I used to be a driver for Pizza Hut a few years ago and one night when I was getting off of work at around 2 AM I saw 2 people walking up the road who looked exhausted so I offered them a ride. We live in a rural area and I always try to be a good samaritan and help people when I can, it has taught me a lot about the common misconceptions people hold onto about life and although there are reasons to be reserved it does not mean you should shun away from every moment presented to you to help another human being... Anyway, I usually would give the homeless people in the area our left over pizzas and food that was never picked up that we would have ultimately either thrown away or divided aongst the crew but most of my team members were in agreement that we could serve our community better by feeding people and I would happily do the rounds every night. Well, I didn't have any food to hand out this night so when I was driving home and saw these two people walking, I think I felt compelled to give them a ride to make up for the fact I wasn't able to do my usual rounds of handing out food, plus they seemed like they were not too well off and could use the assistance... On my way to dropping them off to where they lived which ended up being miles, they probably wouldn't have made it back til after sunrise if I had left them there on the side of the ride to keep walking... Anyway, I stopped for gas before taking them all the way to their destination and offered to get them something from inside, they said they had food stamps and that they were thankful for the ride and that I had already done enough for them. I grabbed myself a hot coffee and a snickers, paid for my gas.. I noticed they walked out of the gas station without paying for anything but didn't have anything in their hands either so I assumed they just didn't see anything they wanted or maybe the gas station was a bit too pricey for them.. Turns out I was wrong, as soon as I get back to my car and finish pumping. I can hear the sounds of chips opening, candy wrappers tearing, etc. I don't make a huge deal out of it but I say that I had offered to pay for it all for them and they said their whole spiel with they can write that stuff off and it doesn't hurt them at all to feed a couple of kids... Which they were grown adults and I was well aware that there was a family who owned that store chain and that was directly taking out of their pocket or if not the family who owned the store the employee who ultimately didn't stop the theft or catch on to it which may have even cost them their job if it hadn't been for the fact that I returned later... I was even more upset at the fact that after I dropped them off, they left all the candy wrappers and trash in the back seat of my car. Go figure, right? This actually became a positive and I was later happy for the first time ever that somebody had left their trash in my car, I was heading home and noticed the gas station we had gone to where the two people had just stolen goods from. I pulled up, I walked inside and I said to the clerk, "Hey man, I apologize for earlier. I was giving those two people a ride home after I clocked off of work and I offerered to buy them something if they wanted but they decided to steal anyway. I don't condone that type of thing and if I had known that was going on I would have not allowed it to happen but unfortunately by the time I found out I was in my car driving away. I grabbed all the trash that they conveniently left in my back seat, I don't know if this is everything that they stole but I would actually like to purchase everything that was taken from this store because I feel partly responsible for what happened considering I brought them here. " he was so shocked that he thought he was getting pranked or filmed and I told him that this was legitimately a really bizarre situation and that I couldn't leave without paying for their actions and that I wouldn't feel right if he didn't right everything up that I had brought back into the store. He did as I asked, he told me that he couldn't believe that I actually came back to pay for their stuff and that he thought I was just their cover for the whole thing. I told him that I figured I was being implicated as well and that is not who I am or what I represent and that in such a small town like this, it would be awful for me to suffer a bad reputation all because I tried to help some people. Even if it was a city I would have done the same thing but that was besides the point. The next day he told the owners and when I went back for gas that night they offered me a job and said that they were completely amazed and grateful for my honesty. I turned down the job offer and kept delivering pizzas for a while longer.. Anyway, I don't regret giving those people a ride. They may have broken the law, they may have caused me some extra frustration, yes. However, they got to have one shred of decency and kindness directed at them that hopefully at any moment in time could be one more reason they decide to change or maybe they reflect on that night and they have some program they are in/siutation happen to them that reminds them that life is not over yet and it is never too late to change. I used to be just like them and I grew up rebelling against the world because my family lost everything when I was 14 and we left with the clothes on our backs. I was so angry that I thought the world had to pay for what had happened to me. It took years to shed that feeling and develop compassion, understanding, forgiveness, and no I am not a real religious... I just found my way and realized what it means to be a decent human being and I try my best to maintain and follow that path no matter the situation, who it is, or what is happening. I will always follow my heart and choose what I know is right and so far it has been a tribute to so many positive and great experiences in my life. Even though a few unfortunate events have happened, I would never change this frame of mind and I will always continue to appreciate my decisions for doing so and never will I regret this continuation of random acts of kindness. I hope somebody out there reading this may gain some insight or a change of heart in themselves that helps them to think in this way as well and do thins for their community, neighbors, fellow men and woman who need their assistance. All we have is each other in the end folks, don't ever forget that.
