Thanks, I really needed this because everytime I write dialog it always sounds stiff and boring. You actually got me here 8:46 plus english is not my native language so it's really hard for me to not make direct descriptions like instead of saying "You think I'm dumb?" it's better to say "You think I was born yesterday?" or "My birthday is near." to "My birthday is just around the corner." something like that pls don't judge me haha

I just don’t want to write everything (and proof read and whatnot) and then not be able to draw what I want. Like having issues with anatomy or mood. But yeah! I agree that some people can write stiffly and because my comic’s dialogues are pretty short, I wouldn’t say it’s too bad? Especially when it comes to the time period, ages, etc. but these are very helpful tips! Thanks again, Walter.

Short and sweet. Great points! After I graduated in '73, I bought my first Thesaurus. Still have it. A valuable tool! But now, there is Google. LOL. There are ways to make characters sound intelligent without being grandiose. Of course there are exceptions, depending on the character. Your content is great! That is why I subscribed. I am a little bit closer to launching my own webtoon, but I still need to smooth out some rough edges. Step one: create a good story. That is where I am, at the moment. I think the rest will come naturally. That is me.

With dialogue, it's always important to consider your character. A very formal character is prolly gonna be formal in their speaking too. A laid back character would prolly slurr words and such. It's not enough to just write normal sounding dialogue, your dialogue must also sound normal to the person you have crafted.

I think it would depend on how important it is to the story and the type of impediment specifically. Can you do something with writing kids as characters? Like around elementary school? Obviously I can’t always relate to children and I can’t always speak with them and especially now I have no idea what little kids really talk like these days cause they seem to be changing constantly. Either way it would help

Do you mean how to write a non-adult convincingly or do you mean trying to keep up with the latest slang/abbreviation, so that your characters sound hip? Also do you mean like 5 year olds or we talking 13-18?

@@walterostlie someone around 5-10 years old. I’m trying to figure out how to make his dialogue sound simple but also finding a way to make it sound real, like “yeah, this is what a little kid would say”. I also know it probably depends on the kid’s personality, but overall I want to be able to write engaging dialogue while still making him sound little and innocent. I have no problem with teens though...I mean, I am one.

Hmm, I'll think about it. Usually I default towards making people just sound like people unless you have a super strong confidence in getting a certain type of "character" across. But I'd say for young kids, they tend to understand things more literally and use solutions that drive straight through problems. There's less intricacies to their words and thoughts.
