Actor, comedian, singer, guitar player, Roy had it all covered and had it covered well.

Roy always had a goofy, self-deprecating sense of humor. Either you like it, or you don't. Inherent in that is a great self-awareness of his own abilities. Anyone who questions his talent, check out his sessions with Jazz legend Joe Pass. Roy could play anything, with anyone! The fact that he liked to have fun while doing it just adds to his legend.

I remember as a kid, seeing him on Hee-Haw. I thought all he was about was being just another hillbilly guitar picker. I regret that. As I've grown older I've learned to be amazed by his incredible talent at playing the guitar. Both he and Glen Campbell have become legends to me.

Ya know...when I was 19 I thought I knew shit. I was a bit of a snob about music, really. By then I’d seen The Stones, Zep, Van Halen, RUSH and every other major rock act of that time. So, a buddy of mine who worked with me at a restaurant says he’s got a couple of tickets he can’t use for Roy Clark. Very near front row center at the Albuquerque Convention Center and would I like em’? I says let’s go so we can clown these country bumpkins and make fun of Roy. So, we go in half drunk and talking smack about hayseeds and shit kicking and the lights go down and Doc and Merle, who opened the show, are led out and they sit down and......holy crap!!! 😳 Now I’m in shock at the unbelievably intense guitar playing I had just witnessed when the lights go down again and the backing band kicks it and under a white hot spotlight Roy strolls out and picks up his Guild and the next thing I know it’s over and he’s gone. I mean....he was so good and so funny and so heartfelt that I COMPLETELY lost track of time. His picking, strumming, leads and meter were absolutely spot on the one. And the highlight of the night was when he pulled out this $1,000 Ovation and sang a song for his mom who had just passed and tears welled up in my eyes. I swear, Roy Clark was one of the greatest entertainers I ever had the privilege to see live. He was an artist like no other. He was humorous and tough as steel. Fast fingers and smooth voice. Fair thee well, Roy...and know I will NEVER forget you! Nuff said! 👍🔥

I remember watching Roy on Hee Haw and seeing him on the Tonight Show one time that he finished a song with a broken string and never even mentioned it had broken until the end. But this old black and white stuff goes back to before I was old enough to know what the hell was going on.

I’m a pilot for a major airline. Back in the early regional airline days, I brought Roy into Minneapolis to connect to Phoenix where he had a gig coming up. He loved airplanes and was a very accomplished pilot in his own right. He invited me to sit with him in the gate area before his flight and we talked airplanes for 45 minutes. I never once mentioned I, “played” guitar (not a total fool, y’know!). He said, “I’m surprised a young fella like you would even know my name.” I told him that having been raised in Alabama, I was put down in front of the TV to see every episode of, “Hee Haw” that ever aired and that I knew his name before I knew all my relatives’ names! He gave me his autograph for my favorite uncle who idolized him, shook my hand, said, “nice landing back there!”, and we parted company. Class act all the way.

you know honestly, a lot of people say this isnt Roy at his best. but id say it is, a musical comic, this is him doing what he does best. even if he doesnt demonstrate the best of his guitar skills here, this is certainly him in his true element
