must me made that helps more poor and disenfranchised people buy homes. Who can buy homes should also change. None of this owning a whole neighborhood or tens of thousands of them. You should not own more than one home in each state. In your state you live in 50% of the time, no more than 10. This may sound like a lot, it is much less than the rich do now.

@@angelataylor5241Agree 💯. I think the fact that I'm friendly & prob one of the few who stop & give these older people a listening ear is the only reason I can figure that I end up hearing people go on with their Republican antics. I've wondered the same thing, like what would give the vibe that I'm about that?? I think it's wishful thinking. They find themselves in a conversation with someone who seems like they have their head on straight & they hope our eyes will light up when they start their wedge issue talking points. If I don't feel like getting into it, I've just walked away before. Depending on what they say. I love to properly inform & educate, but I value my time & sanity & some are simply too far gone for me. And that's funny you mention the marginalized, because it still baffles me Trump has so much support from the poor, 'white' population. Like Trae said in one of his standups, "Hey rednecks, when did ya'll start liking the police??" Although, they then went just as quickly back to not liking them once the police defended themselves & simply did their job during the Jan 6th insurrection. But anyway, just think it's odd that a rich, military dodging crook could somehow win the hearts of so many southerners. I thought we were typically a lil more suspicious & cautious with who we gave our trust, money, and votes to. Why would they EVER think he had any of their interests at heart?? So strange.

CBC television our national broadcaster has there newsroom and news studio basically across the street from where the eventual riot took place. We watched live coverage in real time. I live about a kilometre from that location wondering whether it might spread into other areas of Vancouver. A good portion of those rioters came in from the suburbs to trash my city. It's been standard operating procedure for the 36 years I've been a resident. Being Canadian, the perpetrators were all sorry, according to their various lawyers during their court appearances.

Ok, I completely agree with the underlying message of what you're saying, so I wanted to get that out of the way first. However, as someone who grew up and went to college in CT and then moved to TX a couple of years later where I've spent most of my adult life, I learned a couple of surprising things about "rioting." First off, I didn't know that people outside of the northeast didn't set fire to trash cans, couches, or cars in response to their team either winning OR loosing. (Weirdly enough, if your team looses the riot is just sort of lame and grumpy. It's the wins that rack up the real property damage.) The next two inspirations for rioting is seasonal "celebration." One is usually somewhere towards the end of April when you don't finally don't need a coat outside, and the other is when northeasters get a little too exited about fall. Hence the pumpkin thing. I went to UConn in the early 2000's, and those years might have been "peak CT riot" years. So every year on the 3rd weekend of April is what we call Spring Weekend, (I've heard that campus has tamped down on this a bit since I went there, but i'm guessing its still a bit more rowdy than you'd expect.) Starting on Friday there are college sanctioned fun time activities during the day like bouncy houses and free hot dogs. Then follow non sanctioned but traditional parties at night. There were usually cops in riot gear hanging out, "just in case." I remember one night walking to one of the parties with a bunch of friends down a path through the woods literally nicknamed "the rape trail," (somehow none of us questioned it back then and I hope to god it's been questioned since,) and there was a cop checking backpacks somewhere in the middle. Of course, everyone's backpack is filled with booze and at least half of us were under age. We all got a little panicked until the cop said, "don't worry, I'm only checking for weapons." That actually happened. The last night of spring weekend would cumulate in a party in the same parking lot every year that came with a dire warning. The penalty for not moving your car would result in said car being flipped and torched. And I mean, it wasn't a secret. This was something that older students would intentionally warn freshman about because it wasn't a prank. But every year there was always one or two cars that never got moved and were found the next morning upside down and charred. Also, I was in college the first time the Men's and Women's basketball teams won the the national championships in the same year. There were burning couches, people in trees and climbing up lamp posts, you name it. To top that off, I was still there the year the Red Sox finally won the series against the Yankee's and officially breaking "the curse." Because CT doesn't have any of its own big cities, people usually claim NYC or Boston as their own. With the Sox/Yankees rivalry nearly being a religion, you will be forced to pick one whether or not you give a damn about baseball. During the series itself, bars on campus banned people from wearing anything Yankees or Soxs related. But the real yearly annual in the northeast is St. Patty's Day in Boston. And no one questions it. Ever. After moving to TX and realizing that no one does that stuff down here and it sounds insane to them, I thought about where it comes from and I've come up with 2 thoughts. One, people are a lot more socially rigid, so when it comes out, it really comes out. Two, being cooped up all winter makes people kind of nutters. But I do think there's one more reason rooted in history. And it's interesting, because older people always complain, but the young white kids up north burning things as a way to celebrate don't speak hypocritically regarding riots that happen for actual reasons. In the northeast, you grow up entrenched in the history of the American Revolution, which of course was kicked off by a property destroying riot. Patriotism in the northeast means, "If you don't like something, change it. Don't give up and get noisy if you have to." The first steps are grassroots movements, peaceful protesting, and voting. But at certain point if nothing's worked, then maybe burn some shit. During the Black Lives Matter protests, I remember having conversations with friends back home that pointed out, "If Black people are being disproportionately killed by police, you could make a rational case for taxation without representation. You could even argue that lighting fire to offending precincts has historical precedence, considering how many times peaceful protesting hasn't worked."

That was incredibly informative and eye opening. As someone from the state of Massachusetts, a lot of that shit made sense. I mean like 20-30% of NE culture is just the American Revolution. We get pissed off when things are wrong and tend to want to do something about that. However it must be done, peacefully or aggressively.

@@philiphockenbury6563 Yeah, it’s really interesting how the definition of Patriotism changes based on a region’s history. In New England, patriotism is still directly tied to the American Revolution. Your civic duty isn’t only voting, but fighting when something is unjust and needs to be changed. There is no “like it or leave.” New England patriotism is about engaging in the never ending pursuit of a more perfect union. The REAL TX actually surprised me. Coming from CT I thought Austin wasn’t “really” TX. But I’ve been here 12 years and learned a lot of things. One was eating a big old slice of humble pie and realizing the way the northeast views and talks about the south really is condescending as shit. The biggest truth in media is the loudest voices get heard, regardless of how many people they represent. And the loud voices from the northeast talk about the south as a bunch of dumb hicks. And it is elitist. It’s hard to feel unified as a single nation when the people you agree with are condescending. We’ve got some uneducated hicks because poverty, but we also have hicks with PHDs because you can’t understand the joy and beauty of kicking up your boots and watching the sunset over fields of wheat and wildflowers, scattered with mesquite and live oaks until you’ve been there. Folks don’t drink “cheap” watery beer cause they don’t know better, it’s cause craft beer’s not meant for 100 degree weather. The south isn’t a monolith either. And the urban rural divide is much more nuanced than what the media makes it seem. TX definitely taught me that. TX has also taught me what gerrymandering and learned helplessness looks like. I’m not going to say TX is “secretly liberal,” but I can say without reserve that our state government does not represent the majority. In fact, many of the things they’ve done over the last 6 years or so are downright NOT Texan. New England may be “Liberty or Die!” But all of TX, red or blue is, “Get the hell off my lawn!” That’s the dream. Have a place of your own to be whoever the hell you are without being bothered. And the very un-Texas rulings designed to control the population and their choices are the death cries of a minority hell bent on holding power by whatever unethical means possible. We’re the closest state to being minority white, and there’s a shit ton of white people who can’t wait for it to happen because of the other white people who are convinced something terrible will happen if more folks are brown. And the shit they keep pulling moves everyone away, (of all demographics,) from the reason Texans love TX so much. Opportunity and freedom. Those ideals don’t have a political party, race or sexual orientation. We need the North to understand the loudmouths don’t even represent a lot of conservatives, and we need understanding and support, not condescension. And it can’t come in the form of red vs blue, liberal vs conservative, or urban vs rural. We need a little bit of that Revolutionary spirit offered to everyone. That people can be empowered and fight for what they actually want. And if we have actual representation and majority rule, it’s probably not going to look like what the North thinks it should look like. But that’s kind of the point. Everyone gets to speak. We’re such a massive and wildly diverse country, the things we have say are going to be different. But people aren’t getting to speak. We need uniform encouragement from the North (without expectation or agenda) to re-define “riot.” The word needs to stop meaning “minorities behaving badly.” It needs to mean, “When Americans aren’t being heard, Americans get to riot. Together.”

@@courtneybrock1 Respect. I too have been forced to learn to not judge people too quickly. Thankfully I learned it as a kid. The great wonder of this nation is that we have all sorts of different people with different dreams. All we need to do is make sure that those dreams are about helping each other out. And if it means torching the block to get people a helping hand, it's not like it isn't in our DNA. Also a fun fact: the harder the trip to get to America, the harder that group works to make it better. We are living in times that will be talked about for ages. and as humanity has progressed it has become easier and easier for people to change the world. And I hope I get to witness it change for the better.

@@courtneybrock1 If some Americans insist on reinstalling a guy who lost an election and feel they’re not getting what they want, that riot is not legitimate, no matter how unheard they feel. Feeling oppressed over something that’s not true isn’t the same as having decades of evidence of real oppression, and of peaceful protest being severely punished, and of finally massing in the streets to demand protection against police violence only to have the police demonstrate just how violent they feel they’re allowed to be against Black people, that’s a time when some property destruction is justified.

I served in combat with the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam during 1968-69. So...I must be a "patriot" and disagree with Trae? First of all, you don't get to call yourself a patriot. When you receive that accolade from a large, DIVERSE group of thinking people...THEN you have earned that title. Calling yourself a "patriot" is patting yourself on the back based solely on ignorance and arrogance. I agree with him 100%. Black people are always being told that they are free to protest but NOT LIKE THAT! This happened over and over during the Civil Rights movement, Olympic athletes black power salute in 1968, Colin Kaepernick in 2016 and all Black Lives Matter protests. The snowflakes who are aghast at the nerve of black people asking for justice, liberty...the American way, have nothing to say and must be universally ignored. Rock on Trae my brother.
