There is information here which is not quite understood, or else is badly expressed. 1. The large Cathedrals were not built for for Pilgrimage. They were built to glorify God. They were FUNDED by pilgrimage, and to attract pilgrims the church needed relics. 2. Cathedrals are Cathedrals. They are not large churches. They have a very specific purpose, They are the church that contains the seat of a Bishop (his cattedra) and from which he governs the lesser churches in his area ( "Diocese"). 3. The other large type of church was an Abbey Church which was the church of a monastery or convent. 4. People were very interested in the Ancient Romans...... This implies that they were building in imitation of Ancient Rome. It isn't really the case. They were builing in the only way they knew how, which still, 700 years later, employed structural forms that had been used by the Romans. It needs to be remembered that the Romans had influenced architecture throughout their empire which had stretched right across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Roman buildings remained in use. When Romanessque architects built a church, they did it with semi-circular ches, because the semicircular arch had never disappeared. 5. It was only in those countries with the MOST Roman remains that there was a conscious imitation of Romanesque decoration in elements such as the capitals of columns. This occurs particularly in Italy. which never broke away from its Roman past. 6. "Sometimes these arches had a structural purpose but a lot of times they were decorative." This is a nonsensical way of stating the facts. It puts an emphasis that is completely wrong. Let me rephrase it in a way that gets rid of the two badly used expressions "Sometimes" and "a lot of times" The FACTS Semi-circular arches were used as a major structural form - form arcades, vaults and openings. Semi-circular arches were also used decoratively, for wall arcading and courses. NOTE the use of MAJOR and ALSO rather than "sometimes" and "a lot of times".
