When we first heard Peru has a special kind of Japanese Peruvian Cuisine we couldn't wait to get our chopsticks on it. Given that we both love Japanese food and we both adore Peruvian cuisine, some kind of hybrid between the two, sounded very enticing. After researching for a while, we decided to visit TAIKEN SUSHI LOUNGE located in Miraflores. The restaurant decor was tastefully put together making us feel like we were having an authentic Japanese restaurant experience. We ended up ordering several Nikkei dishes including acebichado, tempura with local fish, sushi, nigiri and sashimi. It was an incredible meal and we ended up getting some complimentary ceviche inspired rolls near the end of our meal. We couldn't even finish it all. If you'd like to visit this restaurant here is the address:

Comida Nikkei Food: Eating Japanese Peruvian Cuisine in Lima, Peru Travel Video Transcript:
#eatPERU
Okay, so for today's lunch we are eating at a place called Taiken and they specialize in Nikkei food. Now this is something that I hadn't heard of until I came to Peru but apparently Peru has the second largest Japanese population in all of South America. And that has really influenced the cuisine. So Nikkei is the combination of Peruvian and Japanese culinary inspiration. So yeah, we're going to be trying some Japanese Peruvian food today.
Okay, so first up we are going to try the Yakitori which is basically a skewer. And this one has chicken. And I see a bit of spice there. Spicy chili powder. So I'm going to dip it in.
This is really good. The food just keeps rolling in. It has a like a sweet glaze. So what makes this Nikkei?
Okay, so this right here is Pejerrey tempura. Tempura time. And this is basically the local catch. Which makes it. And this sauce is really unique because normally when I've had a dipping sauce, like when I'm having Japanese food, it is typically cold. And this is piping hot. You can actually see the steam coming off of it. Whoops!
That is really nice. Okay, one second to chew this. So, when we ordered this one off of the menu we saw that it said acevichado which kind of sounds like Ceviche and if you try this fish you'll be able to tell that it has been cured in lime and it just has a very zesty fresh flavor. You actually don't even need the soy sauce because it is so flavorful on its own. And I'm still not entirely sure about the green powder but I do like it. So yeah, that is like a really interesting twist on sushi because you have the ceviche influence coming through. So pretty cool.
I really thought the different rolls that tasted a bit like ceviche were incredibly unique and something we've never tasted anywhere else in any other kind of Japanese type of restaurant. So it was really really cool. And also the unique tempura as well. And then to have some of our favorite classic Japanese rolls along with that. It just made for a pretty exceptional meal to be honest. So overall, would you say Nikkei food is more Japanese or more Peruvian? It is kind of in the middle of that spectrum. I mean, like yeah, obviously you can order your Japanese classics but when you're eating the ones that taste a bit like ceviche I would say it is more Peruvian. So thumbs up for Nikkei! Two. Yeah.
And price point for that Nikkei meal? Price point, so that came to a hundred and thirty Soles which is $40 US dollars. In terms of value that was incredible. I mean, we had to bring home a whole bunch of it. We couldn't finish it off. It was a lot of food. Yeah, especially with that complimentary set of rolls. Really really good quality, excellent food, I'd highly recommend this restaurant and to experience Nikkei food in Lima, Peru.
This is part of our Travel in Peru series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Peruvian culture, Peruvian arts, Peruvian foods, Peruvian religion, Peruvian cuisine and Peruvian people.
We feature Comida Peruana, Cocina Peruana and Comida Nikkei in this video.

It's amazing how nikkei restaurants and sushi bars have multiplied in just a few years in Lima and Peru in general. We can say that, about 5 years ago it was kinda hard to find 'em and now they're like everywhere. And I think it's part because of the Acevichado maki, which is without a doubt the most popular maki here. The sauce on top is a mix of leche de tigre (the juice of the ceviche) and mayonnaise and some spices. I remember I tried one and after that I became an instant fan of nikkei cuisine xD there are also other nikkei restaurants especialized in ramen soup and hot dishes like yakitori, tonkatsu and yakimeshis. You should try 'em if you have the chance guys! :D

+Samuel & Audrey youre welcome guys!. As a "peruvian euro japanese" (very extrange racial mixup, but is what i am), i know something about "peruvian japanese food" origins. Actually it started about 60 or 70 years ago by second generation japanese immigrants who started to blend japanese recipes with peruvian ingredients and techniques, maybe because of the japanese ingredients import restriction of the wwii and mainly because of their immersion into the peruvian society. This style was Formally exposed to any public in 1950¡ in mr Minoru Kunidamis restaurant "la buena muerte" (the good death), a restaurant that still exists and was not high end, but very middle class. He intruced peruvians to raw fish (not cooked on lemon, as ceviche), to tempura in the famous "pan con pejerrey" (silverside tempura sandwich) and some other blends. It kept only as an exotic place very known only to nikkeis and few others. The second wave was in the 70s and the third at the beggining of the 90s.
@samuraifugitivo
@samuraifugitivo 8 жыл бұрын
+samuraifugitivo the first japanese immigrants arrived at the end of the 1800, so, it has been a very long process since then, not a yesterday invention.

I wonder what makes the Japanese settle in Peru
@samuelandaudrey
@samuelandaudrey 7 жыл бұрын
I was curious myself and found some of this information from wikipedia: "Japanese Peruvians (Spanish: peruano-japonés or nipo-peruano, Japanese: 日系ペルー人, Nikkei Perūjin) are Peruvian citizens of Japanese origin or ancestry.The Japanese began arriving in Peru in the late 1800s. Many factors motivated the Japanese to immigrate to Peru.At the end of the nineteenth century in Japan, the rumor spread that a country called Peru somewhere on the opposite side of the earth was "full of gold". This country, moreover, was a paradise with a mild climate, rich soil for farming, familiar dietary customs, and no epidemics, according to advertisements of Japanese emigration companies. (Konno and Fujisaki, 1894)[better source needed] 790 Japanese, all men between the ages of 20 and 45, left Japan in 1898 to work on Peru's coastal plantations as contract laborers. Their purpose was simple: to earn and save money for the return home upon termination of their four-year contracts. The 25 yen monthly salary on Peru's plantations was more than double the average salary in rural Japan (Suzuki, 1992)." More reading here --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Peruvians

Quien debe informarse lastimosamente eres tu primera dosis. Saludos. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rcqlZNiT3L2dYmg.html

You never have to use soy sauce, especially when there's a sauce on top.

Yes, that is a good point but we really love soy sauce. But you're right in the sense it would taste fine without it.

As a 100% PERUVIAN. I would say theres no such a thing as a japanese Peruvian food. Either our local food in Peru is Peruvian or not. To call in Peru food Japanese first and then Peruvian is insulting. Me personally prefer ceviche 100% times more than Japanese food. Japanese in Peru always mark their culture first and then Peru. Peru received them with open arms to become Peruvians not Japanese Peruvians. If they feel identifies more with Japan first and then Peru, they should go back to Japan.

I'm sorry, but this video doesn't do Nikkei food justice. The research behind the video is weak, and the video needs a lot of editing. I know it's your style, but it's far too long. You're pretty much just eating sushi and sashimi and making stuff up.
