Coming Home to Autism

Coming Home to Autism

3 жыл бұрын

We moved house from Brighton to Dorset in the middle of a pandemic! To say it was stressful is an understatement. In this week's video, I give you a rundown of our summer what we have been up to. An update on Dylan's new school, health and much more.
If you're new to my channel, welcome to the family and thank you for watching our video. Here's a little bit about me, I am a wife, a mother of three beautiful children, and a former actress. Following my eldest son (Dylan)'s diagnosis of ASD, I threw myself into knowing all there was to know about Autism and how to help him. After 6 years of research, I wrote my first book 'Coming Home to Autism', with my friend and speech therapist, Rhian Grounds. My mission is to help support and inspire parents of special needs children!
Please feel free to write in our comment section if you'd like to share your story or if have any questions regarding Autism.

Thank you for always said that is light at the end of the tunnel, I felt lost this week when the doctor diagnosed my son 3 y/o in the spectrum, I kind of knew but it was very hard to heard the words autism even though he said is mild, my head started spinning all over and I was very down this week, and then I found your channel and I realized that my son is still my son, that I love him with all my heart, we will do anything to help him. I hope that Dylan and your family keep getting better, seeing your videos give me hope that my son can talk one day, and he can be independent. Thank you for being so positive and show us how difficult and beautiful autism can be. Thank you so much

Hey there I’m sending you a big hug I know it’s so over whelming when you first hear those words but all will be ok. I have been On a roller coaster ride over dylans 10 years more ups than downs . But some downs which were hard especially when Dylan was sick I didn’t know how I was going to come back from that but we did. I focused on Day to day stuff not too far ahead you know. Hope this helps x

Hello, So good to have you back, and so sorry to hear that you have been plagued with problems and that things have not been going according to plan. These things are sent to try us and they have. Be assured that when you overcome these problems with the Lord's help, all of you will become much stronger and better for it. Sorry to hear that Dylan has not been well , but is recovering well and that both Luca and Naia are coping admirably. May the good Lord continue to bless you and family.

Hello, it is great to hear from you again. It must have been tough for you and your family but you did well especially with convincing Dylan for eating. I noticed as well that some doctors, nurses, dietetician are unaware what actually autism is and they look at you like we were from different planet.... Sad, really. Take care and good luck with new school and new house. Greetings from Devon, xxx

@@ComingHometoAutism You have such calming power and a wonderful way of describing stories. During lockdown I discovered that my now 20mo boy has autism and have just been told that it's a 2 year wait for an assessment 🙈 Looking at Dylan's development and various issues you touch on is like a little window to what our future may look like. It's so informative ♡ Ps. Your daughter is the CUTEST!

I feel for Dylan. I really didnt cope with having to move house either. I have been here for 2 1/2 years now and am just starting to settle down. I felt emotionally unsafe for a long time. I struggled with people touching all my stuff in order to move me. I felt like i had no control over my life or choices even though technically i did. I didnt want to move even though i knew i had to. It just felt really awful. I still do have alot of issues and with Covid my support programs that were just starting to help me are now all shut. I am eligable for some in home help once the quarentine lifts a bit and allows that but i dont cope well with people coming into my house. Even people i know feel like invaders

Damn, maybe it's just because I'm on my period but I actually teared up. It must be very challenging for you and your family. Covid has been a b*** to especially special needs people while life keeps dealing the usual punches. It must take a huge toll on all of you. But you're right. The only thing we can really do and owe to ourselves is to find the positive things and keep searching for that light at the end of the tunnel.

I notice dillan has a pet dog , I have a son that's 8 years old with autism and I was wondering if it's a good idea to get him a pet dog ? I rather get some type of answer from parents that go through the same things we autism parents go through on a daily basis. I would really appreciate the any advice

My oldest grandson (7) has anxiety and adhd and here in Ontario Canada there is a theropy kitten program. Its free and they fix them and you must take 2 and spend time holding them. When he get anxious he holds the kitten and he calms right down. It was amazing. It works also for his 2 1/2 yr old brother who is on the spectrum.

Hey there yes Dylan has a dog she is a cat a poo called Rosie. I definitely think getting a dog has calmed Dylan but it is down to your own family situation. The dog is a lot of hard work and is like another child especially as a puppy so if you have lots of hands on deck they can take them for walks and in the beginning when they are a puppy they can’t hear the lot so you need to let your child be aware of that. But our personal experience Rosie has been a blessing for Dylan. X
