I was deferred for adhd and asthma (childhood). I won an appeal that took 4 years to complete. I passed prac in early January and I have basic training in March. In my appeal I had to show a lot of evidence that I could function like any other person. If your going through an appeal just keep at it.

Good post, as the OC of a Recruiting Team (and a medical professional) the bottom line up front is because so many 'medical' issues are on a scale of severity they require investigation if a candidate is recognised as having the relevant signs and symptoms. Unfortunately in the past (eg prior to this process) some candidates have progressed to basic training only for them to be compromised or put at risk during their employment due to a previously un recognised medical issues. I completely understand the frustration of candidates and the delays caused by the review process but identified there are safety reasons for this.

This is really helpful advice. I spent the best part of about 3 years in the medical appeals process fighting my case, getting deferred and declared permanently unfit, but I start basic in a couple of weeks. Anyone who is stuck in the appeals process; do not give in, if you really want it then find a way to make it happen. See a lot of lads who are perfectly fit and would make fantastic soldiers get screwed over by Capita, when in reality if they appealed they would get in. The Army seem to be playing fast and loose with JSP 950 regarding Asthma as I had symptoms less than four years ago (at the time of my medical) and it was not even mentioned, ironically.

I’m thankful the army do ECG now I didn’t know I had a heart problem and had to wait until it’s fixed… now awaiting a heart operation but haven’t given up yet. passed the fitness with flying colours aswell…. It’s a Long process but it’s worth it 💪🏻

Good to know but I’m surprised you didn’t cover high blood pressure or heart murmurs. I was deemed unfit when I applied back in 1996 as in them days it was a permanent bar but when I applied 5 years ago for the reserves it popped up again and turned out to be a hole which after two years I got repaired and have been in for 3 years. It was a long road of letters and fighting but I’d always say if it’s your dream fight anything. Loads of lads get deferred for murmur but 9/10 it’s innocent and good to go, and having echo grams at selection helps speed things up. 👍

I had an scoliosis and a couple old injuries when I was younger got a doctors note before ac and there was no bother at all, off to Catterick in March, get any worries looked at prior you'll be grand ✌

Thank you for the video! I failed the medical questionnaire for Aspergers. I was diagnosed when I was 7 years old. Im saving up to be reassessed as I dont believe that the diagnosis was accurate, or at least, what they noted of me isnt applicable today.

Many of these conditions are disqualifying for enlistment in the US military. Asthma is really, really tough to get a waiver for. Almost impossible in the Marines. Many back and joint injuries are a no-go also. I think sickle cell is also a DQ condition. Of course there are many other issues out there. I know my #2 daughter had a problem not on your list that was a DQ condition. I was disgustingly healthy when I enlisted in the Marine Corps, but that went to hell in a hand basket by the end of my six-years active duty. I was able to enlist in the Air National Guard but now, 21-years and two wars later, I'm 100% service connected disabled. My knees and back are wrecks. My hearing is shot. My #1 daughter was good when she enlisted, but now after 17-years and a trip to Afghanistan later she couldn't enlist on entry level even if she bribed the doctor.

Could you maybe make a video explaining food allergies in the military, and how that works. If you get immunotherapy successfully, can you appeal a case?

All I can do is apply but I'm worried asthma will probably go against me being able to join. Only time it effects me is if I get a chest infection but the army will probably see it differently.

ok this is super helpful, i had terrible asthma when i was 11 and before but have been completely fine for 7 years now. i'm still undergoing orthodontic treatment but that should hopefully be finished by the time im 20 (18 now) what about deviated septum? i think i have it and do tend to not breath through my noise/struggle then most people is that an issue? and last but not least i have slight hearing loss/dampning in my left ear and sometimes get tinnitus but its something i can coupe with but was worried about the hearing side . For example if i lay on my good ear i cant really hear clearly from the tv or my phone but when i switch its completely fine, or if people are talking/whispering its fine

I have titanium plates over my right collar bone from a bike crash a few years ago, the plates are still in but my body has fully healed. Went to the assessment centre with both ears fully blocked which caused 8 months of chasing around my gp to only in the end going private because they can't do their job right the first time. Finally on my way to Pirbright but if I get medically discharged it's probably gonna be because of my hearing as its horrendous for my age.

All fixed and I've been back playing football and running since . like i said this was 6years ago. I applied to join the army reserves but i failed my medical questionnaire based on the ACL rupture. my level 1A and 1B appeal was rejected. Thinking of going for the level 2 appeal. Do you think its worth it as I fear that I am chasing a dead battle but do not want to give up. I am now 31. started applying at 29. Any thoughts would be appreciated. However I have a question, I was told I have migraines almost 2 years ago and required medication that I had to take if I felt a migraine coming on however, I haven’t taken the medication in months. Additionally, I was diagnosed with depression 3/4 years ago but stopped medication in October 2022. Would both of these things disqualify me from joining the army?

Hi matey, going in for the army brief next week having completed the first part of my application (inc. med survey). I had a couple GP appointments and physio sessions regarding my knee 18-36 months ago. I did so as there was a slight pain and discomfort so just wanted to make sure there wasn’t a serious issue and there wasn’t. Having lost weight doing a very strenuous physical job, and done a lot of leg work in the gym I am now absolutely fine, no pain no impairment. Just wondering how worried you think I should be. Hi mate, was rejected from the Army for autism, it's very mild, I have a bachelors degree and box which shows I'm functional and I don't take medication for it, I also had an AC joint dislocation which was misdiagnosed and needed surgery after an appeal and had a depressive episode of about 6 months as a result of the misdiagnosis and subsequently finding out about the misdiagnosis, I've had a look at the eligibility requirement for medical and from this I'll need to appeal the autism, but should I also include the context of the depressive episode and the AC joint replacement as well? I sorted the GP letters for all of these conditions but was wondering if since the other 2 weren't part of my initial medical rejection whether or not I should include them, any help would be appreciated.

I'm wanting to join the RAF as a mechanical techie in a couple years, I've been working on my fitness lately and have been using your guide for press ups very well, been working wonders so thanks for that. However, as I've been pushing the reps up and gaining strength I've struggled with knowing when and how to breathe. I can go through 15 or so without a break, but been finding it an issue as I just naturally hold my breath and when I try breathing it all goes horribly wrong. You got any advice for this? Cheers.

I have a mild red green colourblindness (it's called Deautan the one which I have and it effects the green colour cone) I can tell apart red and green easily and I have no issues with lime and yellow either until it gets to a really light lime but I rarely have issues with limes and yellows at all. Hi, I got rejected from the army due to a 'clear history of lower back pain with scatia pain.' From my memory I only had one well documented injury which was last year when I was lifting weights. I was lifting weights and felt a pull and had pain for 3-4 weeks. I had an MRI scan and all tests, they all came back clear. The pain cleared up and I have been fine since. I am a boxer and athlete, I train 6 days week, and have had no pain to the point that I had completely forgotten about it until the army brought it up. From a non-medical standpoint, what are my chances with the appeal? Also, can I email hyperlinks to video and pictures showing my physical capability, since I am an extremely fit person

I was permanently rejected after I had appealed about eczema. I had already communicated that I don't have eczema and that I had dry skin caused by my day job to which they made changes and no lo ger have the problem. However because the GP had put eczema on my record and they changed it the medical team are still saying I'm a risk. But I didn't require any thing like secondary care or time off work so I don't know how I am a risk.

So I have low von Willebrand factor but I know how strict the Army can be with blood issues. In my case I have never suffered with bleeds or had to take any medication. Doctors described it as an "aspirin like defect". I've looked at the JSP 950 and it doesn't look good for me. I'm just wondering if they make exceptions since it doesn't affect me at all. I've even got a letter from experts saying I'll be fine so is it even worth mentioning?

Hey i noticed you reply to all comments, which is incredibly difficult, so thank you for that. My question is a bit complicated. WHen i was younger (dont recall exact age, but say 5-8 maybe, give or take a year or two.) i was told i had asthma, and was put on with inhalers. I outgrew it by age 10 (give or take 2 years.) and i personally havent used a single inhaler since then, but my mom kept getting more inhalers via my name, as they were free, so she could get them for herself without paying. That stopped at age 18, i then immigrated to the UK (family descent.) I havent been prescribed an inhaler for 4 years here, but i am worried that due to my mom using them throughout my childhood in canada, i will be deferred. (I have not yet applied.) Do you reckon ill be fine? ( i also show no symptoms of asthma, etc at all right now, stil worried though.)

I think high standards can be confused with impractical judgment… if you have asthma which is very much controlled, you have never been to a hospital for it, never had an asthma attack, can run as far as someone without asthma, then to me you should be able to join the army… if you take medication for high blood pressure as a preventative measure instructed by your doctor, with no symptoms etc, I don’t see why you shouldn’t be able to join the army… if you have a head ache, (I wouldn’t even tell them that) but if you get the odd headache and you can still do what you need to do, then you should be able to join. We are all human, we are all susceptible to something… to disregard genuinely keen people with good health to me is strange in the 21st century. If every soldier had to yomp 50 miles a day all the time then I get you need the best of the best, but reality is that is not true anymore…

The inhaler didn't help and I have not had to get checked for any asthma or other issues. Will this get flagged when I do my medical? I’d split with my Ex and went through the typical breakup process - (feeling down, losing sleep, anti-social) and decided to get some professional help… I was never diagnosed nor did I take any medication given to me (which I will leave a note of on my medical history), it feels like a stain on my medical history which is gonna cause me huge problems when it comes to the Recruitment process, just wondering what your take on this might be? I have had a asthma inhaler on repeat prescription since I was a young boy but haven’t needed to use it for the past 8 years. I haven’t had a asthma review for 3 years. I don’t suffer any breathing issues. I’m looking to become a reserve soldier. Will this be a problem for me? If so is there anything I can do before Assessment centre to mitigate this. I have been on medication for asthma since I was born I hadn’t had an asthma review in 4 years and my gps had been putting false information into their system I came off medication 1 year and a half ago now and I have been fine and my Gp have provided a letter saying I haven’t been on medication or had an asthma review in 4 years and I have my assessment a week today so hoping it won’t stop me but if I am deferred I’m not gonna give up fighting it

Hello I’ve been watching your videos on the army assessment centre. I have mine in 10 days. I’m really worried about the medical. I was successful in my medical appeal against records showing back pain when I was alot younger been clear for over 4 years and they passed me on the medical appeal. I’m just worried that when I go to the AC I’ll get rejected based on what my records say even though I don’t have any symptoms or any visual problems with my back. Is this common that you know of ? I was declared permanently unfit a few days ago because I get growing pains every now and again, had x rays and they came back perfectly normal but because I had scans over 2 years that’s the verdict. Gutted doesn’t come close

I was born with a condition called catch 22q11, its not genetic but every 10000 cases its genetic. My mum had. It and passed it down to my sisters and me. I don't actually suffer from it though. They do, the only issue I have is I get ill more quickly then anyone. My body is quite fit and healthy as I haven't been ill and keeping it ill. Would I have to do an appeal. For instance the flu, it takes an ordinary person with flu two weeks to heal it can take me one month to heal but my immune system 2 weeks to heal again.

So I applied for the army at the start of year, was on the final stage of medical but I had a message saying they refused me and I can make an appeal. So my ear drum bursted when I was 3 months old and was always prone to ear infection when in water and being a teen always swimming and not caring didn’t help but now I know how to prevent getting ear infections I’m good it’s been 4,5 years since I had one. Doctors even told me when I was younger I would have to wear hearing aids but I didn’t need them and told me listening to loud music wouldn’t help but again I’ve been to festivals etc and I’m fine so should I appeal or just let it go?

Hi sir. I did a blood test with the army and was found to have sickle cell trait. I was told that as a result, ill be doing graduated training, and not the usual vigorous training. So what will i do at the assessment centre? Will it still be 2 days? If i pass that, will they throw me into the 14 week basic training? For sickle cell trait people, wat happens after they pass the assessment center programme?

I have a close friend who was wanting to apply to the army but, this was 2 years ago and, hasnt needed medication for more than 8 months and has went away. What's the score with someone like that? I checked the JSP950 and it implies that they are Permanently Medically Unfit my mate has 90% of his medication he collected if that helps his case.
