Mid to Late 90s was what i like to call the "future age" because you had Marvel making comics that took place in the distant future like Age of Apocalypse and Spiderman 2099.

I was a 90s kid, but didn't get into comics until the Modern Era, like The New 52 and DC Rebirth. So I'm glad that the 90s arcs have been republished so I can read what I missed out on as a kid. I'm also getting into the Golden and Silver Ages, which have also been republished.

Great video! I'm in full agreement with your decisions. Lol..Deathmate! In the 90's, you gotta love those gimmick covers 😄. There were a few exceptions that paid off though? For example the gold and black shiny covers for Venom: Lethal Protector. Again, I enjoyed your video, and look forward to your next one

End of Copper Age: Kingdom Come. This miniseries was written as a reaction to all of the things that characterized the Copper Age, and advocated for a resurgence of heroism in superhero comics. If you're going to have a single age that lasted roughly a decade, I would put the next transition from one age to the next in the early to mid 2000s, with Dan Didio taking over at DC and Joe Quesada taking over at Marvel. The comic book that I'd peg as the transition point for DC would be the crossover story “Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day”. This crossover literally destroyed the two teams in question and set the stage for the next 18 years or so, as something of a return to the dark elements of the Copper Age. And over at Marvel Comics, I would pin the transition to One More Day, the story that undid the Peter/MJ marriage and attempted to reset Spider-Man to something more like the Bronze Age. I personally view there being one more transition, occuring in the late 2010s to now; although I'm not sure if it's the start of a new age or the dying gasps of superhero comics. I'd like to say the former; but I'm more pessimistic than I used to be. If I had to give a hard break, I'd put it in 2020, when the COVID lockdowns destroyed the former distribution model for comic books.

I think - along with Crisis for DC - Marvel firing Jim Shooter in 1987 marks the point they entered the Copper Age….the stories aren’t nearly as good. The next 10 years or so, it seems they both tried to (as you said) cater to speculators with all the gatefold foil covers, etc, instead of concentrating on good stories. I this is when the Modern Age began. And, unless something comes along like the next Superman or Spider-Man, we may be in the Modern Age for a long time. I believe the core readers are all over 30, and the younger readers simply aren’t there. I hope I’m wrong. My two cents.😉 I’ve enjoyed all the great videos this week my friend - have a great weekend!

Thanks James! Glad you’ve been enjoying! I agree... that catering to speculators ending up catching up to them in the end... when Pearlman bought Marvel and starting throwing trading cards in with comics, that is when the really sealed their fate in the 90s lol. To me, the modern age actually began in 1996 when Marvel did that "Marvel '96" thing in which the artistic direction of their comics changed drastically, followed by DC's redesign of Superman's costume and some of his powers. In fact, I do feel that today's comics aesthetics began in the mid nineties.

I have the deathmate white cover with all the autographs on it. I have to be able to pay off some college debt and retire early. Also I know superman holding the lifeless body of supergirl is considered the change of the era but the very next issue was the death of Flash so I almost think it has to be part of that same era.

Re: end of the Copper Age, I'm going to go with the end of 1987, when the incredibly (and arguably most creative) polarising Editor-In-Chief of Marvel, Jim Shooter, was fired. I reckon things really did change, after that. Including myself quitting comics, and missing out on Amazing Spider-Man #300...D'oh! :(
@Dante19883
@Dante19883 3 жыл бұрын
Awww man that is horrible.. sorry you missed it… yes a few people have mentioned they believe shooter getting fired was the turning point to the copper age… very plausible indeed!
@blackpeter70
@blackpeter70 3 жыл бұрын
@@Dante19883 Yeah, Dante. I'm a dope for never getting Spider-Man #300 (I've got the previous two!). The only comics I kept getting were Miracleman, The Shadow, Watchmen (I wasn't missing out on that!), and probably Justice League. Things just felt different with Shooter gone - Byrne and Pèrez came back to Marvel, and a lot of new, but inferior, series started up. With DC, one thing really pissed me off. They never finished the Body and Soul storyline in The Shadow! They never published a last issue! It was a shame, as I was so in love with Kyle Baker's art. That series really deserved an audience. But folks just wanted more Wolverine, Batman, and the Punisher. But this was also the age of the Independent Comic, too...

Hello, Dante. I watched some of your videos a while ago but I have recently started watching some of your newer videos and I have been enjoying them. In my opinion, it is absurd to say that Superman was the first superhero. Just two examples of superheroes that came before him are Mandrake The Magician and The Phantom. Also, "juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence" , as Scott McCloud would say, have existed for thousands of years and the traditional comic strip was created in 1895. So I think that it would be more accurate to say that the stone age of comics was ?-1895 and the platinum age of comics took place between 1895 and 1938. Furthermore, the comic book medium is not in the same state that it was in twenty years ago, so I think that it would be most accurate to say that the "Stupid Age" (The best that I could think of) started around 2015 and has not ended since. Additionally, I would say that there is an era between the copper and modern age, which most people refer to as the Dark Age.

Hi there! Thanks for watching and commenting. Glad you have been enjoying the videos. Yes, there were some heroes before Superman… like the ones you mentioned, additionally zorro, Tarzan, the shadow… you make a good point.. I just felt Superman took it to the next level and redefined the superhero archetype. Thanks for the info on the platinum age.. that is one era I don’t know much about. Hope to hear from you again in an upcoming video. Cheers!

It seems to me that we are NOT really in the modern age, but in the CINEMATIC AGE (I'm sure someone should have thought the same thing, although this obviously conclusion is mine). Morrison's X-Men and the Ultimates set a new standard that influenced the explosion of superheroes in theaters, which in turn influenced the stories back. And after that? Not Modern Age yet, but a kind of "Politically Correct" age, in which it is not even the taste of real comic book consumers that drives the industry, but the dictates of consumers of movies and series and our sweet youngsters, moderators of other people's opinions, who want not really more inclusion but, mainly, the destruction of well-known icons of "patriarchy, patriotism and Christianity". As an organic response, films, series and the comics itselves are seeing the bloom of works that deconstruct the genre, which without space for uncensored creativity, has moved towards artificiality. I'm pretty sure that the current generation will beg for their own "Comics Code Authority" label.

If I could say anything about The 90s Era vs The Modern Era of comics its this: The 90s were willing to take chances and added to the larger continuity that comics created. There were no constant reboots, no reprinting of #1's...and every Clone Saga, Infinity War, Maximum Carnage, Infinite Crisis, Secret Wars etc...was its own story and not one to be revised for a books title unless it was something significant.

Awesome discussion! I haven't watched your videos in months & decided to get away from all the craziness going on nowadays, but it's so hard to not get into politics with all this "woke" crap everywhere! Hey where did the comics code go? The Bronze age: You heroes think you made this world a better place but you forgot about the black man, oh and your side kick is junkie. And way to go saving Gwen, you killed her anyway you moron! Why is the sky turning red and what is this dog carcass found in alley you speak of? The Modern age: We heroes cannot die?....Oh my god Robin and Superman are dead! But they'll come back in a multi title cross over with variant covers right? Are we even heroes? What is a hero?
