I don’t ever comment on videos, like, ever, but I wanted to share my Covid-era graduation story. This is a really long story, so I’m so sorry ahead of time! First, a little context: I come from a family that was very much not a “college family.” My dad never graduated high school, and my mom dropped out of community college to be a mom full time. My brother went to a university and graduated and became the only member of our family to get a college degree. It was sort of a running joke between my sister and I that our parents put him through it and then just went “okay, one graduate’s enough.” But it never really seemed like I would go to college, anyway. I had to drop out of high school to help take care of my mom when she got sick, so I didn’t get a high school grad ceremony. I later got my GED, but you don’t exactly get a ceremony for that. Later on, I started a band and toured the country for about a few years before I finally decided I wanted to go to college and do something more with my life. So I went to community college from 2014-2018 and built up credits part time. But in 2018, I wanted to finally commit to the bit, so to speak, so I applied to CSUN… got accepted… and got put on a two-year plan to get my Bachelors in Journalism. Because I was a transfer, I didn’t get to participate in the community college graduation ceremony. My final semester began at the start of 2020. I don’t really need to explain that once again, I didn’t get to walk due to my very fun timing. But there’s a silver lining to all of this. Because you see, around the time I decided to start college, I started dating a very lovely woman who was very aware of how symbolically, I just wanted to walk at one of these ceremonies. So one day, a few months after I didn’t get a ceremony, she starts acting really weird. She’s normally a very talkative person, but she’s incredibly quiet, despondent, and honestly very snappy. I kept asking her what was wrong and she wouldn’t say anything. Eventually, she tells me she needs to head to her job at the pizzeria to pick up something. I’m like “wtf do you need from the pizzeria” and she starts crying. And I’m like okay holy shit I’m sorry, we can go. At this point, I’m feeling very weird. What is going on and why is my girlfriend crying out of nowhere? Why won’t she tell me what’s wrong? And we pull up to the pizzeria, and we park. finally, she taps me on the shoulder, looks at me, and says “I’m really sorry I’ve been acting weird. I am very very bad at lying. And I’ve been keeping a secret from you for a few days now.” And I’m like “oh. I see. What’s the secret?” So she gets out of the car, motions for me to follow, opens the door to the pizzeria… She’s set up an entire graduation ceremony just for me. Balloons, a congratulations banner, typical graduation music on the jukebox, a few of my friends masked up and hanging at a distance, and she even got my brother, his wife, and my sister on Zoom set up on a tablet at the front. She walks back up to me with a bag - that has a graduation gown in it. So I know this was a VERY long comment, but tldr: my Covid-era graduation ceremony was thrown for me by my now-fiancée in one of the kindest gestures anybody has ever done for me.

In my school we had a giant zoom call for the whole class, where we like went through the graduation procedure but in a 2 hour call, we got 11 seconds to show our diploma when they called our name, and that was it that was my graduation mid 2020

Graduation speeches are always so epic in movies but in reality is just a kid saying random things 😂

“You can fail at what you don’t want. So you might as well take a chance at doing what you love.” This hit so hard for me; it’s exactly my life rn. I had a job I didn’t like at a company that treated its employees like shit, and I ended up getting fired. As much as it sucked, it also forced me to pursue what I actually want to do - design. And on the note of being a designer, that Conan quote is perfect. That’s exactly how design works. Nothing is designed in a vacuum, it’s like you said, how people are as individuals, everything they make, and everything they do is learned and influenced by their experience. This is why things like sci-fi monsters always resemble at 1 animal that exists, why people say “this is just another Minecraft knockoff,” or why they’ll accuse content creators of copying each other. I’m glad you highlighted it and I hope people keep this as a take away - “copying” is how it works. We’re just iterations of what came before and that’s awesome. Don’t look at what people are doing the same, celebrate the new things that different people bring to the table.

Also as the youngest child of four, I have so many memories of being on the opposite end of what you described. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2020 and the spring ceremony got pushed to the end of the summer. By summer it had to be held online and a slideshow was shown. In my 2020 graduation, we did it in small groups in the gym. They had like 6 different graduations and had the student speeches recorded. The attendance rate was also really low because of COVID, so there weren’t a lot of people in the gym at one time. It also was significantly shorter with that many less people so the exposure time was shorter. Still not ideal, but it’s a huge step up from doing the whole school in one room.

I graduated from Indiana University in May 2020. They decided to not hold any sort of virtual/hybrid graduation and promised us that we would have an in-person graduation eventually. Well basically what happened is that, they just invited us to come and participate in the May 2021 commencement which hardly any of my class did. I would’ve preferred us to just make the most of what we could’ve and just done something online or hybrid. My brother just graduated from there last Saturday and I don’t think I had fully processed never having a graduation and realized that sitting at his and seeing all of what I missed out on. (Class of 2020 got robbed but I am grateful that we only had to experience 6 weeks of online school rather than the grades under us. I would’ve flunked out in online school)

When I was 14 and my brother was 10, he came up to me because he wanted to show me something cool on the computer. I was playing games and losing and was mad, so I yelled "shut up, leave me alone, I don't care". He walked away quietly and my mom said "he was really excited, go look at what he wants to show you". I immediately realized what I did and went and looked, but he was already upset and defeated, he didn't really want to show me anymore. I'm 29 now and have cried over this moment many times in my life and ever since anytime anyone is excited to show me something I look and act excited. Even now if he as a 26 year old texts me I always say "that's so cool". My niece and nephew, I also always go look. I saw my nephew make the same mistake I did with his sister. It crushed me because it reminded me of what I did and I was seeing it happen right in front of me again. He apologized to her and they probably won't remember it, it was just her not falling off a skateboard while rolling 5 ft. But I'll always remember it. Moral of the story, if someone is excited to show you something, you should be honored. Of all the people they could share it with, they chose you, remember that and act like the person they think you are.

2020 graduate here, our planned graduation ceremony got delayed multiple times for obvious reasons until we all moved on to uni and we stopped hearing from the school. that was until late 2022 when we received a surprise email inviting us to a graduation/reunion event at the school. i took the opportunity to volunteer to give a speech as i felt it'd be a fun thing to do, and i ended up delivering a light-hearted one about the importance of the memories/connections made in school, since after all that was the reason why we had all come back two and a half years later. was a very enjoyable experience overall, definitely resonated with a lot of the things brought up in this video

Great video! I graduated university in 2020 - my school had a ceremony with all the other classes that had to postpone commencements in May of 2021. My class graduated last in the day, so we were at commencement at 11 pm at night! I actually enjoyed the experience as it was nice to travel back to my college town and visit with friends while also having a bit of money since I had been working full time for a year!! It felt good to be able to afford nice-ish clothes for my commencement with my own money!

class of 2020 here! my school just ended up walking across an empty stage grabbing my diploma and then leaving, we had some teachers distanced outside cheering but I was (and mostly still am) heartbroken I didn't get the full experience, and trust me, the apology to all of us did mean a lot to me. also I will never not be angry about missing prom im so pissed ill never get over it

I graduated in 2021 and my graduation was basically like a "drive thru" ceremony. The principal would stand at a podium on stage in the gym and call names one by one and people would basically line up in a queue and go up as they're called, grab their diploma, take a picture and walk off. In terms of time, I think I was at the school for 30 minutes and most of that was spent like finding out where to go and who I was behind

I'm the youngest. A lot of my best memories are when my older siblings took time with me. Painting nails with my sister. Falling off the bleachers and having my older brother who's basketball game we were watching come and carry me to the car. My brother had to study for some big test but also babysit me. I asked to play a board game. He took a break to play with me and then went back to studying. Taking the time to dessing up as warriors and take 'epic' photos. I hurt my foot one day so to get me to stop crying my brothers turned on MTV and we all laughed at the Weird Al music videos. climbing trees together and trying to make the most convincing bird calls. Palying videogames all night be cause we didn't get invited to any New Years Eve partys but our parents did. All good times. I appreciate my siblings taking time to spend with me.

aw you talking about regretting what you said to your little brother made me wanna cry. i think we all have moments like that. in the grand scheme of things it might be small, and they might not even remember, but you just can't get over the guilt. there are quite a few instances like that, where i was a grump, hurt someone's feelings, and ruined the mood that i still cringe over and kick myself for. those "i can't sleep, i'm going to agonize over this shitty thing i did 15 years ago" moments happen often lol. i'm definitely more mindful of how my actions and words affect other people now too. you right, it doesn't feel good to live with that regret.

There was such a close GPA amongst our classes top ten that we didn't do the valedictorian and salutatorian. The top ten picked someone we felt had been the most influential. My class loved school and we were the first class to graduate where students with the B+ average were in the bottom half. College was even better. I still cry when I hear Pomp and Circumstance.

Failure>regret is a huge reason why I’ve decided to take a chance and move halfway across the country. If I end up failing there I’ve got the memories of living and trying there, but if I never do it that’s more regret than anything

i started my university career in 2019. We had a full year in person, 2020 was spent almost completely online and 2021 our final year, was mixed again. I feel like i truly got robbed of my university experience. My graduation ceremony obviously got postponed but by the time graduation came around, i had moved states so could no longer attend. Was just a bit of an average time to be honest. This video was a really nice thing to watch and i appreciate you immensely Scott. It's just been hit after hit for you recently. That story you told about your brother was very wholesome❤ I definitely have things I would go back and do/say differently if I could. One of the things I regret the most is getting into fights with my dad before his unexpected passing. When I graduated high school in 2020, we had appointments to go to the school and get recorded walking across the stage for a video graduation. Luckily I did also get a real graduation where we were sent graduation masks and the chairs were 10ft apart from each other. It was pretty wild, but I’m glad I got a real one

love love love this video! thanks for the tears. I graduated undergrad in 2020 and this weekend from grad school that was 100% online. In 2020, we had a stream of a powerpoint presentation where they read our names off, but in 2021 they finally let us walk. We had a large football program, so they set up chairs 6 ft apart from one another across the whole field. They'd let us go up row-by-row and we'd have to walk all the way up to one of the sides of the field, then they'd call our name and we'd walk all the way back to our chair. For my online school this weekend, they're inviting the online students to go to their campus for a whole ceremony. I'm not going, but it's funny how different it is in 2023, where a university is actually encouraging students from across the globe to come visit for an large in-person gathering.

I’m graduating high school next month and I’m quite nervous, but watching those speeches and their inspirational quotes has calmed my nerves a bit.

As someone halfway through a degree that I absolutely love but am not sure what I am going to do with it, I needed this.

I was a speaker at the certificate ceremony for the arts high school I went to. I remember thinking I wrote a decent speech, but I didn't realize it would leave many of my friends in tears at the end. Even the assistant principal told me it was one of the best speeches that had been submitted. It was a very surreal experience that I'm thankful to have, thank you so much for reminding me of that moment!!

My college graduation was so un-special. I dropped one of my double majors in my junior year (went from Special Education and English to just English) and discovered that I was only 9 credits away from degree completion. By the end of the summer of 2020, I could theoretically be finished with my degree. This threw me entirely, I was graduating a year early and had to think about all these big picture things that I hadn't considered. I really wasn't ready for it, but I was so miserable in school by that point that I just opted to finish early. This was 2020, early days of the pandemic. Suddenly everything around me was changing. I wasn't going to return to a familiar environment in the fall, all the friendships that I cultivated over 3 years were falling apart, and I had no major career plans lined up. For the actual graduation itself, I could only invite two guests. The graduating class was spilt into three ceremonies so that the amount of people could be controlled. We had it outside in September of 2020 instead of May. Definitely didn't feel special. And all of the graduation activities that would normally be held (senior breakfast, graduation carnival, blah blah) never happened because nothing could be held in person at the time. Not a joyous occasion at all, but I was glad not to have to complete another year of overwhelming schedules and finally be freed from the intensity of the college environment. Looking back, there were so many things that I wished I had done differently. I wished that I had taken more risks, actually went for the major I wanted, went to school out of state, focused less on graduating on time, gotten involved in extra curriculars, and transferred when I wanted to. I listened to so many well-meaning people who I didn't realize at the time weren't listening to me at all. Taught me a lot.

This video is so perfectly timed for me because today was my last day of high school. Ever. We graduate in a week, but besides that, I’m never going back to take a class, eat lunch, or hangout with friends. I’ve spent so much time just wanting to get out of there but now that I’m finally free, I just don’t know anymore. I wish I could stay here and be a kid forever but now I have to grow up and go to college. This video did provide some pretty good advice, so thank you for that Scott. You may not be the person I aspire to be exactly like, but you are an inspiration to me, and what I’d assume is many others. Good luck to any other graduates of 2023 out there!
