I was never a Pee Wee Herman fan, but I caught a scene of one of his movies where he is rescuing animals from a burning pet store, and he keeps passing by and shuddering at a tank full of snakes. Finally, all the animals are out except the snakes. Then the scene cuts to Pee Wee running out of the pet store with all the snakes gathered up in both hands like two wriggling bunches of straws. He screaming as he carries them to safety. I just LOVED that scene. It kind of gave me a soft spot in my heart for him. RIP

@@KingfishStevens-di9ji Exactly, nobody knows. Definitely a strange guy, but I admittedly didn't miss an episode of Peewee's Playhouse as a kid. That doesn't mean I know anything about what he actually did or didn't do in his personal life. I will say the collecting of all that old erotica is a strange habit, and the jacking off in public (even in an adult theater) is not something most people do. Definite red flags, but there is no proof he ever did anything really bad. My radar is up on him though.

Pee-Wee Herman was Gen X's entire childhood. I don't think the younger generations understand the impact he had on us (and the 80s in general). Hell, so many of his catchphrases like "I know you are but what am I", "That's my name, don't wear it out", "Large Marge sent me", "Then why don't you marry it!?", "Go ahead, scream your head off!", "Why don’t you take a picture? It’ll last longer.”, and "I don’t make monkeys. I just train them.” became part of our vocabularies to this day. My parents couldn't stand Pee Wee, but my siblings and I adored him. RIP Paul Reubens. When you get to the basement of the great Alamo in the sky, we'll let 'em know Large Marge sent you.

Your excuses are so desperate to minimize a celebrity, it's sad. Yes, he was a celebrity with money and fame. Specific charges being dropped does not prove he was a completely innocent man with no guilt. You're clutching at straws to defend the image of this person that you have built up in your mind, based solely on the fact that he was a celebrity who played a significant role in your upbringing. Jimmy Saville was another celebrity predator who had multiple claims and incoming charges dropped by police. Then after his death it was proven beyond any realistic doubt that he was guilty of all the claims regarding him. Him not being brought to justice during his life was due solely to his money and celebrity.

My best friend's brother was a producer on the PeeWee's Playhouse Show. Paul was a perfectionist. He made sure all the out takes from the show were destroyed. He stated in character the entire time while on the set. He was very generous to all he worked with, giving gifts and money. I never saw Playhouse Show as a child's show. As a young adult, I loved to watch it and there was always some sort of adult innuendos. Paul didn't want it to be a child show anyway. He knew his style was meant for adults. I don't think Paul had a thing for kids but a porn addiction. It is rumored that someone got torqued about him and knew about his vintage porn collection. It was used against him. No evidence was ever disclosed to the public. Look to see if you can find anything on it; you can't. He was said to be very nervous about how he was going to be viewed by his peers when he went on stage at the MTV awards. He was received with a resounding applause and then said 'Heard any good jokes lately?' referring to his arrest outside an adult theater earlier that year. The secret word for today is: SAD

Although I agree it was a crime, and his homosexuality is very much against my religion, I too - think that modern-day society - which applauds nakedness in front of children - should be punished, and all parents who applaud those shows - arrested for child abuse. The concept of an adult theater is pretty gross. But even so, I think you are supposed to keep it in your pants for the benefit of other patrons. A similar situation would be a strip club. You can't just whip it out and go to town because you're horny. Besides, this happened in 1991, not 1971. What, he never heard of VHS? He could have jerked to his hearts content in the privacy of his own home. But he didn't want that, he wanted people to look at his PeeWee.

A few vintage nudist magazines in Paul's huge collection of oddball stuff (and a LOT of vintage erotica, yes) packed into multiple storage units are what he was busted over. Those did contain nude photos of children -- but nothing sexual. Inappropriate by today's standards, but not porn. Possibly even something he never actually saw until after the bust, as he was known to buy large lots and just pack them away in storage. If Paul had an addiction it was collecting, not porn. If he'd really had full-on child porn in his possession, there would have been more of it (because that's how pedophiles are -- a few pictures are not enough for them) -- it would have been contemporary -- and video more likely than photos or magazines -- and he never would have been offered the plea deal for the lesser charge. There have NEVER been ANY claims of inappropriate behavior from Paul around children. Ever. Paul may have liked his (ADULT!) porn -- like millions of other people do -- but he wasn't a pedophile and was not attracted to children. And the man just died. Maybe it isn't the time for this judgmental BS? And to head off the inevitable "You sure know a lot about pedos" remarks from some -- yes, I unfortunately do. Having been a licensed foster parent, I had to educate myself about a lot of extremely unpleasant things, and I'm painfully aware of the life-long damage childhood sexual abuse causes. I have no sympathy whatsoever for abusers -- but I also have no patience for non-abusers being falsely labelled.

Thank you for the work you do with foster children. ❤ This is a sad time for the people who grew up with lots of photos being taken of them as kids in the early days of at home photography. Most of the memories are golden and fine by today’s standards… but peppered in there some of the photos could be considered inappropriate to own, let alone share. It’s sad to have your body objectified or seen inappropriately at any age, I hate that the creeps in the world ruin it. The *adult* movie theater arrest was bogus. He harmed no one. EVERYONE knows what happens in those theaters. We've all heard the jokes about the "sticky floors". Seems pretty suspicious to me that on a day that Rubens happened to be there, there was a raid. Bottom line, again, no one was harmed. I personally don't care what people do in those places as long as they don't harm anyone. As for the "child pornography" arrest that came letter. After a judge actually viewed the *art*, it was determined that it was certainly NOT pornographic (i.e., not designed to gratify in a sexual way). These were not covert images of nubile adolescents committing indecent acts. Rather, most of the images were actually displayed in Rubens home. Of course, the prosecutors had to charge *something*, so there was a plea to some sort of misdemeanor charge for possession of "indecent" imagery (VERY subjective). It's all weird. Nowadays, the statue of David is causing Floridian housewives to clutch at their pearls. Rubens wasn't perfect. But, he does not deserve the vilification that some believe is warranted.

Even when I was in elementary school, when PeeWee was at the height if his popularity, I got the creepy perv chills watching him. People who have never experienced abuse are usually blind to it, which is why these people usually get away with their "childlike innocence" schtick. Michael Jackson did the same thing. But its not normal behavior. If you ever meet an adult who acts like a child, even if you know nothing else about them, do not leave them alone with your kids. Word to the wise...

I was the target age for Pee-Wee's Playhouse but only ever rarely watched it as a kid. I found the Pee-Wee voice rather grating. But I DID watch it later as an adult, and I loved it! What has always stuck with me and colored my perception of Paul was my mother's reaction to his adult movie theater arrest. Where I would have expected her to think he was disgusting for watching porn and wanking it in a theater, she was always compassionate and almost defensive of him. She thought he must have been lonely, and as weird as it might seem, he just wanted to be around other people. For years after, if he had a cameo in a show, she would always make comments along the lines of, "Oh good for him! I like him. I'm glad he's getting work." Rest in peace, Paul.

Paul developed dozens of characters while with the groundlings. Pee-wee was the most popular with the audiences so he continued with that. He was visiting his parents in Florida and probably just felt less guilty going to the theater than masturbating in their home. It backfired on him but it doesn’t make him a pervert. The art images I don’t know enough about but am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt because nothing more was found and no one ever came forward to say anything about him being inappropriate around children….and he was around enough of them. Yet, even as a 53 year old man I carry the effects of a childhood full of his and other family members emotional abuse and gaslighting. So, who was the bad influence? I sensed that Paul’s “crimes” were peanuts and overreacted to. He was in an adult movie theatre, not a family matinee. And the things that were found in his home were “70,000 items of kitsch memorabilia, two grainy videotapes, and dozens of photographs that the city attorney's office characterized as a collection of child pornography. But Kelly Bush, Reubens's personal representative at the time, said the description of the items was inaccurate and stated the objects were "Rob Lowe's sex videotape, and a few 30- to 100-year-old kitsch collectible images." I really sense he was weird but not a pedophile, and he is quoted as saying exactly that.

Dr. Grande, I have been a fan of yours since you began making informative videos centered around psychology theory, and I have greatly admired your development as you now make entertaining videos based on humorous analysis of grim pop culture subject matter. Well done in building your brand, and developing yourself as an emtertainer and comedian. This video here has crossed my personal line of acceptable taste and respect. While I enjoy your treatments of making fun with serial killers, narcissist celebrities, and other pulp culture events, this exploitation of a genuinely kind, thoughtful, creative and compassionate soul casts you yourself in a very negative and unsavory light. To focus exclusively on this person being arrested for masterbating in a public place that exists mostly only so that people can masterbate there is cheap and exploitive.. I appreciate your content, but I sincerely hope that the nature of your future videos doesn't amble further down this disrespectful, unenjoyable, and purposeless parh....even though there is a purpose to just about everything.

I know the feeling. I have liked quite a few of the videos he put out, but a bridge too far for me was one he did on the woman who claimed to be indigenous. While she did make a false claim about being a tribal member, he failed to understand that people of Mexican descent are almost always of indigenous ancestry. His research into indigenous American heritage was painfully lacking and I felt it did a disservice to Latin/Hispanic Americans with indigenous ancestry. He relied entirely on the opinions of her sisters as opposed to understanding the cultural implications of Mexican and other Latin American heritages.

I usually appreciate Dr. Grande's opinion although at times he can be a little or overly moralist as is the case here. There are many performers who find success with a character they portray and then due to popularity and income, that character becomes their paycheck, key to their popularity (what performer doesn't want and maintain being in the spotlight) and in some cases they grow to resent that character But that wasn't Pee-wee, Paul continued to fine tune that beloved character and you could sense his passion for Pee-wee, but Pee-wee wasn't Paul Reubens. There are many performers who are completely different from their public persona - Matt Lauer for one. Paul's crimes were victimless and the theater was just being in the wrong place at the wrong time - I assume if that porno theater had no patrons it would not have been there for him to attend that double feature. During that bust there were several others also arrested. Of course they are not dissected since they were probably not famous. I can totally understand the impulse to suggestion to law enforcement, hey I can put on a free performance if we can just forget about this, i don't fault him for that as I don't fault anyone pulled over for a traffic violation and try to get out of it with charm or whatever tactic they deploy to get out of a minor offense. Paul had a lot more to protect, so I don't blame him. Dr Grande comes across as never a fan of Pee-wee and therefore seems to mock and belittle Paul's artistry - in fact, if he reads this I suspect he might laugh at the thought of this being Paul Reubens 'artistry' . Pee-wee's legion of fans feel otherwise. There has never been a report of a minor having been the subject of improper behaviour by Paul so why put so much emphasis on his victimless misdemeanors? As for Peewee - that character started out much more provocative than the toned down playhouse version that followed. He fine tuned that character for the masses...and was never accused of anything improper with a fan of any age. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, why try to make it out to be something more sinister?

PLAYHOUSE OF TERROR?? It seems Dr. Grande has fully embraced the power of a controversial thumbnail!! It feels like he has an axe to grind (and money to make) by putting this out so soon after his death, without much time for research. The character of Pee-Wee was not a “completely untalented individual without any insight, who desperately wanted to be a comedian”, yes he was a naive, quirky man-child but he wasn’t trying to be a comedian, if that is Grande’s opinion of Paul (not Pee-Wee) then he should be honest & state that. Fred Willard was caught in a p*rno theater & no one went after him like this (I understand PR was famous for a kid’s show) but no one said FW had “inappropriate desires”. No rational person expects an actor that plays a character to live life AS that character- he had a life outside of being Pee-Wee, a grown man that made some bad choices- not some creepy pervert. To say that he “had a dark side & was facing demons in his life” is laying it on pretty thick. And Grande judging how Pee-Wee talked shows that he’s not very self-aware, his own cadence is monotone with no inflection, almost robot-like (and he’s not even playing a character). This was no “case analysis” sadly he’s just milking his death for views. - a socially awkward oddball who will never hide behind normal behavior.

The "inappropriate images" were among hundreds of other photographs in a published and bound book and that was a part of his legal defense from the start, not in the aftermath. Now...**grabs pencil**...tell me how many CHOMO images you own...knowingly...that you bought on purpose, that are totally not CHOMO, that no normal people possess in the tens of thousands. Also, his buddy did prison time. He got off light. And guess what...he was targeted correctly by law enforcement. Now I know you like to lie, so let me help you out: "...the boy contacted law enforcement after he was allegedly made to pose for sexually explicit photographs by Jeffrey Jones - another actor who was arrested in the same investigation. Reubens was booked after police said they found evidence of "erotic images" in his art collection in his Hollywood Hills home. Authorities seized the collection, as well as his personal computers, saying they had obtained 30,000 images total. The offending images were found in one book, 25 magazines, and one film. Investigators found two questionable videotapes in Reubens' possession. In response, Reubens' representative told the New York Daily News that one of those videos was a sex tape featuring actor Rob Lowe, an adult. (The video had been taken by Lowe in 1988 and reportedly featured him with two girls, ages 16 and 23.)" Let's remember that the state took pity on Peewee, primarily because he screamed that a CHOMO charge would ruin him (guess what, it did). "Reubens' legal team acknowledged possessing 170 images of minors engaged in sexual conduct." So in short, Peewee Herman did indeed, agree that he was a CHOMO. Though many thought him gay, the gay community said he wasn't. So maybe just a lonely type of "I'm a real loner" guy, who perhaps found sexual release through erotica ( eg more than the normal guy does ). I guess if the images he had had been very sick, he would have gone to prison. But having them was a crime nonetheless, and he did his sentence. Being arrested once at a porno theatre is bad enough. To have it happen to you twice seems to indicate he had a strong desire for that kind of seedy risk. It was thrilling to him in maybe the way going to a strip club is for another guy. Nobody is perfect, but I don't see that what he did meant he was a risk to anyone once his time was served. And I guess which one of us, caught in a jam with the law, with the possibility of lessoning the impact through offering a service with our celebrity would not have tried it on.

I will always remember the big shoe dance, the motorcycles going down like dominoes as well as the . . . Wait. I’ll always remember the . . . ALAMO!! I remember the ALAMO!! I miss Pee Wee.

What's the point of an adult movie theater if you can't take matters in your own hands there? America can be mind boggling sometimes.

Oh, so you are allowed to go into a cinema in Amsterdam, whip it out and splooge all over the seats then? Let's not forget that the Dutch pretty much pioneered the CP industry in the 1970s with Color Climax.

@@jaycee330 Hey Karen, We have Tons of XXX Arcades here in NW Harris Co. And there's a GIANT XXX Store and Multiplex about 2 Miles from me that Bisexual men frequent and often Jerk Each other Off or Gangbang a Woman in with an Open Theater. HPD doesn't Give a Shit. Because they're not supposed to. They're not hurting anybody.

This is a horrendous take on Paul Reubens. Pee-Wee is one of the most beloved characters in entertainment history. Pee We’d Big Adventure is an absolute classic and one of Tim Burton’s masterpieces. Reuben’s was also great in Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Blow. There will never be another Paul Reubens and we don’t care about the theater incident whatsoever. RIP to an icon.
