Redd doesn't get enough praise for his stand up or albums either, He's on my mount Rushmore of all time comedians considering he inspired both Pryor and Murphy, who are on it too.

Irene Ryan did much the same when cast to play Granny on The Beverly Hillbillies. On the show Granny was Jeb Clampett's mother in law, where in real life Irene was only 6 years older than Buddy Ebsen.

@@diverguy3556 I swear what you just described there is the difference between American comedy as a whole in British comedy. The reason the office here is completely different than the office in the UK. Comedy as a whole is universal but certain kinds of comedy tends to be subjective.

@@diverguy3556 I doubt that you ever watched Sanford & Son if you claim it was unfunny. One of the reasons Norman Lear had trouble selling the program to CBS is because the executives at CBS watched videos of Steptoe & Son and they thought the writing, production and scripts were subpar and above all, unfunny. Lear had to add comedy writers to punch up the scripts and main writers to add layers of depth to the characters and plots.

Ever since I heard the background of what was going on and essentially caused the collapse of Sanford and son it's hard to watch it the same way. It's really sad that neither of the actors could really go on to anything successful afterward which is I think the saddest detail of all. Redd was the closest and of course right as he was getting something successful again be up in pulls a Fred Sanford for real.

And the other one thinking the exact same thing. That kind of felt like where things were headed actually as depressing as it may be. The true logical, inevitable conclusion. Also I kinda love darkly comedic endings.

Those kind of details really do change the entire situation because you have one person living a normal life and one person that basically has to hide everything they do from the public. Context is always key and it's the thing missing until you hear something like that.

Yeah I didn't remember but they even got away with the n-word a few times which watching it now on Prime kind of shocked me a little bit for the time it was on.

A lot of these self-righteous younger people complain and call this show racist, I actually had one try to tell me several years ago that it was canceled for that reason, the fact is it addressed racism at times but it wasn't racist. The Some of these kids nowadays see racism in their soup.

The scene in the court house was jaw dropping and today would have been canceled the words were an expression and reflection of what truly was felt by the Black community back in those days.words that were needed to be told out loud although in comedy form the message was clear and cut throat.

@@gutenbird It was apparently a story told to I can't remember his name one of the members of mad TV when he was really going through a serious period of addiction. Quincy may be a legend but yeah he's got a big head it doesn't surprise me. Most people at that point have a hell of a lot of ego and it does make them a bit insufferable. Still though that theme song is an absolute classic. It's funny I remember them using it in that Hitchcock movie with Will Smith and I was like is that the tune to Sanford and son?! and yes yes it was.

There's no way to compare. American and British humour is completely different. We find American comedy a bit obvious and machine gun gag delivery, exhausting!

@@JoJoJoker I love that it even got a reference in The Beatles: Get Back, when John asks Paul "who's the little old man" referring to George's Hare Krishna friend, and Paul replies "he's very clean". And then a few months later, a "dirty old man" reference would make its way into the song "Mean Mr. Mustard"

Right? Plus it gives this undercurrent to watching the show, you can tell these are performers who know each other. They have that Vivian Vance / William Frawley energy (and those two did NOT get along, but it's the same chemistry). Same with Grady and that big dude with the moustache, all Redd Foxx's friends.. the nepotism actually contributed to the unique feel of the show since they were not exactly the most telegenic and probably wouldn't have been cast otherwise, but that's exactly the kind of people Sanford would live near.

It's a little bit astonishing to know just how many shows were originally British before being adapted for American audiences. Of course plenty of shows attempted it and failed miserably. Even shows that were highly popular over there just couldn't translate or translate well. Sometimes they would try to adapt our shows over there with equally terrible results.

I've seen the actor who plays Lamont in interviews and he seemed to be a miserable kind of person. It really turned me off. I'll read more about the behind the scenes. That has me curious and does make sense about how he might have turned out the way he is now.

@@cchavezjr7 The problem with a show when it really becomes popular and takes off is people's egos really start to show their ugly side. You see people expecting more money or more money than this person gets and it just gets super ugly fast. It's a story that I guarantee has gone on behind the scenes of countless shows and it does kind of sour you to the show a bit when you find out.

Yep it's ironic. We always talk about these shows being stepping stones but I have to say the shows then and the shows now couldn't be more different and I don't mean that in a good way. What they were able to talk about under the guise of comedy it is still to this day unheard of especially for Network shows. Things are way more sanitized and way more careful than these old shows that would just let it hang out and keep it real. It's a strange legacy but an important one.

Isn't it just tragic that comedy is supposed to be used as both a balm for societal pains and a lightning rod for calling out wrongs ..... Yet nowadays people wanna sanitize and censor comedy? Feels like Chappelle's Show was the last time comedy was used in such a way.

heh I mean it's never left the rerun circuit, but along with other 70s Lear shows, it's prettty heavily censored. Real shame, a perfect example of how little those people really care about anyone.

The problem is studios and networks try to do "safe stuff" as in safe hedged bets on stuff they hope will be successful based on previous success as opposed to new stuff that's risky and untested.

@@KairuHakubi Absolutely, nothing ventured nothing gained as they say. I'm not saying I don't understand the thought process of course I do but the bigger the risk the bigger possible reward when something really hits and makes it big. But these studios and networks are just completely risk adverse they just don't want to put their neck out there and possibly make a huge mistake. It really is a shame because that's how you have truly groundbreaking moments but I feel like we haven't had one of those in a long long time.

Yeah, I agree with that. Albert was frightened of being left on his own and manipulated Harold to stay with him. While Harold wanted to be be his own man and do his own thing but, although he tried to break away many times, felt an obligation to not abandon his dad.

It was ground breaking at the time in both categories. Working class comedies then were shallow and patronising "oo err missus, don't ya know?" rubbish like On the Busses which portrayed the working class as little more than a running gag for middle class folk to snigger at and feel superior, that stereotyped people as happily living in low quality housing with barely a brass farthing to rub together that were "incapable" of thinking past base instincts. S&S blew that concept apart by having the 2 characters existing in 2 places of experience, the young man hopeful and full of aspiration and the old man who knows that those hopes will never be realised, Albert has learnt over the years that aspiration is pointless because one way or another you will end up "put in your place" whatever you do and however hard you work. Drama was little better, if you look at movies back then the working class characters would be criminals and vagabonds, or soldiers, always squaddies of course never officers and almost always chirpy chappies or wrong 'uns that are not to be trusted.

Steptoe and Son was certainly darker. The same was true of 'Til Death Us Do Part. When they became Sanford and Son and All In The Family they had to become their own thing for American audiences but both kept that kernel of despair.

I mean I know it's a dead horse that's been beaten to death at this point but you really can't make shows like this anymore. Shows like this and All in the family we're just too real and raw which is a weird thing to say about a show as old as this and yet here we are.

@@JohnDoe-wq5eu i think the main reason behind not being able to make them like they used to is the studios. the current sitcom formula was set into stone decades ago, and the studios will not risk going too far outside of the formula. there's too much risk for failure. failure is money lost, while a middling show will give a middling return on investment. but making sure money is the name of the game, thus no risks are ever taken. it's the same in movies, and video games.... all forms of entertainment, really. the mega-corperations that are the studios at the top just pump out bland, homogenized garbage because taking any risks means possibly not turning a profit.

@@rakninja I think the saddest thing is the greatest hope to break out of that was the streaming services and as much as they kinda are/did and still could I feel like they too are trying to hard to "be safe". I do feel like that is the place we have the most likely chance of seeing something truly original. Network TV as we've known it and still know it is pretty much a lost cause. Even cable has pretty much gotten very safe which is a real let down. And unfortunately even services like HBO tend to cater to certain demographics more than others. But yeah they do the safe stuff and as long as they're not willing to take chances we're going to have the same homogenized crap we've had for the longest time now.

The "Amos and Andy" TV show was an early successful comedy opportunity for blacks & was huge even before "I Love Lucy". It innovated many of now familiar sitcom techniques. Because in the 1960's, there was a big push to erase and relaunch black culture in America, it was rarely, if at all shown in reruns in the 70's onward, so is largely forgotten. I think, that it's sometimes now featured on some over the air TV stations in America.
