I was shocked and sad to see that in 2017 kids still go through this ordeal of acceptance in school and family. I'm glad your family supported you, but what you felt was what I felt growing up in the 70s in a South American Catholic Macho country. No one should be subjected to this. But I can say that as you grow older, things will get better. Good luck

My advise is to tell siblings and friends first before parents because if all goes wrong (which rarely happens), there are people to support you, and with siblings, they can protect you when you tell your parents. Thank you for sharing your story. I think 1 video can go a long way and you are pointing it in the right direction.

coming out during the 80's and 90's was not so easy for some o us specially coming from a religious background. This new generation is so lucky to live in a generation where homosexuality is being more acceptable

Why it has to be so difficult and why we have to face so much hate... I want to come out to my dad, but I'm afraid how it will affect him. I love my parents so so so much and I think they love me too, they are my everything and we are really close and my dad is one of my best friends. Even though my mum knows about me we've never talked about it after I came out and I think she is still disapproving because of the society and the disapproval which might bring to the family and my family is quite respected one. Thankfully, I don't live there. London is where I can be myself. And if I can just tell my parents that I love them and as long as we stay together and true to each other, it doesn't matter what hate we get or not. I honestly believe that shared Love is stronger than hate... Thank you for the video and sorry for speaking my mind. As Troye sais "I am tired of this place, I hope people change"

Had no idea I was gay until I was 24 and still did not come out till I was 27. I had friends who were both male and female throughout my school years. No one ever had a clue, was never outed. Biggest challenges back in my younger days was AIDS or the Black Death so You Tube would have never helped. Glad I'm still alive these days and nowadays being out is not a big deal to me. I wish it could have been better but at least I'm still alive. Best of luck!!!!!

My parents still think its a phase and that i can change my sexuality. :( I suffered a lot when i had to pretend i liked girls and had to date them, but now i'm sick and tired of that. I'm glad to know there are others like me. Be always proud of who you are!

Thanks for sharing! I must say that I'm really surprised that even nowadays, even in Sweden, that there's still some level of homophobia in school. That shows we do need a lot of work to do. Sam, thanks for sharing something so personal. This might be a bit long but it's a serious question/concern. Though I think the situation has improved from when I came out 30 years ago, it is still hard. It is still scary. It is sad that so many kids are still crying themselves to sleep and having to hide who they are. It is a huge burden that kids have to bear. Like you, I know that first hand. Since you are so open to sharing, I have a personal question for you. I don't have an answer or a solution, but I would like to know your opinion. What would make it easier to come out? Is there anything your family or friends could have done that would have encouraged you to come out sooner? Part of the reason I bring this up is that I have heard from people that were on the brink of killing themselves. When they did come out, most of their friends and family would say something like "oh, yeah, we knew...we don't care...we love you anyway", etc. Don't get me wrong, it's great that they had a positive coming out experience and were accepted and loved. But I just can't get over all the years of suffering, and fear, and hiding, and lying that some kids have to go through that might not have been necessary. Thank you in advance for sharing any thoughts you have.

Why did you move to Australia?

I never came out and I am 62. I just lived my gay life. It was never discussed. I have been with my husband 32 years. I am more than being gay. Being gay does not define me. I am also an Engineer, Financial Planner, Republican, etc.

In elementary school I knew then I liked boys WAY MORE than I liked girls. I used to crush on the cute guys in my classrooms. Guess I matured way younger and way faster than my peers. But it was a time that you kept it all to yourself, which is harmful to your self being. Things are a bit different today compared to then. Glad you came out and be yourself.

how do you know when its the right time? im 16 atm and promised myself that il move out before i come out because i dont want to get in trouble with my parents since they can be verry harch and they are homophobic but i dont want to feel like i am keeping a major secret from them and like I am wrong here any tips? on how to cope?

Thank you Samuel - what can I say - I used Lockdown to come out - it meant I couldn't face anyone. It took me 38 years to come out, I know those tears - how did it take so long ? I suppose I grew up in a less inclusive era where being gay was not a real option. I never married though and I suspect a few of my gender have - I came out last Feb and never felt so relieved - I can be me now. I hope too to have a boyfriend - you realise it is the only thing that fits. Bless you and every happiness in the future in finding a true love.
