On November 4, 2019 at 0901 hours, Newark Fire Department was dispatched to 987 Idlewilde Avenue for a report of a structure fire. While responding, the dispatcher reported a person possibly being trapped inside the structure per the caller information. Medic-1 was on the air in the vicinity and quickly arrived on scene reporting a working fire. The crew from Medic-1 donned their turnout gear and using a water-can attempted to make entry into the structure as civilians had indicated that they thought they could hear someone inside.
NFD responded with 2 engines, 2 ladders, 2 medics, and 3 chief officers for total strength of 19, and received assistance from 2 mutual-aid engines. While the fire was being knocked down a search of the structure revealed no civilians were inside. Shortly after that the occupant arrived on scene and confirmed nobody is inside.
The cause of the fire was ruled undetermined.
This video was recorded with a Motorola Z Force Droid cellphone.

Wow. 4:32 first door on Truck 3 opens. 4:46 line deployed. 5:08 line charged, 5:19 wet stuff on the hot stuff. 47 seconds to put water on the fire. Less than 30 seconds later the second line was charged and ready. Now that is impressive.

We are lucky to have a pair of hose reels on our rural / urban tanker here in Tasmania ( ‘full service’ bush fire, domestic, MVA and light industrial area, specialising in concrete prefab, ship building and aquatic services, general grab-bag of needs). The front reel, on the bumper bar, is ~60m ( 180’) of 25mm (1’), and the rear reel is 120m ( 360’) of 32mm (1.5’) and is a heavy bi¥€£ to roll up. Both are set up that you only need unroll what’s necessary, and make hitting hard and fast easier. We often use the bumper reel while rolling, blackening out the edges of a grass fire. Very handy.

@John Kugelfischer - have you ever heard of a "preconnect"? Most, if not all, departments pull the entire lay, and don't worry about trying to flake out individual sections, break down a coupling, and then reconnect. Why waste all that time? The extra hose lying around isn't hurting anything. And they had water flowing in less than a minute from the time Ladder 3 arrived, and had a pretty good knockdown in about 3-4 minutes. I'd like to see any department, anywhere, do significantly better than that.

The difference I see in your vids compared to so many others is the troops have complete and utter trust in your call and they respect you. That then shows in how they operate. They know your call is always on point and you're looking out for them and they can just get on and do their job. It makes such a difference. Watching other crews they are floundering and second guessing each other. Full kudos to you Chief, you're one in a million and many other teams could learn from you.

@@30pvfd Have to agree Chief, I did notice a lot of white helmets on some of the video's I view. As a VFF it makes it hard when on a scene you follow the command of when then you have another one come out of no where and hey bring your line over here and hit this spot. Chief Decker makes it easy by assigning chiefs to sectors and they have total control of that zone, which means no over riding the command of another chief. The job gets done in a more proficient manner as well as professional and more property a saved from damage.

David Decker During my final years before retirement my Battalion consisted of 5 Engine Companies and 2 Truck Companies. As an IC it makes things move so much smoother when you have great personnel on the scene. Did things always go perfect? Of course not however the personnel I worked with knew how to correct the situation and not panic. Your personnel remind me of my crew in Battalion 2. Very motivated, making interior attacks and not being foolish. True professional firefighters.

Tim Walker That was Medic Unit, and I’m pretty sure they didn’t have a charged line at that time. They were dispatched to a Possible Entrapment and were the only guys on scene. The Fire appears to have only been on the front side, and as you can see there is another door further to the left other than the one they’d forced. They go in as a Primary team, and make their way through to the back. While they are inside, notice the second team forced the door further to the left while others worked on getting water to the fire. “Risk a lot to save a lot”

Man, these guys owned that fire in *just over a minute* from the first line's charging to fire under control. That's a heck of a job all by itself, but S&R was going on at the same time in the structure. They put on an absolute clinic on how to handle a structure fire with possible trapped people. RH H it’s that way pretty much everywhere! Still doesn’t mean people will do the correct thing and pull over. Arizona has a move over law for emergency vehicles, tow trucks, disabled motorists, cops and such! Common sense things basically. Still had a few hundred vehicles slide by my disabled truck with just inches to spare despite having a open and clear lane to slide over on! Then once my rescue arrived and we had my truck loaded on the trailer a semi damn near took everything out when the driver decided he wanted to occupy the same space we were. I was stuck for like 3-4 hours and during that entire span the only time anyone even gave half a lane is when a sheriff’s deputy stopped to see if I needed help! Biggest problem I see is not enough enforcement of the move over laws and the stupid motorist laws. Still waiting for state of AZ to charge the idiot who drove into a flooded creek and killed 3 kids.

@ffjsb 4 жыл бұрын
I don't think closing the door really mattered at all in THIS fire, although it's a good habit. The fire looked to be on the leeward side, and all the windows on the front are already gone, so I don't believe anything would've changed the flow path, in fact opening up the rear might have pulled in more fresh air to the back had there been a victim there.

Go get the writers/directors/producers of 9-1-1 for having a FF help apprehend a subject that had fled on a motorcycle and he used a stream from the deck gun to do so. That was pretty comical. Or sawing into a random spot where a baby is supposedly stuck in a plumbing pipe. Running into a fully engulfed structure alone fully upright with no handline just a haligan.

Karen Page actually, this ladder is a quint, which is a combination engine ladder. The ladder seen here is actually a can hook up to a hydrant with the same pump that the pumpers have. They even carry a supply line, and several attack lines. And those pierce trucks have the option of the “Texas Chute Out” Hose system, which if I’m not mistaken they can carry 1000’ of 5 inch, and 500’ of 3 inch hoses, on a ladder truck. Which is really good for rural areas, where there may not be time to wait for an engine if the ladder is the first due truck.

@@Sonic-sh2vh Much respect to you sir, especially for being part of the leadership and helping keep the rank and file safe while putting your time in. I'm glad you made it to retirement and are now enjoying what you worked so hard for. And I agree with you, I am looking forward to being home at nights and not needing to get up to an alarm clock. Take care and enjoy it.

The thing is, with consistent and regular training, it's not that hard to do that. At the volunteer department I used to run with, we made it a point that we should be able to have a preconnect pulled, flaked out, and water flowing, within 45 seconds of the parking brake being set. We didn't *always* hit that mark, but most of the time we could.

Great call on the VES to the rear exit way. As usual Newark are setting the "bar" for other agencies to meet. The chauffeur had the line charged within a minute of it being stretched. One of my old chiefs demanded that the line be charged and water flowing within one minute....lol. If it wasn't, he was on our asses wanting to know why not! Thanks for the great work!

I used to push our department hard. We are rural area and have to haul water. We had a 2100 gallon tanker that was powerful and had a onboard 500 GPM pump. It was usually the first to put water on the fire. The tanker crew would have most of the fires extinguished before the pumper got set up. I left in 2001. My hearing is too bad now.
