This video shows an extensive commercial application of our snow melt system for an asphalt road and driveway remodel.

Day 1, the first step of any snow melt project is to remove the original surface material, in this case, the asphalt. After removal, the base surface is graded. Along with preparing the area that will be heated, it's essential to plan the path for electricity to get to the system. In this case, a trench is dug next to the road, allowing room for the conduit to house the wires.
Day 2, Scott shows how the asphalt layers and snow melt mats are installed. A base layer of asphalt is applied to the graded area. After it's tamped down, a binder coat is applied. Next, the snow melt mats are installed according to the installation SmartPlan provided. A highboy is used to drop the asphalt on top of the mats, and workers carefully shovel it by hand over the mats before the roller compacts the layers.
Day 3, we focused on the electrical housing for the system. Each Cable is tested with a MegaOhm Meter. Junction boxes, which will house the cold leads for each snow melt mat, are assembled. Connections are made in the junction box to create a singular point for the power source to run to. The sensors for this project include the overtemperature sensor for pavement and an aerial sensor. Working together, they will help detect the temperature and precipitation to activate the system when it snows - automating the radiant heating when needed.
Day 4, The final layer of asphalt is installed to meet the original height of the roadway. After it's finished, our team replaces the sensor housing cap with the sensor itself. A fishing tape is used to hook the sensor wire here and pull it back through the conduit. The sensor height can be adjusted with the housing screws. Grease as well as duct seal is used to fill in any gaps and make the housing water resistant.
Day 5, the power supply from the main control area is routed to the junction box area. High- and low-voltage connections are made at these boxes to run it back to the power supply. Breaker boxes are GFEP-rated (Ground Fault Equipment Protection), a special circuit breaker for outdoor jobs like this one. At the control panel, low-voltage wires connect to the panel's top portion, while high-voltage connections are made in the lower section. The control panel communicates with the wall of relay panels with a 120V signal to turn the mats on or off.
