@@bettyir4302 I was so blessed to learn to cook that way from both of my Grandmas & my Momma! My grandma was ftom west tenn around belles tenn. She only went to 3 rd grade. My grandpa was from russelville: dardanelle Arkansas. He went to 8 th grsde. They owned a grocery store, and my grandma was a great cook. Her cherry pie filling was canned under the Thank You brand pie filling- my uncle worked for Michigan fruit canneries in Benton Harbor Michigan and he was a cook when they started their pie filling. She also cooked for President Truman when he came to Caruthersville Mo on a campaign stop and stayed with a federal judge there. My grandma was his housekeeper and cook. So she got to cook for President Truman. He offered her a job cooking in the White House as his personal chef. She refused because she was raising her family and they owned a grocery store in Caruthersville Missouri. But she was a fantastic cook. I always had a huge garden, so made all of her own clothes, and sold Avon. She did all of her route for Avon on foot. She did not drive a car. She was crown queen of Avon one year because she had the most sales in her district. She only had a third grade education, but she was so very smart. her mother was full blood Cherokee Indian and her father was full blood Irish. Her mothers maiden name was Dulin, and her uncle, her mother‘s brother, was the leader of the Dulin gang, who robbed banks.

Lester Laminack's "Saturdays and Tea cakes" was my first encounter of someone agreeing with my families spelling of Mammaw. I was blessed to attend sessions lead by Lester at a reading and writing conference. 💖 I'm a Mammaw of two young boys. I love cooking with the oldest one. I introduced him to yeast bread a couple of weeks ago. I also use half salad dressing and half mayo in macaroni and potato salads. Mom always used chopped bread and butter pickles and a little pickle juice. I find the Aldi store brand bread and butter pickles taste close to Mom's home canned bread and butter pickles. 😋

I often think of my grandmother she always made & canned Sandhill Plum Butter. When she opened a jar she would have it in a refrigerator glass dish with a glass lid. I am said that she passed in 1974 & nobody has her recipe for making the Sandhill plum butter. At meal time she would always set it on the table for us to put on our bread to have our meal. Then 10 days after she passed my grandfather passed with a broken heart . The doctor said nothing was wrong with him but a broken heart.
