In this episode I attempt to wet-clean 3 books with a low surface tension surfactant. It’s an overly long video so you may want to skip to the end if you are just interested in the outcome and not the process. Even though one book was a failure I felt I should show it anyway because there are so few comic book failure videos. There are many fail videos of guys getting hit in the nuts or falling off a bike, but precious few in comic books!

Great work and information. You've shared quite a bit of useful info here. I'm going to be working on restoring/cleaning some old toy instructions, that process has been based on paper conservancy organizations. But you've introduced me to some chemicals I've not seen used. Subscribed and looking forward to new episodes!

Great video! Just found your channel and you seem like the right guy for my question. For years , I've been buying secondhand books to keep and sell. Probably 70-80% of them (talking about dust jackets) are dirty. To clean them, I use a paper towel lightly sprayed (not soaked) with either Windex or 409. I'm always amazed at the dirt I didn't even know was there that comes off. As far as I know, I've not caused any lasting damage--probably because most book jackets are glossy. Now I have had a few older paper (no gloss) jackets and I will get ink to come up. So here's my question...Assuming you have a comic that's still glossy, and you can get dirt off without pulling up any ink, do you think that the chemicals in those cleaners will cause (unseen) damage to the book that might arise over time. I'm particularly thinking about ammonia. As a side note, I haven't actually tried this on a comic yet. I'm getting back into collecting after losing 99% of my books in a fire 9 years ago. Just learning about cleaning and pressing but wondering if my method will work and doing my research first.
@ImmaculateComics

It Came From The Nerd Cave . That fire sounds heartbreaking. It’s my biggest fear! I hope you didn’t have too many keys in there. Your instincts are correct about the cleaners and I particular the Ammonia. High pH solutions are terror in the cellulose fibers. I always use nonionic surfactants so the are not polar and don’t dissolve much or any ink. It limits their cleaning power but it’s much safer. Water is polar enough anyway. I make up my own solutions and I can sell you some for $10 if you like. It would only be about 50ml of solution but it will mix to make about a liter of cleaner.

@@ImmaculateComics That would be great! Are you on Instagram? If so, do you want to DM me (I'm under the same name--just posted an Iron Man sculpture this AM so you know it's me) your paypal and I can send you the $. As far as the fire...I can't really describe the feeling of losing my collection. It was 10,000 or so books that I'd been collecting since 1978 and I was INTO the hobby. I had a few Silver and Bronze keys but I took a huge hit for my early 90's keys. I would get 10-20 copies of big books during that time frame with an eye towards 30 years ahead. People said I was crazy. There were ALOT of 9.8s in there that would be nice to help with kids' college but what can you do? I really lost my passion for comics because thinking of them was a reminder of what I lost. IG and YT has really gotten me back into it this year and it feels like a missing piece of me is back.

Also, I'm curious about your pressing technique.... mainly, how long do you let it cool down in the press after heatpressing? I've heard people talk about letting the paper relax in the heat press for 12+ hours after cooling down. How long do you let the paper relax after the heat turns off?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 4 жыл бұрын
The "adiabatic load duration" (as I like to call it) depends on the age of the book and the amount of wet vs dry cleaning you've done to it (longer for older/wetter books). But for a general rule I let the temperature return to ambient in the press itself, then I will remove the book and place it under a sheet of about 1/16" aluminum with a 2lb weight on top of it for 8 hours. This liberates the heat press for other work. I'll show that process in a future video if you like. I get my sheets of metal at onlinemetals.com and I have them custom cut to the size of my heat press.
@sghael
@sghael 4 жыл бұрын
@@ImmaculateComics Oh good idea about using weights outside of the press after heat. You're addressing my main issue which is my heat-press is occupied while paper is relaxing. Although I really wonder if that's needed at all... i'm dealing with mostly Bronze age books 70, 80s some 90s. I just started pressing and at first I was leaving the books in there for 12 hours after heat shutoff. Now i'm down to 4 hours and I'm not noticing much difference in paper flatness
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 4 жыл бұрын
Deep Cuts For me about 1/3 of my books will require a lengthy adiabatic load after pressing, depending on where you live, the climate , and the condition of the book. You may not know if you actually needed a post pressing load for a couple of days to a couple of weeks later. The paper will get kind of wavy again after a few days especially in high humidity

Sir Rick, as this is an older video, you probably know this by now, but I can’t help but wonder about this video, if you had used baking paper as well as Teflon, I wonder if the same thing would’ve happened. My pressing stack is so complicated now, probably overly complicated, but I use Teflon above and below the press metal, but always use baking paper for anything that is going to touch the actual book. That includes the cover and any backing board, chamfered board or backer in the middle, everything is always sandwiched by baking paper. So it is metal, Teflon, baking paper, on the top and the bottom, on the inside Cover it would be baking paper, chamfered board, baking paper, in the center, it would be baking paper, backing board, baking paper. Hopefully this is clear and not confusing. If I do this diligently each time, I never get ink removal from the book. Your friend, SfS

actually I do pretty much the same thing now too. Only instead of the baking paper use a special silicone laminated paper. I only use it because of durability. If the baking paper gets a wrinkle or a tear in it, its done-for and I press hundreds of comic books so they have to last for me!

Did you consider putting something absorbent on top and under the paper after applying your solution to allow the "junk" to transfer off before pressing? Also can you mark if any videos are outdated and replace by new better methods if the technique does not apply anymore?

Sodium lauryl sulfonate for making soap about the same?
@ImmaculateComics
@ImmaculateComics 4 жыл бұрын
@@jasonchaney1133 Sodium Lauryl Sulfate would lower the surface tension a lot and may help but what you really need is a nonionic surfactant, a detergent, and an emulsifying agent. I typically either make them myself from palm oil or coconut oil or I buy them from Dow, Stepan, or PCC-Chemax. The problem is that you have to buy them in large quantities that would cost around $5,000. In this video I used a combination of Bioterge PAS-8s (0.25%) from Stepan and LFE-35B (1%) from PCC-Chemax in DI Water. You wouldn't want to use laundry detergent because they use cationic surfactants so that they don't foam up, which is what you want in a washing machine but would also most likely remove some of your ink and also damage your paper. Most laundry detergent add components to make your whites look whiter because they fluoresce and that would either dissolve or alter the color of your inks so it would be ill-advised to use a laundry detergent. If you want to use any household-type cleaning agents at all, I would use a car wash from chemical guys, maguires, or adam but in about a 10% solution with water. maybe add a few drops of isopropanol to lower the surface tension. -Rick

Could you make like a recipe list for the chemicals you use for wet cleaning. Also where to get the chemicals. Give a dumbed down explanation on what to use , when and where to use it . Like when you say DI WATER what on earth does that mean? Or the soap solution you talk about what is that made of . I just feel if you put these kind of things in the information portion it will help the less informed and new to cleaning comics a better understanding of what to do . Thank you for your videos .

My failure rate was initially around 40%, it dropped to 8% after about two years of practice. now it's around 3-5%. I am wet cleaning a high-grade Hulk 181 today. Wet cleaning is not impossible but it's also not for the faint of heart. I have several dozen followers who are submitting photos of great success after some initial failures. It's fraught with hazards but also quite possible for the skilled person.
