Actually, Wolverine was originally created as an antagonist for the Hulk before later becoming an X-Man, so his entire powerset is designed to fight Hulk. Wolverine was made to heal just as quickly as Hulk and has a - for all intents and purposes - indestructible skeleton that Hulk can't break, with similarly indestructible claws that could actually hurt him. In the past they were somewhat evenly matched, though neither of them could kill the other and Hulk was usually winning. But since Hulk in this comic is the angriest he's ever been in his life - and therefore stronger than he's ever been before, along with having Banners genius intellect on top of his strength - Logan just couldn't keep up with him this time.

This Hulk would obliterate Thanos. Pretty much the entire point of the World War Hulk storyline is to show that when Hulk and Bruce are of one mind, one goal instead of restricting each other, there is absolutely no one and no force that can stop Hulk.

Specifically, Wolv's healing factor will be overtaxed due to the fact that Wolv is dying at faster rate than he can heal, which will permanently kill him. In one of the universes, Wolverine died that way when Kitty put her hand in Wolverine's head and left it there, and Wolverine died at faster rate than he can heal, so he died permanently.

The conflict between these two is called Civil War (which is what the new Captain America film is based upon). Before Tony backed the idea, he asked his peers in a group called the Illuminati, which comprises of the world's smartest and most intelligent individuals. Members include Stark, Mister Fantastic, Doctor Strange, Professor X, Namor and a few others. Literally, everybody voted in favour of the law being passed except for Namor, but they realised that the Hulk would be too dangerous and too powerful to overcome if he opposed the idea. Therefore, they sent him off into space where he crash landed on a planet and had to fight for his life through gladiator matches. (This story is called Planet Hulk) Hulk eventually became the ruler of the planet, and married, when the ship he crash landed in exploded, killing his wife and unborn child. Seeking revenge, he takes his super strong group called the Warbound, and heads to Earth to seek revenge of the Illuminati. What you're seeing here is Hulk looking for Professor X to punish him, and the X-Men defending him. This story is called World War Hulk. Hope that clears up everything. Any questions?
