I've been loving these collabs with Warren Bernard. Getting a breadth of knowledge and perspective from his generation alongside Jim/Ed's offers a new level of appreciation for the classics.

Another bang up show, gentlemen! I've been picking up a bunch of Spirit Archives lately, so this came at a great time. I've been around comics a LOT, even worked in 2 shops, and I've NEVER seen any of the newspaper Spirit originals. I guess the 40's paper drives wiped them out. A tabloid sized edition of a Best of The Spirit would be FIRE!!

Those are so beautiful. Eisner was always actively trying to crash out of the comics ghetto, so the prestige of newspaper syndication may have been of some value. But as you say, he was a hustler and he ran a studio that sold comics. By 1942, the Spirit was appearing in Quality's Police Comics and he got his own book in 1944. Lady Luck showed up in Smash Comics and eventually had her own title at Quality. I don't know if Mr. Mystic was reprinted, but the Bob Powell episodes are incredible. Eisner made his money back probably pretty quickly by recycling the Spirit in comics at Quality and Fiction House, and resold the same material over and over for the rest of his life. So not a bad investment of labor as a young artist.

Man, I love these sections. I have about 120 now, with about 30 tabloids, but I love that Autumn Mews one…that’s one of the few that continues to elude me. Great to see this and sorry it took me so long to!

Being carried by 25 Sunday newspapers doesn't sound like a lot, but I understand that gave the SPIRIT a combined circulation of five million copies during the 1940s.

I have one full Fun Book. I’d love to have more. And that P’Gell section is another one of the few left that I really want that I’m missing 🙌

I love how easy it is to read comics and create comics on the web today, but I do feel like in some ways I missed out on the comics boom in newspapers in the era of The Spirit!

Man, I am loving these series of deep dives, fellas. So wonderful that this history is being documented at this level. Thanks! Also, with reference to the Toledo paper, my guess is that it was bustling with industry at this point, as it is not too far out from Detroit (aka The Arsenal of Democracy), which was knee deep 27/7 in the WWII effort. All the love from Chicago. Keep on pushing. Digging on it all.

Wow, the american ones are even more beautiful than I thought!! Here in Brasil we didn't have Spirit on Newspapers but there was Gibi, a 70s very cool all comics tabloid my father used to buy, he thaught me how to read using those beauties. Those color versions of the Spirit on newsprint paper are true gems to me. One of the greatest "comics moment" in history.

Great vid, big Eisner fan here. BTW, the PS sidebar strips and the "Next Week" blurb have indeed been reprinted. I can confirm that they are included in the comprehensive 27-volume DC hardcover "Spirit Archives", which presents the entire newspaper run in chronological order. Unfortunately, the archive editions are long out of print. I've got the whole collection, but a complete set will set you back a little money.

Love to see Warren appearing in more videos and the wealth of knowledge he brings...as well as the amazing treasures! Love the conversation between all three of you. Amazing to see these preserved in this form, and the PA connection just adds to the whole thing. Great stuff all around here.

Another great video, I am impressed that newspaper strips survived after all this time.great art compared to the lack luster art in strips today.

If it was only in 25 papers it seems surprising it last 12 years in the competitive comic strip market!

The spirit in color from kitchen sink published the spirit in close to tabloid size, I think its closer to european album size because I think its reprinted from europe. Its also got some weird psychedelic colors
