I was 12 when our elderly neighbors bought a brand new 71 I remember the smell but more than anything I remember the luxury of it. I’d never seen anything like it, everything was power, windows,seats ,locks . The first am/fm stereo in a car for me. And I jumped at every opportunity to go for a ride! Wondrous age to be and a great period for cars. Would love to re live again…

Such a beautiful car. My family always had big cars like this when I was growing up and new cars can’t replicate this kind of soft and luxurious ride. Those seats, wow. This is when cars were cars. I’d take one of these any day over a new plastic piece of garbage.

As a lifelong FoMoCo guy I like the rumble of those engines...lol. I have owned mostly Mercury products in my 60 years but never one this big, what a yacht, beautiful machine. 429 is an outstanding engine.

Truly, the "blue" hour is the magic time to take your classic mid-century car out for a spin. If there is ever a time you feel like you are "back in the day", it is now. It's almost like a time portal, especially with some old tunes playing quietly on the 8-track player. Thank you for sharing this moment.

1971 is late century.
@ofp8574
@ofp8574 8 ай бұрын
1971 is 29 years before 2000 and 21 years after 1950, so the argument could made that it is closer to the middle of the century than the end, but if you break it up into thirds, 1933-1967 would be mid century. Cars are not really well categorized into what part of the century they came from, considering this has more in common with a mid century car, like a late sixties Lincoln, than it does with a late century car, such as a Mercury Topaz. I usually consider 1965-1972 Fords as "pre-upsize," 73-78/9 as "upsize," and of course, the downsize Fords. The years vary, but that classification fits the big three for the most part. A better term for the first of those eras, however, is surely needed.

Adam, of all your cars, at least the ones I’ve seen, this is my hands-down favorite. So much more elegant than anything being produced today with their weird origami body lines and huge, ungainly grilles (e.g., Lexus). If someone gave me a choice of either this or any new vehicle available today, it would be this one. I am so envious! You must lead a charmed life to end up with cream puffs like this.

@@ianclaudio777 US cars were built for audios high millage motoring across a huge range of climate and terrain. GM has always had a reputation for tough reliability. Of course one of the most popular car makes in the UK in the 70s was Ford too, though our locally built Ford's were much smaller and lighter than anything in the US.

I was 6 when my mother bought a 1971 Marquis Brougham like this -- metallic blue with black vinyl top. the engine roared like a lion when you floored it, and the sound of the door as you closed it. It was smooth yet steely as a Sherman tank. You could walk all over this car and not put a dent on the hood or the trunk. Loved riding it at night with the windows down and that pillarless view out the window. Magnificent American car quality of years long gone.

Beautiful car. My dad bought one used in 1976 when we were living overseas. We flew into California to start our annual U.S. vacation and my dad went shopping and found a Maroon colored one just like this one a day or two after we arrived in LA. He picked it up pretty cheap, low miles and like new condition. We drove it all over and sold it in Texas 3 or 4 weeks later when we had to go back overseas. I remember riding in that car, so quite, so smooth and powerful. I also think it was built with quality that might have been at or reaching its peek. My dad was a huge Lincoln-Mercury fan and would own several Marks III, Mark IV and Mark V Continentals and Town cars but finally switched (back to Cadillac) after horrible problems with his 81 Continental.

My Dad bought one of those in the summer of 1971-a Marquis Brougham-brand new-for $3921.00-the sticker was well into the $7K range & he got the dealer down that far-I know -I was there ! I was almost 10 so I remember it vividly ! What a land yacht it was-light tan color-almost a yellow-chocolate brown vinyl roof & interior with the Twin Comfort lounge seats. Ours had the auto temp A/C-AM/FM Stereo, cruise control, tilt wheel,-power EVERYTHING-windows, driver's seat, doors-which were vacuum powered-FoMoCo loved vacuum power ! We took it on several roaders up to San Francisco & points north from San Diego-what a cruiser. Comfort & absolute dead QUIET. It too had the 429-2V -2 barrel carb & it got 10-12 MPG whether in town or on the road. The 1st. oil crisis in Oct. 73 hastened it's departure from our family-I still have a warm fuzzy for it-thanks for the memories !

I owned this very car only in blue. It was a gift to me for college in 1979 for my grandfather. And you’re right that 429 two barrel carburetor worked just fine. You could put your foot in it and you would burn the tires off the back in. As far as the smoothness of the ride it was second to none I remember a friend of mine the very first time we got together he was taking me to his home to see about me sharing it and we went up this terrible road and unbeknownst to me there was a set of railroad ties and he suddenly screamed so down and I said what are you talking about? We went over those railroad tracks and I didn’t even know they were there and he looked at me and said I don’t believe this car. Many great trips were taken in the car. I literally drove the wheels off of it. Too bad we’re so stupid when we’re young. Thank you for posting this brought back a lot of good memories

When I watched this last night it made me remember as a kid how big and ugly this car was to me at that time. I didn't see many but a couple of them were around in my GM town. My Mom got a 1972 MMB in 1974 when I was in second grade. It was also green, but lighter with gold metallic. It was called “gold-green.” It really was beautiful. Seeing the interior of this one takes me back. I’m sure it’s identical except ours had the full split bench. She got several cadillacs in the 80’s-90’s, but kept this one until 1986. My sister hated it. She called it “The Green Machine.”
