@@sumpthintosay6341 I think a lot of black and white people can be tribal in a lot of ways, but comedy transcends that. I've seen the "I'm 'x ' race, but.." from white and black people. Imo, oeople state their race im this contrxt as way of saving a long winded "I'm not the same race/ culture but that comedy spoke a universal language to me, comedy gold ", especially if a show was aimed at a particular race/sex/age demographic. You also see, for example, "Im 15 but I love 50's music". That's the way I see it anyway.

I am a white boy who loves all people. I don't give a damn about color, but if you are funny you are funny. I started watching Sanford and Son when I was 9 years old with my father. it was the first pilot episode and he thought we should watch it. I was hooked and watched it every Friday night at 8 pm like clockwork. It became my favorite show for many years, including re-runs I would watch for many years. I even had my parents buy me Redd Foxx comedy records to listen to. My favorite comedian later became Richard Pryor. Bought his records, saw all his movies, and thought that his joining up with Gene Wilder was the greatest thing since Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. I know that Redd Foxx would be pleased to know that white people did embrace his contribution to the comedy entertainment industry, as I still to this day feel that there were never funnier times than tuning in to Fred G. Sandford doing his imitation of the 4 Ink Spots and going at it with Aunt Esther or his son Lamont.

Probably one of the greatest shows ever produced. Grady, Woodrow, Julio & that goofy white cop ~ They are all ingrained in my memory. I never missed the show because it came on at 3:30, right after school. Don't get me wrong, I watched Good Times and The Jeferson's too, but there was just something about this show that always made me smile. Remember the time Fred had weed growing in the junkyard? Fred told Rollo to wrap it in newspaper and get rid of it. Rollo said, "Yeah, I'm going to wrap it in some paper and get rid of ALL of it." ~ Most of us got the joke and it was brilliant!

He did deserve more than he got. I'm not talking about money. I'm talking about respect and notoriety. The man had talent! @ReturnoftheBrotha Your comment proves you know nothing about Richard Pryor at all. Pryor is the one who told the Blacks in his audience how going to Africa changed his life and made him learn to not to call anyone or identify himself as the N-word. Unlike, these rappers of today. He was the original comedian to cross over and garner the kind of power, wealth, and fame that helped OPEN the doors to your transvestite loving Eddie Murphy who can't even do stand up anymore due to stage fright. Eddie also regrets all the offensive lame jokes about gays back in the day. Now, I like Eddie and his accomplishments, but even he admits that he OWES his entire career to Richard Pryor. Which is why he casted him Harlem Nights. So let's face it, you're dead wrong and sound pathetic in your reasoning for dis-liking him or not giving him his credit. I mean, if you don't like his brand, fine. But you haven't got a leg to stand on when trying to come up for reasons why you don't like him nor when it comes to comparing him to those that came after. All in all, you're in the minority with your ill informed opinions.

Redd Foxx was a comic genius & a legend. You’re absolutely right, there was an incredible lack of equality at that time. He couldn’t get the same star treatment as others in similar series. He deserved so much more, so did Demond Wilson LaWanda Page & many others. I grew up with them & they hold a warm place in my memories of my youth. My family lives in a poor area with many junk yards, body shops mechanic places & trailer parks...and I know that type of community depicted on the show. I'm a 57yo white Canadian guy. I was 9yo when S&S came on the air and I was blown away. I never laughed so hard in my life. I followed the show until it ended and then for many years in syndication. My wife is 6 years younger than me so she didn't watch it when it originally aired and her parents didn't let her watch it later. Just a couple of years ago, I bought her the DVD set of the series for her birthday. She had never seen the show and looked at the package with a look like "what the heck is this?". I told her "just watch it". She just laughed and laughed and stayed up all night long watching it. She watched it for days, then weeks, every single day whenever she had time, over and over. She said "I can't believe I never saw this and how funny it is." I always loved the show and Redd Foxx has always been special in my heart.

He was exactly right that young kids of all backgrounds needed to know the history of people of all nationalities and ethnicities, and especially the significant, and many times critical, contributions, efforts, accomplishments, and sacrifices, of populations of people termed "minorities." People need to understand that the history of any people, of this country, or the history of any country, and really, the history of the world, is a shared history. No one group of people has ever existed in the absolute absence of any or all other groups of people, and no group people has ever existed, prospered, or faltered, without the influences and contributions, positive and/or negative, Too many people are brought up with an almost harmful lack of knowledge, an absurdly incomplete, and way too often inaccurate, and biased, picture of the history of the world, or any part of it.

That was sad how the entertainment industry treated Red Foxx. I loved watching him and the whole cast of Sanford and son. I loved when he played in the movie Harlem nights. He had my stomach hurt laughing along with a star studded cast of actors that I believe paved he way for black actors of today and left a blue print for them. May he be at peace in the spirit life and those who passed from a great era of great black movies of the 80's decade. I miss hearing his one of a kind voice and Sense of humor whitty come backs and that smile that everyone loved to see. My deepest condolences to every relative and in-law of the late great Red Foxx. May you rest in paradise in peace always. A legend and icon we love and miss dearly.

Tony, you're so correct. Fred Sanford was homophobic and he was not big on Puerto Ricans nor white people.....which is racist. The difference is, Redd made it so hilarious. Only Redd Foxx could play such a roll and make it funny. Not only that, but We were still in the midst of the civil rights movement when the show began airing, which made it even edgier. Again tho, Redd played the role so well and made something so ridiculous(racism & bigotry) the joke that it is. Redd was a comedic genius.
