From Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee, Steve Harvey episode.
comediansincarsgettingcoffee.c...
I like comedy. I like standup.
I hear a lot of comedians now don't do uni / college gigs because no one wants to offend anyone. Because thats terrible.
Me? I try to laugh off any situation. If I didn't I'd of cut my wrists open by now.

This was easily one of the best CICGCs I've seen. I find that a lot of comedians that come on the show are super intimidated by Seinfeld and just can't get a repartee going with him. But Steve has such a larger than life personality and intuitive comedic sensibility that it completely breaks through the contrived nature of the show. Ricky Gervais and Louis CK also were able to do this.

Steve Harvey might be the best guest of CiCGC. He completely grasps the theme, from the way he reacts to the car choice to the discussion of classic comedy. That's not something that can be said about every guest, but the degree to which he engages and his high degree of comedic aptitude is something special. If comedy could be taught, Steve Harvey would be one of the greatest instructors. Two comedy giants here.

What's funny and also sad about this is that they are afraid to say, "I'm not apologizing" but they have no fear of talking about how they should say, "I'm not apologizing" - but they don't come out and say they're afraid, which arguably is all it comes down to. It's even possible they are not afraid for themselves but for all the people whose jobs depend on them who may suffer if they are cancelled. But they don't take a chance, so nothing changes.

There are stand-ups that address this very issue- namely Patrice O'Neal, Bill Burr, and Doug Stanhope. Patrice is passed now, but Burr addresses it on a regular basis, and says almost the exact same thing that they do, about not apologizing (it is just a joke), people getting overly-sensitive, and the industry's reaction. Perhaps these three were/are not famous enough for Jerry or Steve to know of them, but they were/are exactly what these two describe- pure stand-ups without shows/deals to jeopardize, and who say what these two are saying on the issue.

Surely Jerry and other "don't apologize" comics know that the apology comes when comedians are the point people for sponsors. If you're hosting game shows or doing clean network sitcoms, it's not just you. It's the machine. In those roles, the comedian is just the most visible component of the machine. So, beyond that, there are two issues. 1) the comedian's choice to become part of certain machines and 2) an entire society needing to pull the stick out of its ass.

Anyone associating with a person who dances on the line as part of their creative process deserves what they get. The sponsor wants a cheerful presenter. They can do research on their past work. If they don’t, they are fools. They look twice as silly backing away. They bigger the company, the stupider it looks. Better to commit to the direction, the comedian isn’t killing anyone... it’s just a joke.

One person’s tragedy is another persons comedy. I heard that the definition of comedy is a tragedy that is not yours.

Facts. I would even add to that and say some of the best comedy is joking about your own tragedy as well. No topic is off limits in comedy.

Right! Mel Brooks said comedy is when a man slips on a banana peel and falls down an open manhole. And when asked about tragedy he said "when I stub my toe."

Commedians are getting too sensitive if you ask me. The older comedy generation is CONSTANTLY complaining about this. Thankfully, the younger generation of comedy is doing more offensive comedy than Seinfeld and Harvey could ever hope to do. They seem to be having a fine time.

I agree with Jerry here about not apologizing. Having said that, besides the title of the kings of comedy show(not his idea or conception to be clear) I love Steve for his warmth, being genuine and honest.
