Comfrey is one of the most powerful natural remedies known. It has been shown in peer-reviewed, scientific journals to be beneficial in arthritis, back pain, sprained ankles etc. People have even found benefit to old bone injuries and even frost bite neuropathy. We had a friend write us yesterday who tried it this week on a rotator cuff injury and within one day was feeling better. Have you ever tried it out personally?

@Health and Homestead, can you cite the research papers that suggested these warnings. Especially the -Don’t use more than 4-6 weeks total in a year and -no more than 10 days at a time. The suggestions seem crucial concerning health reasons and I’m concerned if it is linked with liver issues. Are the properties of comfrey transdermal and collective? Please if you can, cite the research so I can look up the information.

Thanks so much for this video & for sharing your recipe! I've just started learning about Comfrey & how wonderful it is for chickens (leaves) AND for the soil. I guess it has quite a taproot & brings up lots of nitrogen for other nearby plants to benefit from. God's creation is AMAZING!

I was wondering what the Nitrogen Phosphorus and Potassium values were. I found this... " The NPK (nitrogen-phosporous-potassium) breakdown of comfrey leaves is 1.80-0.50-5.30 for true comfrey and that last number bumps up to 7.09 for Russian comfrey. " That means that Comfrey is a natural source of Potassium which is known to help with blossoms and fruits. I thought that was interesting so I thought I'd share :)

My family had a homestead in Holland MI in the name Garret John Boone for over 100 years, believe it's in the National Registery. Back in the day, before the auto, people transported by foot or horse and wagon. When I was talking to my Great Aunt decades ago about the amazing flower garden which was started decades before she was born for growing medicinals and herbs for the farm. She told me that when working farm animals died they were buried there as were many scraps from meal prep and comfrey tea and leaves were used often. Often wonder if it is still there.

I was pounding a ground rod in the other day and missed the rod, slamming the post pounder onto my big toe. I don't believe it was broken, but it sure was smashed! I put on a comfrey salve (made from a recipe just like this) and even though the expected horrific bruise came out, by the second day most of the pain was gone and the bruising is going away fast.

I was in an auto accident a couple of years ago breaking both my legs and my dominant arm. I had pain while visiting my daughter in my legs and as I was in another state pain meds/ insurance/ MD orders were major hindrance to say the least! My daughter had the comfrey plants in backyard! I harvested the leaves, put them in a bag, beat them and once pulverized I grabbed the saran wrap and put the poultice on my legs and wrapped my leg covering the poultice with the saran wrap. Worked so well I brought 3 plants back to my state and this year I am pleased to say the comfrey is growing well. This year I plan on making salve! The poultice wrap works wonders better than any OTC med that is for sure! Should have listened to those farmers earlier!

This is the only video I've found that actually uses the comfrey powder in the salve, instead of infused oil. I will be making this one! Thank you.

Im going to try all methods to see what works best…oil infused comfrey, comfrey tincture, or powdered comfrey when making my salves…so far I have tried the quick 2 day method to infuse dried comfrey and the method where you infuse the dried leaves in oil for 6 weeks in a dark cool place. I did not notice a difference between the 2…both are great! Btw, I had an 8 inch scar on my abdomen from several surgeries where they used the same scar site. It was scaly and sore, and would not heal for several years. I started putting comfrey salve on the scar about 5 months ago…I now have a 2 inch section with a little bit of scaly skin left…the rest has healed and softened. It truly is wonderful…now I am not embarassed about my abdomen anymore!

It is so important to remember that 4 weeks a year is the high-end recommended time for use of any comfy product. Whether it's for consecutive weeks or 4 weeks broken up. Cool! I’ve heard of comfrey since I started learning about country living. The salve looks so pretty. We usually use arnica but lately both my parents have been complaining about shoulder pain so maybe this might help. Thanks for sharing the recipe! This comfrey is an infertile variety. Either buy a tiny plant or beg a bit of root from someone..it grows easily but doesn't spread unless you propagate it 👍

Comfrey propagation: Years ago I had a comfrey plant for medicinal purposes. My dad ran over it with a roto-tiller to clear that land area. I was so mad. Until Next year I saw that it turned into around a dozen comfrey plants. 😀 It's called root division. ;-)

The negative things are not to use it on puncture wounds, deep cuts, etc e cause the healing is so fast it will heal over debris and cause an abscess. Some research will scare you from using it internally from the alkaloids that are in it. It is used topically safely and is used in thousands of patents for creams and salves under different names.

I've been making a comfrey/plantain salve for many years and although our 6 children are all grown up, it's still called "Mom's magic salve." Now, I do it a little differently. I gather roughly half and half comfrey and plantain leaves, chop them up fine in a food processor, cover the chopped leaves with olive oil and I put them on low heat in the oven until the water is evaporated. I have a formula for how much beeswax to use per cup of prepared oil. I know it cured my neighbor's sun poisoning rash, it is wonderful for small wounds and diaper rash. It helps things heal quickly. Another young friend used it to help heal a broken bone she had years ago. I am intrigued by the idea of drying the leaves and making it the way you do. Thank you for this! Oh, and I also make, and freeze, comfrey poultices to use for sprains and bruises. The salve is great for bruises, too.

Years ago I was working as a stable hand and had a one ton draft horse step on my foot - it took a couple of minutes to move him off - I limped home and put some mashed frozen comfrey on the purple swelling foot the rest of the day (we kept frozen comfrey mush in the freezer). The next day, the swelling was down, almost no bruising, and I was back at work - the stable owner was astonished as he expected me to be out for weeks. Hooray for comfrey. I've never made salve with the powder - I'll have to try it. My usual salve has comfrey, cleavers, calendula.

Back in 1978 we were living on a mountain six miles from the nearest school bus stop, so were home teaching our kids except for twice a week when we took them down because we felt it was important that they get some ‘socialization.’ Picked them up from school one Thursday and the six year old had a scrape on her wrist, didn’t think anything of it (this was before we knew that schools didn’t do anything with cuts or scrapes). Touched her on Sunday and she screamed, looked at her wrist and she had a red line going from the scrape to a sack under her arm. Didn’t have a phone so went down the hill to a neighbor who had one, called the local ‘hippy doctor’ (only doc in the area). He said to put comfrey on it and bring her in in the morning. I had no idea what comfrey was, but the neighbor grew it for his rabbits and gave me several leaves. Not knowing what else to do with it I put a leaf over the scrape and wrapped gauze around it. Checked it an hour later and the leaf was black and wilted. Put on another one. When I put her to bed, I put the rest on. Checked in the morning, the red line and sack under her arm was completely gone. The comfrey had drawn out all of the poison. Have grown comfrey ever since, won’t be without it. Mom had arthritis really bad in her back and neck. After we discovered comfrey, she started drinking one cup of tea every day for her arthritis (didn’t cure it but she could sure tell the difference in the pain level if she didn’t take it). Took about a week before she started noticing a difference. Took it every day for 30 years before she died of breast cancer at 84 years old, never had a problem with her liver. I think the key is moderation (as in all things but people need to decide what’s best for them and not take chances if they aren’t comfortable with it). I make a sun tea with dried comfrey and mint (sweetens the drink) and will drink a cup once or twice a month when I notice arthritis stiffening up my fingers.

What is a hippy doctor? Herbalist? Did he have a degree? And since his recommended treatment worked so well, did you continue to seek his skills? And if so, what other remedies or cures worked well?
@sandrah583
@sandrah583 2 жыл бұрын
@@kentneumann5209 This was in the 70s in Southern Oregon when the hippie movement was in full swing. To be honest, I have no idea what kind of degree he had, and after using the comfrey on my daughter I didn't need further treatment for anything. Our family has been pretty healthy (except for some who have allergies and my mother's arthritis which I mentioned). I didn't follow through on other remedies as we moved quite a bit, but I did take a comfrey start with me and the ones I have now are direct descendants of that start. After my divorce I was more settled, only moving a few times and planted my comfrey where ever I have been. I have been using herbs and homeopathy for several years now and find they meet my needs.

I'm big at knowing what "weeds" are in my yard since I'm aware most plants labeled as "weeds" are actually amazing medicinal plants. I also make sure to grab medicinal plants when they hit clearance at my big box stores plant section since many don't know what they are for. I only plant multipurpose plants in my gardens. I had a crop of chickweed in my front yard this spring and gathered it all up and made a tincture which I used for a recent heat rash that I got thanks to our 100 degree weather here in Texas. I was browsing through the seed section and came across evening primrose and it dawned on me that, as a kid these were everywhere in the spring, but I haven't seen any in a couple of years. I'm also noticing dandelions are becoming scarce. People have weed and feeded these wonderfully beneficial pants out of their yards. I've managed to replant some in my medicinal garden which has improved my bee pollinator population, which has been null and void the past couple of years. It's so frustrating how people are decimating beneficial plants and animals that they den as nuisances instead of trying to educate themselves on them and preserve them. We are also seeing dragonflies migrating away from our lake and creeks into our yard, we use filtered water, which concerns me about our natural water supplies and how badly they are being polluted.

@rubytrotter3766 2 жыл бұрын
If you think dandelions are becoming rare, come to the town I live in. The yards are simply loaded with yellow blooms in the spring I have 12 fruit trees with comfrey planted at their bases and 3 more comfrey plants in a bed that I plan on dividing to increase the # of plants I have. I will try making comfrey salve to use in my knees which have DJD as Voltaren gel doesn’t really help that much

@@rubytrotter3766 you have bees don't y'all? We don't, I've literally only seen one bee in our yard. Hoping we're going to get more with the pollinator garden once more flowers bloom. Unfortunately every time I go to Lowe's someone in line is buying pesticides. Think I might have to start bee keeping and hope the HOA doesn't have a clause about them or I'll have to get them certified as support animals. 😉

I bought twenty five seeds, theoretically, off of eBay a couple of years ago. Paid $3.25. taxed & shipped. Not sure how many I actually received since the shells on many of them were smashed. I planted eighteen, and managed to get five plants growing. I have them potted, since I'm hoping to move in a couple of years and will be taking them with me. When they go dormant, I put the pots in the cellar. A couple came out of dormancy early this year, shot straight up, then flopped over before I could get them safely outside. I've put the pots next to each other, and put the flopped over plants onto the other's pot. It's actually pretty comical, they are doing really well even though they're not growing entirely in their own pots. Next year I'll move them to the shed in February or March, then I can put them outside on days there is no inclement weather. That should prevent them from coming up to quick.
