Part 2 Anyway, back to Shuma-Gorath and the Vishanti. With their combined might, they were able to banish (though not kill) Shuma-Gorath back to his home dimension and then turn all their power towards reinforcing Gaia’s mystic barrier around the Earth dimension, protecting it from ANY mystical threats that might be out there. And I know Conan was supposedly the one who defeated Shuma-Gorath with the power of his god, Crum and some sacred texts behind him. The thing is, the way Shuma-Gorath works when he’s invading a realm, is he basically sticks... just the tip... of a tentacle into the realm he wants to get inside of and then slowly forces more and more of himself into that realm like a 3 foot octopus squeezing itself through a hole 6 inches wide. He then “sleeps” for a while (which is why he’s referred to as “He who sleeps but shall awake”) gathering his energy before emerging and starting his domination, all the while feeding off the terror and suffering of those around him to get even MORE powerful until eventually he can drag his entire from into the realm. It’s at that point he basically starts wrecking everything just by being there. All Conan really did was push back the fraction of him which had manifested on earth so far. The REAL battle happened on a metaphysical level between Shuma-Gorath and the Vishanti. . But I’m getting off topic again. It is also implied that when Cthon first left the physical universe for extra-dimensional space, he didn’t go straight to the Flickering Realms he occupies currently but, that he in fact created those afterwards since initially, he just opened up a portal and jumped in. It’s possible… likely even, that the first place he ended up was in the Splinter Realms. Its arguably the closet realm to the Earth dimension after all and it seems to be the go-to place for any kind of spirit when they are leaving the physical plane. It makes sense that Cthon would build a Throne there and rule over it from there. Only back then they wouldn’t have been splintered at that time. It would have all been one dimension because the Hell-Lords and various pantheons from which the Death Gods arose who divided it up amongst themselves later on didn’t even exist yet. It wasn’t until the Demogorge purged all its excess negative energy from consuming all the Elder Demons aside from Cthon and Set that said negative energy coalesced into multiple sentience’ which in turn became the Hell-Lords. Lesser, diminished versions of the great Elder Demons from whose essence they formed. I don’t want to derail again (this comment is already huge) but Set wasn’t actually evil. He was an analogue for destruction which, in this case at least, is a completely neutral force. Impartial and unbiased. . But there’s more. Unlike pretty much any other entity that could invade Earth’s dimension, the reason Cthon doesn’t just walk back in isn’t actually because of the double layered mystic barrier designed to keep him and things like him out. Its specifically because Cthon is SO powerful that there is no dimensional rift that exists which is large enough for him to transport his full essence through. Keep in mind that there have been dimensional portals the size of whole universes in Marvel before. That’s why he always has to act through proxies and Avatars in the form of beings which he can or has corrupted with a fraction of his power. Either that or he gets an existing servant to summon a tiny fraction of him into a host and then act through them. Just like when Quicksilver was possessed by Cthon. . An important thing to note here too is that Cthon had no issues coming into and even partially manifesting in this realm despite all its defences, it’s just that he could only manage to get a fraction of his power through. And even that fraction we saw in Quicksilver was so powerful that he banished the ENTIRE REALM OF ASGARD to the Void just for the lols (and likely coz he knew both Thor and Loki could potentially mess with his plans by taking out his herald or host - Mordred the Mystic and Quicksilver respectively). The idea that despite all the mystical warding placed around earth, Cthon would be able to just come back anyways if it weren’t for the fact that he’s too big to fit through the door indicates that Cthon is LUDICROUSLY powerful, even compared to other mystical entities. So I mean, it kinda makes sense that Dormammu would invoke him in his great rituals. . Anyway, with all that said (and deapite what ended up turning partially intoa Cthon wankfest), it would seem to me that out of all the potential candidates we know about, Cthon is by far the most viable as there is legitimate evidence to back it up unlike pretty much anyone else. And those few who DO have something to back them, don’t have nearly as MUCH as Cthon does.
