in this video I drop several comic book protective cases from a height of 66 feet. They fell for 2.025 seconds and hit the ground at a speed of 44.4 miles per hours.

After a completely ridiculous experiment: "So, what did we learn today..." 😂 I love it. It is a lot more satisfying watching CGC case get decimated on your channel than when dropped from a mere 4 feet onto my floor. Those things are so brittle. Next experiment you might want to test comic boxes by launching them from a trebuchet!

I like the one where the slab survived intact and was then "pressed" out by a steamroller and subsequently became a 9.9.

You might consider conducting tensile testing so you can accurately evaluate stresses across a slab. corners, edges, and slab face likely stress at different degrees. Your “experiment’s” results are skewed because the amount of force applied by each slab is unequal to each of the previously mentioned areas. When dropped the slab’s impact area differs due to the lack of control as the slab’s orientation upon impact differs from each drop.

We test radioactive material packaging for accident conditions that include a free-drop from 30 feet. You know, a public safety thing. I guess dropping slabbed comics from a height of 66 feet makes sense. We don't want a release of comics into the environment!

You live in a high rise and your girlfriend throws your stuff off the balcony, before she kicks you to the curb. Lol. So yes, good test...

Hate to be that guy but the height should have been adjusted for the weight of the book/case since I’m sure they don’t all weigh the exact same. You’re the smartest guy I know figure it out.

So it seems to be beneficial to have an inner sleeve/well or at least a bag and board to help protect the books when in a DIY capsule. Would like to see average day test like dropping on wood, tile or concrete floor@ average height of 4 to 5 feet.down a flight of stairs or off the countertops.etc.enjoying these test. Thank you.

I'm a little surprised that you didn't drop a raw unprotected book, a book in a poly bag with and with out back board and a book in a mylar sleeve with and with out back board, just for the sake of completeness with the raw book as the control.. I do understand the object was to test the slabs/cases, yet I can't help but be curious for the other things we use to protect our comics. Of course the best way would be if you could drop it through some sort of containment that would prevent wind maybe a staircase, that would be a much more likely scenario where someone might accidentally drop a book and have it go down stairs (hmmm a whole new experiment!

Yeah my thoughts were also along these lines. I’m not sure you can extrapolate these results up and down the height spectrum. I suspect air resistance played a factor in the lighter weight cases performing better from this height. I further suspect if a bagged and boarded comic landed correctly, the book could emerge completely unscathed, which would seem to indicate that a bag and board was superior protection to a CGC slab. 🤔

How did you pick 66 feet? I would say a more likely extreme drop would be 16 feet from a second story balcony or staircase landing on a edge or corner. But still a fun use of a cherry picker and slow motion.

On amazon, there are reviews showing pictures of comic toploaders arriving pretty banged up. I have little doubt if it had hit differently, it would've cracked or broken similarly to the cgc/cbcs holders. Landing flat like it did is probably the best outcome you can hope for.

My background is in Mechanical/Materials Engineering but I am wondering how you came up with a height of 65 feet for the drop? Also, the wind was pretty turbulent on some of your tests and the angle of impact for these drops will highly skew the stress distribution (landing flat vs. landing on a sharp corner) which would make me think each slab needed at least a few drops to verify these tests (aka slightly larger sample size). One final point is that you had different comics in each slab and newer books are much heavier than older books so there is also an inertial difference that comes into play as well. Just some things I was thinking of, great video though!

So don’t drop your slabs from 65ft 😂 This should score CBCS some points.

I get your idea but not sure why you didnt include a PGX case. Your experiments show that the grading of comics is way out of hand and the top company cgc does not stand up to its hype this plus the current scandal proves it. Grade for the fun and love of it and use which ever company you want for your collection. Most of all stop trying to destroy other people collection becaue you love one more than the others. Also why or when are you going to test the other grading companies in the US and abroad?
