See, now I'm fine with the whole, "They're aliens, they mature at different rates" argument, but the part that makes this whole thing uncomfortable is the fact that they made the point to say she's the "Earthly equivalent" of her being 13-14, because that brings onto it not ONLY the cultural crawlies of ew, but also brings to mind that this individual isn't fully developed within her own species. If they had left it at, she's 13 years old on earth, but on her planet is 28 and just left the wording like that, okay, fine, we'd probably all unconsciously write that off as her being fully developed in her world, but the words "earthly equivalent" change things largely.

So should we also talk about putting a weapon of mass destruction on the finger of a teen, giving her a galactic badge and send her out to fight Cthulu and friends in space?

In the issue where Arisia came back from the dead, it was revealed that 13 years on Arisia's planet was decades of earth time, so Arisia was much older and wiser than Hal. Ah, retcons! About the underaginess, DC also had Deathstroke getting it on with Terra, and I'm pretty sure the intention wasn't "ewwww!" so much as "this proves what a rule-breaker Terra is". I think this is an artifact of our cultural shuffling of sexual mores after the 1960s and 1970s. The Sexual Revolution held that sex needs to revolve around consent, which is a fantastic starting place. But that leads to questions about informed consent, age disparities, and the like; and while we've since come to take age considerations VERY seriously, things were still a bit in flux in the 80s. (Remember, this was an era when "Revenge of the Nerds" featured a rape that was supposed to get us on the rapist's side, because the woman consented. We have a deeper understanding of what consent really means now,: it's not just saying yes, it's also about having a full understanding of the situation and context.)

I actually find the story interesting as you described it in the beginning. Hal having to deal with a teammate with an inappropriate crush on him is an interesting dynamic with Hal having to balance being nice to someone he does appreciate against propriety, and Arisa having to accept he's not interested while frustrated that she's got adult responsibilities as a space-cop but isn't seen as an adult. Could be an interesting set of character conflicts that'd eventually lead to interesting conversations. Then she fast-forwarded herself through puberty, and I see how this fell apart!

In the recent Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps series, Arisia had almost zero dialogue even though she was there for many scenes and battles. It's almost as if they're trying to include her without including her.

Actually Gail Simone retcon in Birds of Prey that Hal never had threesome with Huntress and Lady Blackhawk because she didnt like how that threesome would work implied that both were drunk and Hal took advantage of them and Huntress told Black Canary that he was so drunk that imagine the threesome while dreaming that it was real thing. Plus it would be stupid of Lady Blackhawk being that drunk since she is a heavy drinker and she can handle her alcohol not matter what and she was involved in this because Green Lantern could just tell Green Arrow that he had threesome with Black Canary (aka at the time Green Arrow´s wife) and Huntress.

Honestly this doesn't bother me at all since you have to remember aliens do have different cultural norms. The _Young Justice_ cartoon even referenced this by mentioning that Ms. Martian was 46 by Earth years but by Mars' standards was still a child and it showed by how immature she acted with her powers despite being technically older than Superman. This show was pretty smart.

When they reintroduced her after Green Lantern Rebirth, the author retconned her backstory reversing the earlier talk about different lengths of years: instead of “my homeworld revolves around its sun twice as fast as Earth, so technically I’m 28”, the new retcon is that when Hal first met her, she told him that she was 14 but because her homeworld revolves around its sun twice as _slowly_ as Earth, she was _actually_ 28. I think it was also retconned that her species physically matures more slowly than humans; so despite having 28 years of experience and mental maturity, she still had a teenage body, albeit closer to 18 than 14. In other words, Geoff Johns retconned “Arisia the jailbait GL” out of existence. In the retconned reality, the two of them _had_ dated briefly, but never when she was underage.

Well, Hal didn't even give her the time of day until after she used the Dragon Balls to become an adult, so I think it's a little unfair to characterize him as some sort of cradle-robbing creeper. Granted she was still immature and bratty (despite being like 200 years old) but so are a lot of women.

Just how often does underage characters get romantically paired with older characters in comics? It's so weird and freaky and yet comics seem a little too comfortable at times doing it.

The worst part about this is that from what you showed us it seems to imply a lot of time passing in universe before they even hooked up, so she should've been at least 16 o 17 when she aged herself, which means they probably could've said that and then waited until she was 18 to make this happen, not that that's any better as it would still imply that he's always been just waiting out the clock, but by forcing it to happen while she was still 14 and then retconing it to 13 they show that they didn't just want them together they wanted her to be underage.

I was interested in reading the reading post crisis dc stories so I was sampling the first few issues of multiple different characters first material set post crisis and In the case of green lantern I came across the start of the point in all this where she starts really coming on to Hal and wills herself into being an adult, needless to say quite off putting material to first come across by accident

Normally I'm a pretty big proponent of anything, and I do mean *ANYTHING,* goes in fiction. If an author wants to write a story about about characters engaging in taboo or even outright illegal activities I think they should have every right to do so. However, I also think it is at least equally important that there should be a purpose to such stories within the narrative.

More weirdness: The Green Lantern Corps' drunken office party that Drake mentioned wasn't exactly their idea: Guy Gardener, holding a grudge after being kicked out of the main team, snuck into the party and spiked the GL's drinks just to screw with them. Green lantern emerald knights uses her second design and presents her as a young adult rookie green lantern . That would defintly make the relationship not as creppy. Though the source material would still make it a little iffy at best.
